Campgrounds and RV parks near Callender Lake, TX

Fishing drives most trips to this corner of East Texas. Nearby Lake Athens and Lake Palestine hold bass, crappie, and catfish, and Lake Athens Marina and RV Park provides boat launch access and dock space for guests bringing watercraft. Canton's First Monday Trade Days, held the Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month, is one of the largest open-air markets in the country and pulls RVers from across Texas. Tyler, about thirty minutes west, offers the Tyler State Park trail network, the Caldwell Zoo, and the Tyler Rose Garden. For kids, most private parks in the area include pools, stocked catch-and-release ponds, or playgrounds. Stay A While RV Park and Farm leans into a farm-stay format with animals on site.

East Texas has a long RV season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows, with daytime highs in the seventies and low eighties and lower humidity than midsummer. Wildflowers peak in April, and fall color in the hardwoods runs from late October into mid-November. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the mid-nineties and heat indexes higher. Shaded, full-hookup sites with reliable fifty-amp service are worth prioritizing between June and early September so air conditioning can run continuously. Thunderstorms are common in late spring and can be severe, occasionally including hail or tornado watches during April and May. Winters are mild but variable. Most private parks stay open year-round, though hard freezes several nights a year can affect water hookups. Book well ahead for any weekend that overlaps Canton's First Monday Trade Days, as area parks fill quickly on those dates regardless of season.

Expect small, owner-operated RV parks rather than large resort properties. Sites are generally level with full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and pull-through options for larger rigs. Cell service is usable on major carriers but can be spotty in wooded pockets; several parks advertise Wi-Fi with variable reliability. The surrounding area is rural. Groceries, fuel, and propane are available in Van, Ben Wheeler, Athens, and Tyler, but not always within walking distance of a campsite. Stock up before arrival on a Sunday, when small-town stores may close early. Wildlife is typical for East Texas: deer, armadillos, and a wide range of birds. Fire ants are present, so check pads before setting up chairs or slide-out mats. Mosquitoes are heavy from late spring through early fall, particularly near water.
