Camping near Perryton, Texas
Perryton sits in the northeast corner of the Texas Panhandle, a few miles south of the Texas / Oklahoma state line, at the intersection of U.S. Route 83 and Texas State Highway 15. It functions as a service town for RV travelers crossing the High Plains between Amarillo and southern Kansas, with fuel, groceries, and repair options that are hard to find elsewhere in the region.
Options inside town lean toward practical, full-hookup stopovers. Ambassador Inn and RV Park and Shady Acres RV Park cover overnight and short-stay needs close to Highway 83, while Seven Winds RV Park serves travelers looking for a longer base. For state-park style camping, the closest option is Pioneer Campground - Beaver Dunes State Park, roughly an hour north across the Oklahoma line near Beaver.
A second cluster of public camping sits about 45 miles north in Kansas at Arkalon Parks, run by the City of Liberal in the Cimarron River valley. Between these anchors, RV travelers can build a plains loop with easy driving days and a mix of hookup and light-service sites.
Things to do around Perryton
The signature draw north of Perryton is Beaver Dunes Park, a 520-acre park in the panhandle region offering dune buggy riding on 300 acres of sand hills, fishing, hiking trails, playground and two campgrounds. Guests at Pioneer Campground - Beaver Dunes State Park have direct access to the dunes along with the one mile long Pioneer Interpretive Trail, which is appropriate for hikers of all skill levels.
Arkalon Parks adds a different flavor. Nestled in the Cimarron River valley, the main campground includes both tent and RV campsites, playground equipment, volleyball court, sheltered picnic area, bathhouses and nature trails. Fishing allowed from 7 am to 9 pm at multiple ponds, and birders regularly spot waterfowl and raptors. Nearby, the historic Samson of the Cimarron Railroad Bridge is a popular photo stop just outside the park.

50° / 25°F 15 mmCold and windy; arctic outbreaks and snowfall possible
The Panhandle climate drives the camping calendar. In Perryton, the summers are hot and mostly clear; the winters are very cold, snowy, and partly cloudy; and it is windy year round. Spring brings the most active weather, with April and May typically the wettest months, and the region sits within Tornado Alley where severe storms are common during late spring.
Summer is the peak use window for the dunes and lake sites, though afternoon thunderstorms roll through frequently. Arkalon Parks operates on a defined season: the park is open April 1 to October 15 each year, so late-season travelers should confirm dates before routing through Liberal.
Winter camping is possible at in-town RV parks and at Beaver Dunes, which stays open year-round, but arctic outbreaks are a real risk. Winter mornings are very cold, with over 130 mornings on average falling to or below freezing at the local climate station. Fall shoulder weeks in September and early October tend to offer the best balance of mild days and thinner crowds.
How to book campgrounds near Perryton
Reservation systems vary by operator. Arkalon Parks uses an online platform: overnight stays can be booked online at the RoverPass profile, and the park also lists sites for instant booking through partner platforms. Camp host phone booking is available as a backup during posted office hours.
Beaver Dunes Park is managed by the City of Beaver rather than the Oklahoma state park system. This used to be a state park, but around 2011 the state closed it and the city took over. Reservations are handled by phone; there are no online reservations, and payment is handled at the entrance through a drop box, so arriving with cash and small bills is a good idea.
In-town parks including Ambassador Inn and RV Park, Shady Acres RV Park, and Seven Winds RV Park generally take reservations by phone; calling ahead is the most reliable path during oilfield work cycles when longer-term guests fill sites.
What to expect on the ground
Expect wind. Reviewers at Beaver Dunes consistently mention gusty conditions, with one noting gusts of roughly 30 to 40 mph overnight. Level jacks, awning discipline, and secure exterior gear matter more here than in most regions.
Hookups and amenities are modest but functional at public sites. At Pioneer Campground, the campground has 13 water and electric sites with direct access to the dunes, and both campgrounds have a comfort station with hot showers, with the dump station located at Hackberry Bend Campground. Arkalon offers concrete pads, water, and 30/50 amp power, with a shared dump station rather than full hookups at each site.
Access road conditions and gate hours are worth checking in advance. At Arkalon, the gate is locked from 10 PM to 7 AM, so late arrivals should coordinate with the camp host.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perryton%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Perryton, Texas?
