Campgrounds near Nocona Hills
Nocona Hills sits on the south shore of Lake Nocona in Montague County, roughly two hours north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and a short drive from the Texas-Oklahoma border. The area is rural North Texas country: rolling terrain, oak and mesquite cover, and a lake known statewide for bass fishing. RV travelers use it as a quieter alternative to the busier reservoirs closer to DFW.
RV options in the immediate area are small, private parks rather than large resorts. Cruisers RV Park and Flying Horse RV Park serve travelers looking for hookups near town and the lake, while Campers Paradise RV Park offers a more rustic setting. The Veranda Inn provides an option for travelers pairing an RV site with indoor lodging for extended family. Wilson Christmas Tree Farm and RV Park sits across the Red River in Wilson, Oklahoma, about forty minutes north, and works well as a paired stop for travelers heading toward the Arbuckle region.
Public lake access is managed by the City of Nocona, and additional state camping is available within an hour or so at Lake Ray Roberts, Lake Arrowhead State Park, and Lake Texoma.
Things to do around Nocona Hills
Lake Nocona is the main draw. The reservoir is classified among the top bass fishing lakes in Texas, and public boat ramps at Joe Benton, Weldon Robb, and Boone parks make launching straightforward. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming are common in the coves during warmer months. Anglers also target catfish, crappie, white bass, and sunfish.
On land, the Nocona Hills community includes an 18-hole golf course at Nocona Hills Country Club, open to outside play. In town, the Tales N Trails Museum covers regional ranching, Native American, leather, and oil and gas history, and the Nocona bootmaking heritage remains part of the local identity.
Day trips widen the options. Lake Ray Roberts State Park sits about an hour southeast with paved trails, and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge across the Oklahoma line offers bison viewing and hiking within a two-hour drive.

Spring, from March through May, is the most popular window for RV travel to the area. Wildflowers bloom across pastureland, lake temperatures climb, and fishing activity peaks. Spring is also the wettest and most storm-prone season in North Texas, with May averaging the highest rainfall and the greatest chance of severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes.
Summers are hot. July and August daily highs routinely reach the mid-90s and often exceed 100 degrees, and afternoon heat index values can be extreme. Burn bans are common in Montague County during dry summer stretches, restricting open fires and sometimes charcoal grilling at campsites. Lake use is heavy on weekends and around the July 4 fireworks show at Weldon Robb Park.
Fall brings cooler evenings, lighter crowds, and generally stable weather through October and November, making it a strong shoulder season for RV trips. Winter is mild by national standards but can bring hard freezes, occasional ice, and short cold snaps; some private parks reduce services or close sections in January and February.
How to book
Private RV parks near Nocona Hills, including Cruisers RV Park, Flying Horse RV Park, Campers Paradise RV Park, and The Veranda Inn, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Wilson Christmas Tree Farm and RV Park across the state line books directly as well. Third-party listing platforms sometimes carry a subset of sites, but calling ahead is the most reliable way to confirm hookups, rig-length limits, and pet policies.
For state parks used as day trips or overflow, Texas Parks and Wildlife opens campsite reservations five months in advance through its central booking system, and popular parks like Ray Roberts fill quickly for spring and holiday weekends. Lake Nocona city parks at Weldon Robb, Joe Benton, and Boone are free public access and open year-round, with no reservations required for day use.
Book spring and fall weekends four to eight weeks ahead. Weekday and off-season stays are often bookable within a week.
What to expect on site
Parks around Nocona Hills are small and low-key rather than resort-style. Expect gravel or grass pads, full or partial hookups depending on the site, and limited on-site amenities beyond restrooms, laundry, and basic Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is generally usable but varies by carrier along the lake.
The terrain is gently rolling with scattered trees, so most pads are level but shade varies site to site. Wildlife including white-tailed deer, armadillos, and a wide range of birds is common around properties. Rattlesnakes are present in warm months; keep pets leashed and inspect sites at dusk.
Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Nocona proper, about ten minutes from most campgrounds. The nearest larger service centers for RV parts, urgent care, and big-box shopping are Gainesville and Wichita Falls, each roughly forty-five minutes away.
