Campgrounds and RV parks near Dimmitt, TX

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the main draw. The second largest canyon in the country lies in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. The park has more than 30 miles of trails on horse, bike or foot, with views of wildlife, native plants and scenic cliffs. The Lighthouse hike to the park's signature rock formation is the most popular route. The TEXAS Outdoor Musical officially opens the first weekend in June and runs through mid-August each year, with shows happening Tuesdays through Sundays at the Pioneer Amphitheater inside the park. The Old West Stables, located inside the canyon, offers guided rides through Timber Creek Canyon. A snack bar and souvenirs are available. Reservations are required. Beyond the canyon, Amarillo adds museums, the Cadillac Ranch roadside art installation, and Route 66 stops. Clovis, New Mexico is a reasonable day trip to the west.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV camping in the Dimmitt area. Days are warm, nights are cool, and hiking in Palo Duro Canyon is far more comfortable than in midsummer. Wildflowers and mild temperatures make March through May and September through early November the sweet spot. Summer brings real heat and safety concerns inside the canyon. Temperatures in the canyon are often 5 to 10 degrees hotter than on the rim. The Lighthouse, Comanche, Givens Spicer Lowry, and Rock Garden trails close from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory. Afternoon thunderstorms are also a risk, and flash flooding is a serious danger. Winters are short but sharp. Cold snaps, wind, and occasional snow are normal, and many private RV parks stay open year-round while activity levels drop. Spring and fall provide more pleasant weather for outdoor activities, and winters are mild, although temperatures drop dramatically at night.

The landscape around Dimmitt is open, windy, and largely treeless until the ground drops into the canyon east of Canyon, Texas. Sunsets are long, stargazing is excellent, and cell signal varies at campgrounds inside the park, though signal returns at the entrance station. The road down into the canyon is steep with switchbacks, so make sure the rig can climb the grade back out. Electric sites are found in the Mesquite and Sagebrush areas, with the Sagebrush loop closest to the play Texas, and some sites will hold up to 60-foot RVs. Pack for wind and sun. Water for both people and dogs, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes are essentials. A burn ban has been in effect prohibiting ash-producing fires including wood or charcoal, though containerized fuel stoves with a shut-off valve are allowed for cooking, so check current fire status before arrival.
