Campgrounds and RV parks near Muleshoe, TX

The main draw is Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge. Between late fall and early spring, the refuge hosts one of the largest concentrations of lesser sandhill cranes in North America, with peak numbers typically from December through mid-February. Spring and fall migrations bring shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors to the playa lakes, and resident wildlife includes prairie dogs, burrowing owls, jackrabbits, mule deer, and the occasional badger or coyote. On-refuge activities include hiking, wildlife photography, picnicking, and limited drawn hunts. In town, families can stop at the National Mule Memorial and the Muleshoe Heritage Center. Day trips reach Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge to the north and Clovis, New Mexico, to the west for shopping and Blackwater Draw.

The Muleshoe area has a semi-arid High Plains climate with four distinct seasons and persistent wind. Summer is the wettest part of the year, with most rain arriving as afternoon and evening thunderstorms between June and August. Daytime highs commonly reach the low 90s, but the elevation near 3,800 feet keeps nights comfortable, often in the mid-60s. Hail and severe storms are possible, so monitor forecasts and pick sites with awnings tucked in. Spring is windy and increasingly active for storms, but wildflowers and early migratory birds make it a strong shoulder season. Fall brings the most stable weather: warm afternoons, cool nights, low humidity, and excellent visibility. Winter is short but genuinely cold, with overnight lows below freezing, occasional snow, and strong north winds. Winter is also crane season at the refuge, so RVers who can handle cold nights are rewarded with the area's signature wildlife spectacle. Reservations remain easy to secure outside of major holiday weekends.

Expect a quiet, working agricultural region rather than a tourist hub. RV parks in and near Muleshoe lean utilitarian: gravel or grass pads, full hookups, basic laundry and restrooms, and friendly long-term residents alongside overnight travelers. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along the highways but can drop off at the refuge. The land is flat, open, and largely treeless, so wind is a constant factor. Secure awnings, slide toppers, and outdoor gear before leaving the site. Stock groceries and propane in Muleshoe or Clovis, because services thin out quickly once visitors leave the main highways. At the refuge, roads are unpaved and can turn slick after rain, and rattlesnakes are present in warmer months, so keep pets leashed and watch where children step off-trail.
