Campgrounds and RV parks near Morton, TX

The signature outdoor draw is Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, reached via Highway 214 north of Morton. The 6,440-acre refuge is the oldest national wildlife refuge in Texas, established in 1935, and it hosts one of the largest concentrations of lesser sandhill cranes in North America. Three saline lakes, White, Goose, and Pauls, are located within the refuge, and a nature trail leaves from near the campground. Birding continues year-round, with black-tailed prairie dogs, badgers, mule deer, foxes, bobcats, golden eagles, Swainson's hawks, and burrowing owls around the prairie dog town. Farther afield, Lubbock adds museums, the Texas Tech campus, and craft breweries within an easy day trip. Grulla National Wildlife Refuge, a companion salt-lake site just across the New Mexico line, is another quiet stop for winter crane viewing.

The South Plains around Morton have a semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are long and hot, with afternoon highs often near or above 90°F from June through August, cooler nights, and scattered thunderstorms. Air-conditioning capacity and shaded pads matter in this window, and travelers should watch for high winds and blowing dust in late spring and early summer. Winter is short but genuinely cold at this elevation, with freezing overnight lows common from December through February and occasional snow. Winter is also peak sandhill crane season at Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, when numbers peak between December and mid-February, often at 100,000 or more if water levels allow. The cranes are most visible at dawn and at dusk, as they leave the lakes during the day to feed in nearby fields. Spring and fall are the most comfortable travel seasons. September through early November brings mild days, cool nights, and the leading edge of the crane migration, while March through May delivers wildflowers and mild temperatures, tempered by the region's characteristic wind.

Expect flat, open terrain, big skies, and steady wind. Sites at nearby RV parks are generally level gravel or grass with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer. Shade is limited across the region, so awnings and reflective window covers help in summer. Cell coverage in Morton itself is reasonable on major carriers, but drops off on refuge back roads. At Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, the visitor contact station is often unstaffed, roads within the refuge include gravel and caliche, and restrooms are available at Paul's Lake Overlook and in the campground. Prairie rattlesnakes also use the prairie dog dens and are common throughout the refuge, so visitors should use caution. Groceries, fuel, and hardware are limited in Morton itself. Plan to top up in Levelland or Lubbock, carry drinking water, and expect a quiet, rural stay rather than a resort experience.
