Campgrounds and RV parks near Hart, TX

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the headline attraction. The park has more than 30 miles of trails, and visitors can explore the canyon by foot, mountain bike, horse, or car, camp, geocache, study nature, or bird watch, and in summer attend a performance of the TEXAS Outdoor Musical at the Pioneer Amphitheater. Caprock Canyons State Park sits farther southeast and is known for its free-roaming bison. Bison roam the plains, bats roost in Clarity Tunnel, and visitors can explore 90 miles of trails, hike, ride horses or bikes, camp, geocache, or take a scenic drive. Lake Theo offers no-wake boating, fishing, and swimming. Closer to Amarillo, Cadillac Ranch, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon fill out a full weekend of stops. Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, southwest of Canyon, is a quieter option for birding.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of the Panhandle. Daytime highs sit in the 60s to low 80s, wildflowers bloom, and the bison at Caprock are active. Spring offers mild temperatures and wildflower blooms, making it a good window for hiking and wildlife viewing, and fall brings pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, with prairie grasses turning the landscape gold. Summer heat is the main planning constraint. Summertime temperatures in the canyon can be brutal, often ranging from the 90s to well over 100 degrees, so it is advisable to hike in the morning or late evening. The Lighthouse, Comanche, Givens Spicer Lowry, and Rock Garden trails at Palo Duro close from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory, so plan around midday. Winter is cool and dry with occasional snow on the plains. Some Panhandle state park facilities have partial closures for scheduled hunts in November and December, so check park alerts before booking late-season dates.

The Hart area is high plains: flat farmland, wind, big skies, and long straight county roads. Cell service is generally reliable in town and along the highways but drops off in the canyons. Coverage is very limited within Caprock Canyons, especially in canyon areas, so download maps, trail guides, and any necessary information before your visit. For RVers, roads to the major state parks are paved and rig-friendly. All roads to and within Caprock are all-weather paved surfaces, but unpaved roads outside the park can be muddy and slippery after heavy rain, so stick to marked routes after storms. At Palo Duro, some sites in the Mesquite, Sagebrush, and Hackberry areas will hold up to 60-foot RVs. Keep the 50-yard bison distance rule in mind at Caprock, and carry more water than you think you need in summer.
