Campgrounds and RV parks near Groom, TX

In Groom itself, travelers stop for the Giant Cross, the leaning water tower, and Route 66 photo spots. Amarillo, 40 minutes west, adds Cadillac Ranch, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, about an hour southwest, is the region's headline outdoor destination, with hiking, mountain biking, horseback rides, and the outdoor musical Texas at the amphitheater in summer. Caprock Canyons State Park, home to the Texas state bison herd, is a longer day trip to the southeast. At Greenbelt Reservoir, largemouth bass are the most popular species, crappie are abundant, walleye fishing is best from April through June, and white bass are frequently caught in summer and fall. The lake also has a marina store with bait and tackle.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Panhandle. April through early June brings wildflowers and mild days, though it also brings the strongest storm activity: Groom sits within Tornado Alley, and severe thunderstorms with hail and high wind are common in late spring. Travelers should monitor forecasts and pick parks with a storm shelter or nearby sturdy structure. Summer is hot and dry. The area has a semi-arid climate with large day-to-night temperature swings, summer highs often reaching the upper 90s Fahrenheit, and roughly 20 inches of annual rainfall, most of it falling in the warmer months. Afternoon thunderstorms can build quickly. Fall is generally the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, and lower storm risk. Snow typically falls between November and March, with roughly 18 inches of snow annually across the Panhandle. Lake services at Greenbelt scale back in winter, so cold-weather visitors should plan around reduced marina hours and possible freezes.

Terrain around Groom is open, flat, and often windy. The Texas Panhandle is one of the windiest parts of the country, so awnings should be retracted when not in use and slide toppers checked before departure. Shade is scarce at both lake and roadside parks, and reflective windshield covers help in summer. The Creek RV Park and Country Sunset RV Park are small, quiet stops geared to overnighters on I-40. Triangle RV Park in Claude serves travelers heading to Palo Duro. Sites at these private parks typically include full hookups on 30 or 50 amp service. Greenbelt's Salt Fork Ramp and North Ramp are more primitive. Expect gravel or dirt surfaces, limited or no hookups, and basic restroom facilities. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, and sites can sit well back from the shoreline, though fishing, swimming at the sandy beach area, and boat ramp access remain available. Cell coverage is decent along I-40 but thins out at the lake.
