Campgrounds and RV parks near Lockney, TX

The main draw is Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway, a park that totals 15,313 acres, has 90 miles of trails and is home to the Official Bison Herd of Texas. Hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing are the primary activities, and the Trailway itself is a long converted rail corridor popular with cyclists and equestrians. The Texas State Bison Herd is one of the main attractions of Caprock Canyons State Park, and visitors have a good chance of spotting the herd during a stay. Other wildlife that visitors may spot includes bobcats, gray foxes, jackrabbits, coyotes, pronghorn antelope, white-tailed deer, collared lizards and prairie rattlesnakes. Lake Theo, a 120-acre lake within the park, offers fishing from a pier or engineless boat for largemouth bass, white crappie, yellow perch and bluegill. Small-town stops in Floydada, Silverton, and Turkey round out easy half-day drives from Lockney.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime highs are pleasant, evenings cool off enough for sleep without heavy air conditioning, and the canyons show their best color in October and early November. Spring can bring strong wind and occasional severe thunderstorms typical of the southern High Plains. Summer brings intense heat, with afternoon highs frequently in the low nineties, though low humidity and cool nights make evenings manageable. Late summer is also the wettest stretch, with September historically the peak precipitation month. Flash flooding is possible in the canyons after heavy rain, and unpaved roads outside of Caprock Canyons can be very muddy and slippery after periods of excessive rainfall, so it is best not to drive them until they dry. Winters are short but cold and windy, with occasional snow. Visitors should also check park calendars ahead of trips: public hunt dates in mid-November and portions of December can close the entire park except for the Trailway during certain December hunt windows.

Expect a rural, small-town setting. Private parks near Lockney tend to be straightforward gravel pull-throughs with full hookups, laundry, and basic bathhouses rather than resort amenities. Cell coverage is generally adequate in town but can drop out inside the canyons. At Caprock Canyons, RV camping spots are available with some sites including electric and water hookups, and RVs can also camp in the equestrian campground although hookups are not available there. All roads to the park and in the park are all-weather roads with paved surfaces, though interior access to trailheads may involve short unpaved spurs. Bring extra water for park stays. The park has detected higher than normal nitrate levels in its water system, and infants under 6 months, pregnant women, and people with specific health concerns should plan on bringing water when visiting. Pets are welcome on leash, and shade is limited, so awnings and sunshades are worth having.
