Campgrounds and RV parks near Happy, TX

Happy sits on the Texas Panhandle plains between Amarillo and Tulia, roughly 40 miles south of downtown Amarillo along I-27. The town is small and services are limited, so most RV travelers base themselves at nearby full-hookup parks or at the region's signature draw: Palo Duro Canyon State Park, about 30 miles north near Canyon, Texas. Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the United States and the anchor for outdoor recreation in the area. Camping inside the park spans five campgrounds with more than 130 sites, including water and electric loops such as Hackberry, Sagebrush, Mesquite, and Juniper, plus the tent-only Fortress Cliff area and CCC-era cabins. Just outside the canyon and along the I-27 corridor, private RV parks including Palo Duro RV Park, Panhandle Lodging RV Park, and Windmill Ranch RV Park & Cabins offer standard hookups and easier access to Amarillo and Canyon services. Because Happy is rural, RV renters typically use it as a launch point for the canyon, Route 66 stops in Amarillo, and Panhandle driving loops.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is reserved through Texas Parks and Wildlife, not a federal system. Sites, cabins, and the tent-only Fortress Cliff area are booked via the Texas State Parks reservation site or by phone. The standard booking window opens five months in advance, at 9:00 AM Central Time on the first day of that month. Group facilities are handled by the TPWD Customer Service Center at (512) 389-8900 and cannot be reserved online. Day-use entry is separate from camping. The park often reaches capacity, and reservations are recommended for both camping and day use. Day passes are available up to one month in advance. Private parks along I-27 such as Windmill Ranch RV Park & Cabins, Panhandle Lodging RV Park, and Palo Duro RV Park are booked directly with the operator. Sites fill quickly over weekends and holidays, so booking several weeks ahead is advisable.
