Fairfield camping overview
Fairfield sits in Freestone County off Interstate 45, roughly halfway between Dallas and Houston. The town has long served as a highway stop and a fishing base, and RV travelers use it as a convenient overnight or short-stay location in East Central Texas.
RV options in the immediate area are mostly small, private parks rather than large resorts. Apollo Lodge & RV Park, Pull Through RV Park, and Hook & Ladder RV Park serve travelers looking for quick hookups off the interstate, while Shady Oaks Cabins and RV Park offers a more wooded setting closer to the lake area.
Fairfield Lake State Park, which for decades anchored outdoor recreation in the area and included the Springfield camping loop, was closed permanently by Texas Parks and Wildlife after the underlying land was sold to a private developer. RV travelers who once relied on the state park should plan around the private RV parks in and around town or look at other state parks farther out.
Things to do around Fairfield
Fishing has long been the headline activity in the area. Fairfield Lake itself was a well-known bass and catfish fishery, though public shoreline and boat-ramp access ended with the state park closure. Anglers commonly redirect to Richland-Chambers Reservoir and Lake Limestone, both within a reasonable drive.
In town, RV travelers can visit the Freestone County Historical Museum, browse the courthouse square, and use Fairfield as a launch point for day trips toward Corsicana or points east. Families staying at Shady Oaks Cabins and RV Park or Apollo Lodge & RV Park often combine a night in Fairfield with the drive between the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and Houston, breaking a long haul into two shorter days.

December - February
57° / 39°F 75 mmMild with brief cold snaps and occasional freezes
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of Texas. March through May brings mild temperatures and wildflowers, but it is also the wettest stretch, with May the peak rainfall month for the area. Thunderstorms and occasional severe weather are common, so travelers should watch forecasts and check tie-downs.
Summer is hot and humid, with daytime highs frequently in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and August the warmest month on average. Sites with shade and full hookups for running air conditioning become important. Afternoon storms are possible but monthly rainfall drops compared with spring.
Fall cools gradually through September, October, and November, with lower humidity and fewer storms, making it a popular window for weekend RV trips. Winters are generally mild with daytime highs typically in the upper 50s Fahrenheit, though brief cold snaps and occasional freezes can occur. Private RV parks in Fairfield generally operate year-round, but travelers should confirm winter hours directly with each park.
How to book campgrounds near Fairfield
The private RV parks around Fairfield, including Apollo Lodge & RV Park, Pull Through RV Park, Shady Oaks Cabins and RV Park, and Hook & Ladder RV Park, are booked directly with each property by phone or through their websites. These parks are smaller operations, and calling ahead is often the fastest way to confirm site length, hookups, and pull-through availability for larger rigs.
Book further ahead for spring weekends, holiday weekends, and any dates tied to Dallas or Houston events. Weeknights along the I-45 corridor are usually easier to secure. Fairfield Lake State Park, which formerly included the Springfield camping area, no longer accepts reservations through the Texas State Parks system, as the park has been permanently closed.
What to expect on the ground
Most RV parks in the Fairfield area are utility-focused: level sites, full or partial hookups, and easy interstate access, rather than resort amenities. Expect a mix of monthly residents and overnight travelers at properties like Apollo Lodge & RV Park and Pull Through RV Park. Cellular coverage along I-45 is generally reliable.
Roads into the smaller parks can be narrow, and some sites accommodate large rigs better than others. Travelers with 35-foot-plus motorhomes or fifth wheels should confirm site length and turning radius when booking. Grocery and fuel stops are available in Fairfield itself.
Wildlife in the surrounding countryside includes deer, armadillos, and a range of birds. Summer brings mosquitoes and ticks near wooded and lakeshore sites, so bug spray and standard tick checks are worth the habit, especially for kids and pets.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Fairfield, TX?
RV rental in Fairfield is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy a Central Texas getaway, with most peer-to-peer rentals on RVezy ranging from about $90 to $250 per night depending on size and season. Compact travel trailers and campervans sit at the lower end, while Class A motorhomes and family-sized Class C rigs land at the higher end. To find a cheap RV rental Fairfield travelers love, book mid-week stays, aim for shoulder months like March or October, and filter by Instant Book for the quickest confirmations. Good news: a regular Class C Texas driver's license (or your home state or country equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Fairfield, no commercial license or special endorsement required for the motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and the platform verifies your ID during booking so pickup is quick. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-45 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy that applies to every rental, with a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Yes, RV delivery in Fairfield is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig down I-45. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV at a local RV park or a private property within Freestone County. They'll level the rig, connect water, sewer, and 30/50-amp shore power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which Fairfield hosts offer it, then message them to confirm your specific drop-off spot.

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/fairfield-lakeWhen is the best time to take an RV trip in Fairfield, TX?
Spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through November) are the sweet spots for a Fairfield RV trip, with daytime highs in the comfortable 70s to low 80s and cool evenings ideal for a campfire. Summer in Freestone County is hot and humid, with July and August regularly hitting 95 to 100F, so you'll want a rig with strong air conditioning and shaded sites. Winter is mild (50s by day, 30s at night) and a great value season, with many parks running near empty Monday through Thursday. The Freestone County Fair in late spring fills local parks fast, so book that week 2 to 3 months ahead.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay picking one up in Fairfield?
