Campgrounds and RV parks near Onalaska, TX

The lake drives most activity. Boating, swimming, jet skiing, and paddling are the main draws in warm months, and shore fishing, pier fishing, and boat fishing run year-round. On The Lake RV Resort has a full marina with three ramps, covered slips, transient docks, and a fishing pier, which is useful for guests without their own boat access. Lake Livingston State Park offers about 5.7 miles of trails, a swimming area, self-service paddle craft rentals through Paddle EZ, and bank fishing, and multiple pairs of bald eagles nest around the lake with sightings most common in fall and winter. Alligators live in the surrounding wetlands, so keep dogs leashed and away from the shoreline. Off the water, the Big Sandy Loop wildlife driving trail runs through the area, the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe holds an annual powwow each June, and Houston museums, the Houston Zoo, and NASA's Johnson Space Center sit about 75 miles south for a full day trip.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel. March through May brings warm days, wildflowers, and the strongest white bass run, but it is also a wet stretch and the peak period for severe thunderstorms and river flooding. Historic flooding tied to the Trinity River and Lake Livingston Dam releases has occurred during spring storm events, so check river and reservoir status before booking low-lying sites. Summer runs hot and humid, with average highs in the mid-90s and heavy demand at lakefront parks. Book weekends and holidays well in advance. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak tropical activity in August and September; storms reaching this far inland can still bring damaging wind, power outages, and prolonged rain, as seen with Hurricane Beryl and Hurricane Harvey. Winter is mild, quieter, and better suited to fishing and longer stays. Overnight lows near freezing are possible in January, so RVers should be ready to manage exposed water hoses.

Most Onalaska-area RV resorts are flat, tree-shaded, and family-oriented, with concrete or gravel pads, full hookups, and paved interior roads that accommodate larger rigs. Lakefront parks typically add a beach, pool, and marina access. On The Lake RV Resort, for example, has a waterfront pool, hot tub, dog park, playground, and an on-site restaurant. Check-in at private parks is usually around midday for RVs and later for cabins. After-hours arrival at Lake Livingston State Park is handled through a self-serve kiosk on the north side of Park Headquarters, and all overnight campers still need to register at headquarters by 9 a.m. the next morning. Cell coverage on the lake is generally good but can drop in wooded loops. Bring insect repellent, a rain jacket, and sun protection, and keep food and trash secured against ants and raccoons.
