Campgrounds and RV parks near Kress, TX

The main draw is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. There are approximately 50 miles of marked trails in the park, varying in length and difficulty, and most are multi-use, although some are specified for bikers only, hikers only, or equestrian only. The Old West Stables, located inside the canyon, offers guided horseback rides. A roughly 16-mile scenic drive descends to the canyon floor and passes overlooks, picnic areas, and the Trading Post. During summer, the Pioneer Amphitheater hosts the TEXAS Outdoor Musical, which typically runs from the first weekend in June through mid-August, Tuesdays through Sundays. Stargazing, wildlife viewing, and mountain biking round out the itinerary. Amarillo, about an hour north, adds museums and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame for a day trip off the campground.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Texas Panhandle. Days warm quickly, nights stay cool, and canyon trails remain open. Spring brings the region's wettest stretch and frequent thunderstorms with hail and occasional tornadoes, so watch radar before heading into low areas of the canyon. Summer is peak season at Palo Duro Canyon and campsites book well ahead. Heat is a real planning factor: temperatures on the canyon floor are often 5 to 10 degrees hotter than on the rim, and outdoor activities in the middle of the day can be dangerous. Hike early, carry extra water, and expect afternoon trail advisories. Winter is quieter and colder, with hard freezes and occasional snow. The state park stays open year-round, though portions close on a rotating schedule for public hunts in early December. During those windows the Equestrian area, sponsored youth group area, and backcountry hiking and camping are closed, while the rim cabins, visitor center, Sagebrush loop, and Old West Stables remain accessible.

Sites at private parks near Kress lean utilitarian: level gravel or grass pads, 30/50-amp service, water, and sewer, with Wi-Fi at most locations. Cabins are available at some. Expect open sky, steady wind, and limited shade typical of the High Plains. Inside Palo Duro Canyon, the descent from the rim is steep and winding, so drivers of longer rigs should check length limits for specific loops before booking. All campers check in at Park Headquarters before occupying a site, and late-arrival procedures apply after hours. Burn bans are commonly in effect, with wood and charcoal fires restricted; containerized fuel stoves with a shut-off valve are generally allowed for cooking. Cell coverage is patchy inside the canyon. Fuel up and stock groceries in Kress, Tulia, or Canyon.
