Campgrounds near Olton, Texas
Olton sits on the Llano Estacado in Lamb County, Texas, and served as the county's first seat from 1908 until Littlefield won a county-seat election in 1946. The town is small, under 2,000 residents at the 2020 census, and functions as a quiet base for RV travel across the South Plains between Lubbock and the New Mexico line. Elevation is just over 3,600 feet, so nights stay cool even during hot summer stretches.
Campground options in the immediate area are practical rather than scenic. The Hitchin' Post RV Park and Cabins, Prairie Land RV Park, Windmill Ranch RV Park & Cabins, Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park, and Red Raider RV Park cover the Olton-to-Lubbock corridor. Most are full-hookup private parks aimed at long-haul travelers, oilfield workers, and Texas Tech visitors, with pull-through sites and 30/50-amp service common.
For nature-based camping, RV travelers typically pair a private-park stay near Olton with a day trip to Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, about 20 miles south of Muleshoe on Texas State Highway 214, the oldest national wildlife refuge in Texas.
Things to do near Olton
Wildlife viewing is the headline draw. Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge sits in the High Plains of west Texas and hosts one of the largest concentrations of lesser sandhill cranes in North America, with an estimated 15 percent of the lesser sandhill crane population depending on the refuge between fall and spring. Visitors can take in Paul's Lake, White Lake, and Goose Lake, along with birding, wildlife photography, hiking, and picnicking.
In town, Olton has a small-town main street with local history markers tied to its early years as the Lamb County seat. Lubbock, roughly 50 miles southeast, adds the National Ranching Heritage Center, the Buddy Holly Center, Texas Tech athletics, and Mackenzie Park. Grulla National Wildlife Refuge, a salt lake important as a roost site for lesser sandhill cranes in winter, is also within day-trip range.

- winter
December - February
52° / 32°F 15 mmCold, dry, windy; peak sandhill crane viewing at refuges.
The area has a semi-arid High Plains climate with sharp seasonal swings. Summers are hot and mostly clear, winters are short, very cold, snowy, and windy, and the temperature typically varies from about 27°F to 91°F over the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, though spring brings strong wind and thunderstorm risk.
Wildlife timing matters. The refuges near Muleshoe host one of North America's largest concentrations of sandhill cranes, which normally begin arriving around the end of September, with numbers peaking between December and mid-February. That makes late fall and winter the prime birding season, even though nights get cold.
Summer is the wettest stretch. Olton sees hot summers, cold winters with occasional snow, and generally dry conditions except for summer thunderstorms and heavy downpours. Book early for Texas Tech home football weekends in fall, when Lubbock-area RV parks fill quickly.
How to book campgrounds near Olton
Private RV parks around Olton, including The Hitchin' Post RV Park and Cabins, Prairie Land RV Park, Windmill Ranch RV Park & Cabins, Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park, and Red Raider RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Many take walk-ins on weeknights but fill on football Saturdays and during harvest season, so calling ahead is worth it.
For public land, camping is allowed at Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge in a designated area with restrooms, grills, picnic tables, and space to park. Sites are first-come, first-served and not reservable. State parks farther afield, such as Caprock Canyons and Palo Duro Canyon, use Texas Parks and Wildlife's online reservation system, which opens a five-month booking window.
What to expect
Expect open country. The Llano Estacado is flat, high, and windy, with cotton fields, grain elevators, and long sight lines rather than forests. Cell service is generally reliable along US-70 and around Lubbock but can thin out on the ranch roads near the wildlife refuges.
Private parks near Olton skew utilitarian: gravel or caliche pads, full hookups, laundry, and simple bathhouses. Big-rig access is straightforward given wide rural roads. At Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge there are no hookups, and the refuge is best treated as primitive camping paired with wildlife viewing.
Wind is the constant. Awning management, leveling on hard-packed sites, and topping off fresh water before leaving town are basic habits. Fuel and groceries are easiest in Plainview, Littlefield, or Lubbock rather than in Olton itself.