Good news: for nearly every RV rental in Perryton, your regular driver's license is all you need. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for personal-use RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, and Class C rigs on RVezy fall well under that line. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book, and RVezy verifies approved drivers through the platform during checkout. Visiting Perryton from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to roll out toward Lake Meredith.

Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the wide-open Panhandle highways with peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, which means you decide how much extra cushion feels right for your trip. If you get a flat on US-83 heading toward Canadian or need a jump start at Wolf Creek Park, one phone call gets help dispatched any hour of the day or night. That kind of built-in safety net is why first-timers feel confident renting an RV in Perryton.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Perryton RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. Spring storms can roll across the Texas Panhandle quickly, so it's reassuring to know the policy is consistent and transparent across every listing. Pro tip: book early to secure your dates, then keep an eye on the National Weather Service Amarillo forecast as your trip approaches so you can plan with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Perryton RV trip?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Perryton options are available on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see hosts who happily welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Perryton is a great pup destination because Wolf Creek Park allows leashed dogs on its trails along the creek, and the wide-open spaces of the Texas Panhandle mean plenty of room to roam. Pack a collapsible water bowl, since summer ground temps on asphalt can get toasty. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask about nearby off-leash spots, most local owners know the best dog-friendly stops between Perryton and Lake Meredith.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Perryton?
Yes, RV delivery in Perryton is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Wolf Creek Park, a local RV park, or even a private property in town, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when you search and enter your destination address to see hosts who serve that location and any per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you're flying into Amarillo (about 115 miles south) and don't want to deal with driving a big rig up US-287 your first day out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Perryton%2C%20TexasHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Perryton?
Hosts in Perryton set their own mileage policies, and many include a generous daily allotment (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day) with the option to add unlimited mileage as an upgrade at checkout. That's great news because Perryton sits at a crossroads of incredible road-trip routes: Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is about 75 miles south, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is roughly 150 miles southwest, Black Mesa State Park in Oklahoma is about 110 miles northwest, and Amarillo is around 115 miles south. For a longer RV road trip from Perryton, Santa Fe is a scenic 350 miles west. Pro tip: ask hosts about an RV rental with unlimited mileage package if you're planning a multi-state loop.

Pro tip: Wolf Creek Park is the local insider favorite for stargazing thanks to the dark Panhandle skies.
co.ochiltree.tx.us/When is the best time to visit Perryton in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Perryton RV trip is April through early June and again from mid-September through October, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 65°F to 80°F range and nights cool off pleasantly. July and August get hot (highs around 92°F to 95°F) with afternoon thunderstorms, but the dry High Plains air makes it more bearable than humid East Texas. Winters dip into the 20s°F at night with occasional snow, so heated rigs are a must if you visit December through February. Pro tip: aim for the last weekend in August for the Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration, Perryton's biggest local festival with a parade, rodeo, and barbecue cook-off.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Perryton&state=TX&site=AMAI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Perryton?
You're going to do great, and Perryton is honestly one of the easier places in Texas to learn. Traffic is light, roads like US-83 and US-15 are straight and well-maintained, and there's nothing like the city stress of Houston or Dallas. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering generators, slide-outs, holding tanks, propane, and driving tips, so first time renting an RV here feels manageable. The biggest local thing to know: Panhandle winds can gust 25 to 40 mph, so grip the wheel firmly on open stretches. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around town before heading out so you get comfortable with the size before tackling the highway.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Perryton trip?
Help is never far away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, which covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, whether you're broken down on FM-281 outside Perryton or out near Lake Meredith. Just call the number in your booking confirmation and a dispatcher will coordinate help to your exact location. Your host is also a phone call away for quick troubleshooting questions, since they know their rig inside and out. RVezy customer support is available throughout your trip too. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and dashboard before you leave so you can give the dispatcher everything they need in one quick text.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Perryton RV rental into Oklahoma or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome, and Perryton's location near the Oklahoma border makes for some fantastic multi-state road trips. The Oklahoma line is only about 8 miles north of town, and popular routes include heading up to Black Mesa State Park (Oklahoma's highest point), east into Kansas, or west toward New Mexico. Just confirm your route with your host during the booking conversation so they know your plans. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage don't extend across that border. Pro tip: a classic RV road trip from Perryton is the four-corners loop through TX, OK, NM, and CO, totally doable in a week.
travelok.com/What should I budget for fuel on a Perryton RV trip?