Yes, and Fairfield is actually one of the easier places in Texas to learn the ropes: the town is small, traffic is light, and you've got wide, flat country roads to practice on before hitting I-45. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and waste tanks, and they're a quick text away during your trip. First time renting an RV? Start with a smaller Class C (around 24 to 28 feet) or a campervan rental Fairfield host offers, both are easier to maneuver than a 35-foot Class A. Do a short loop on quiet streets before merging onto I-45.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road in Texas?
Don't worry, you're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. From Fairfield, that often means a tow into Corsicana (about 24 miles north) or Mexia (about 30 miles west), both of which have RV-capable shops. You can reach roadside help directly from the RVezy app, and the RVezy support team is also available by phone or chat. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and exact mile-marker before pulling away from pickup, it shaves precious minutes off any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Fairfield, TX?
Fairfield's location dead-center between Dallas and Houston makes it a launchpad for one of the best RV road trips from Fairfield Texas has to offer. Head about 80 miles west to Waco for the Magnolia Silos and Cameron Park; drive roughly 95 miles northeast to Tyler State Park for piney woods and a clear spring-fed lake; cruise 160 miles south to Houston's Space Center; or aim 90 miles north to Dallas for Six Flags and the Arboretum. Want a bigger loop? Austin is about 175 miles southwest and the Hill Country wine trail around Fredericksburg is roughly 240 miles. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but Texas alone has enough variety to fill a two-week itinerary.
traveltexas.com/How much should I budget for fuel on my Fairfield RV trip?
Texas typically has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, so fueling up in Fairfield is a real win for your budget. Check current Texas averages on the EIA before your trip, as prices fluctuate. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs around 6 to 9 MPG, campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a half-ton truck pulling a travel trailer about 10 to 13 MPG. For a 500-mile loop in a Class C, plan a few hundred dollars in fuel at typical Texas pump prices. The Buc-ee's in Madisonville (about 45 miles south on I-45) and the Love's at Fairfield Exit 197 consistently post competitive fuel pricing near town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fairfield?
For most weekends, 2 to 4 weeks out is plenty for Fairfield's privately-run RV parks, which is one of the perks of choosing this slice of Central Texas over crowded coastal or hill country destinations. For peak windows like the Freestone County Fair, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, aim for 6 to 10 weeks ahead. Cedar Grove RV Park, Hook & Ladder, and Pull Through RV Park all take direct reservations by phone or through their websites, and several are also listed on Campspot and RoverPass. If a host on RVezy is delivering your rig, ask them which local park they recommend, they often have insider relationships and can suggest the best site.
campspot.com/What are driving conditions like around Fairfield, TX?
You're in luck, driving around Fairfield is genuinely RV-friendly. I-45 is a flat, wide interstate with generous shoulders, and US-84 gives you an easy alternative route. The terrain is gently rolling Post Oak Savannah with no mountain passes or steep grades. Watch for two specific things: sudden spring thunderstorms (March through May) that can drop visibility fast, and occasional deer on rural roads at dawn and dusk. Summer afternoons can also bring strong crosswinds on I-45 between Fairfield and Corsicana. Refuel before sundown and avoid driving the unlit county roads at night for the smoothest trip.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at Fairfield-area campgrounds?
Fairfield's RV parks deliver classic Texas hospitality with full hookups at most sites. Expect 30 and 50-amp shore power, fresh water spigots, sewer connections, and Wi-Fi at Cedar Grove, Hook & Ladder, and Pull Through RV Park. Cedar Grove also has a swimming pool, laundry, and a playground; Pull Through RV Park adds fishing ponds and walking trails. Dump stations are on-site at full-hookup parks, and potable water fills are typically free for registered guests. For boondocking gear refills, the Love's Travel Stop at I-45 Exit 197 is a convenient option. Bring a 25-foot sewer hose, some Fairfield sites have the connection on the far side of the pad.
fairfieldtx.com/What features and amenities come in a typical Fairfield RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped Fairfield rentals are. Most Class C and Class A motorhomes on RVezy come with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), wet or dry bathroom with shower, roof A/C, furnace, and a flat-screen TV. Many include a generator for boondocking, outdoor speakers, and a power awning. Campervans are more compact but still pack a bed, fridge, sink, and often a portable toilet. Seatbelt counts are listed on every RVezy listing, important for a family RV trip Fairfield travelers planning with kids in car seats. Wi-Fi hotspots are an increasingly common add-on, and major carriers have strong I-45 coverage through Freestone County.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfield%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Fairfield RV rental?
Plenty of great extras make life easier on a Fairfield RV trip. Popular host-offered add-ons include camping chairs and tables, full linen and kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, portable grills, and even paddleboards or kayaks for nearby Richland-Chambers Reservoir. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting point near I-45 Exit 197, and most hosts allow a flexible pickup window. Drop-off is the same location unless you've arranged delivery. Mileage policies and generator-hour limits are clearly displayed on every listing. Ask the host to add a fully-stocked kitchen kit, it eliminates a grocery run on day one of your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfield%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Fairfield RV rental?
It's straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy directly with a credit or debit card, no cash or e-transfers to the host, so your money is protected from booking to return. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not charged, and released after trip end assuming no damage or extra-mileage charges. To avoid any deposit hiccups, take time-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV's exterior, interior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off. Dump the tanks and fill the fuel tank before returning, those are the two most common reasons for unexpected deposit deductions.
