RV camping near Lakeport, Texas
Lakeport sits in Gregg County in the Piney Woods of East Texas, just south of Longview and within a short drive of Martin Creek Lake State Park. The area is a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access, tall pine cover, and quick reach to city services. Interstate 20 runs just north of town, making arrivals from Dallas, Shreveport, and Tyler straightforward.
Campground options near Lakeport range from full-hookup private parks to a state park on a reservoir. Fernbrook Park, Amazing Texas RV Resort and Campground, Cowboy Camp RV Park, and Twisted Pines RV Park sit within short drives, while Main - Martin Creek Lake State Park offers lakeside sites managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
The region has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, and precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, so most parks operate year-round. Weekends near holidays and fishing tournaments fill fastest, and lakeside sites at the state park book out well before peak season.
Things to do around Lakeport
Water recreation anchors most itineraries. Martin Creek Lake State Park offers year-round fishing, camping, paddling, lake swimming, hiking and cycling, water-skiing, picnicking, geocaching and nature photography. Because the lake is artificially warmed by the power plant, fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish is good year-round, and the designated swimming area has no lifeguards on duty, so swimming is at your own risk.
Beyond the state park, Lake Cherokee and Lake O' the Pines provide additional boating and fishing water within a short drive. In Longview, families can visit Longview World of Wonders, the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center, and the Longview Museum of Fine Arts on rainy days or as a break from lake time.
Hikers can explore over four miles of trails for hiking and biking that wind through a mixed hardwood and pine forest at Martin Creek Lake, including the footbridge to the island trails.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel here. The best time of year to visit Longview is mid March to May and October to mid November, when daytime temperatures are moderate and humidity is lower than in summer. The wettest month is usually May, so awnings and drainage matter at tent-friendly sites.
Summer is hot and humid, with regular afternoon thunderstorms. The air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from June to August, and shaded pull-through sites and 50-amp service become priorities for running air conditioning. Lake use peaks over Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends.
Winters are mild but damp. January, with a high-temperature average near 54 degrees Fahrenheit and a low-temperature average near 39 degrees Fahrenheit, is the coldest month, and Longview typically does not experience regular snowfall. Hard freezes occur but are brief, and most private RV parks stay open with water service through the winter.
How to book a campsite near Lakeport
For Main - Martin Creek Lake State Park, reservations for campsites can be made online through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) website or by phone. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 5 months in advance, and lakefront water-and-electric loops for spring and fall weekends typically go quickly after release. A day-use fee applies per person aged 13 and older in addition to the site fee.
Private parks near Lakeport, including Fernbrook Park, Amazing Texas RV Resort and Campground, Cowboy Camp RV Park, and Twisted Pines RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Monthly and seasonal stays are common, so nightly inventory can be limited near oilfield work cycles and large Longview events.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this part of East Texas are typically set among tall pines and hardwoods, which means shade, pine needles, and occasional falling limbs after storms. Cell coverage is generally good near I-20 and Longview but can drop at lakeside loops inside Martin Creek Lake State Park.
Wildlife is active. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, deer, squirrels, and raccoons, so food and trash should be secured overnight. The Argentine Ant, an invasive species, has been identified in some campsites in Martin Creek Lake State Park. The ants do not sting, and staff ask visitors to thoroughly inspect vehicles, RVs, and camping gear before leaving and to notify park staff if the ants are seen.
The park closes to day-use at 10 p.m., and non-camping visitors without an overnight activity permit must be out before the gates lock at 10 p.m., so plan late arrivals accordingly.