Fuel is a real part of the budget, but Panhandle gas prices typically run a bit below the Texas average, which helps. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 15 to 20 mpg for a campervan, and 12 to 16 mpg for trucks pulling travel trailers. A typical Perryton-to-Palo Duro-Canyon-and-back loop (about 300 miles) in a Class C will cost roughly $90 to $130 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Perryton or Pampa rather than at smaller crossroads stations, prices in town are usually 20 to 40 cents per gallon cheaper than out in ranch country.
comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/fuels/How far ahead should I book a campground near Perryton?
You've got more flexibility around Perryton than at many Texas destinations. For private parks like Shady Acres or Ambassador Inn, booking 2 to 4 weeks ahead is plenty for most weekends. Wolf Creek Park is largely first-come, first-served and rarely fills up except during major festivals or hunting season (October through December), when arriving by Thursday afternoon is wise. For Lake Meredith's Sanford-Yake Campground (10 reservable RV sites with hookups), call 806-865-3131 a month or two ahead, especially for summer weekends. Pro tip: if you're chasing the Wheatheart of the Nation festival in late August, lock in your in-town RV park spot 6 to 8 weeks early because Perryton swells with visitors.
recreation.gov/camping/poi/10085536What are the local driving conditions like around Perryton?
Driving in and out of Perryton is generally easy and stress-free. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, the highways (US-83, US-15, and Highway 70) are wide and well-paved, and there's almost no urban traffic. The two real things to plan for: strong crosswinds (gusts of 25 to 40 mph are common, especially in spring) and sudden thunderstorms that can include hail, lightning, or even tornadoes from April through June. Pull over and wait out severe weather rather than pushing through. Pro tip: tune your RV's radio to local AM stations or use a weather app with alerts for the Texas Panhandle, the National Weather Service office in Amarillo is excellent at calling out cells early.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at Perryton-area campgrounds?
Most Perryton-area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Shady Acres RV Park offers 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, cable, WiFi, showers, and laundry. Ambassador Inn and RV Park includes full hookups, showers, and cable TV. Whigham Park has 5 free pull-through sites with 30 amp electric and water plus a dump station. Wolf Creek Park provides electric and water hookups, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms. For dumping waste and filling fresh water on the road, Whigham Park and most private parks in town offer dump stations to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Perryton before heading to Lake Meredith, since several Lake Meredith campgrounds are primitive with no potable water.
nps.gov/lamr/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's included inside a typical Perryton RV rental?
Your motorhome rental Perryton or travel trailer comes ready to camp. Expect comfortable beds (usually sleeping 4 to 8 depending on size), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for safe travel. Many rigs also include a TV, indoor and outdoor speakers, awnings, and outdoor camp chairs. Generators (for off-grid power) and onboard WiFi are often available either standard or as add-ons. Linens, kitchen kits, and camp gear vary by host, so check the listing's amenities list. Pro tip: message the host through RVezy before booking to confirm anything specific like a coffee maker or extra propane tank, most are happy to throw in extras.
tceq.texas.gov/What add-ons and pickup logistics should I know about?
Hosts in Perryton offer plenty of useful add-ons to customize your trip: generators ($25 to $50/day), kitchen kits ($30 to $75 one-time), bedding packages ($25 to $50), camp chairs and tables, bike racks, and even fishing gear for Lake Meredith trips. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Perryton, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough where they show you every system. Many hosts also offer delivery for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check the daily allotment and overage rate (usually $0.30 to $0.50 per extra mile) on each listing page. Pro tip: ask about a Lake Meredith fishing add-on bundle, some local hosts know the lake and stock their rigs with rods and tackle.
tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/lakes/meredith/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is handled securely through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You'll pay the rental cost plus protection and any add-ons when you book, with no surprise fees later. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. The best way to avoid any deposit issue is simple: do a thorough walk-through photo set at pickup and return, dump tanks before returning if required, and return with the same fuel level. Pro tip: keep your pickup and return inspection photos saved on your phone as your own backup record.
