Campgrounds and RV parks near Petrolia, TX

The main draw is water recreation at Lake Arrowhead State Park, where fishing, boating, swimming, paddling, and disc golf are all available. Anglers can fish for crappie, bass, and catfish from a lighted pier, with no fishing license needed inside the state park. Over five miles of multi-use trails wind through the Rolling Plains, including the half-mile Dragonfly Trail, the 4.4-mile Onion Creek Trail near the lake and disc golf course, and the Mesquite Ridge Trail connecting the campground to Onion Creek. Waurika Lake, across the state line in Oklahoma, offers a marina, boat ramps, and shoreline picnic areas. In Wichita Falls, families visit Lucy Park and its waterfall replica, the River Bend Nature Center, and Castaway Cove Waterpark. Bird watchers can pick up a checklist at park headquarters and look for prairie species around Lake Arrowhead.

North Texas has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and short, variable winters. Spring, from March through May, brings the most comfortable temperatures for camping but also the region's heaviest rainfall and severe thunderstorm risk. Petrolia sits inside Tornado Alley, and the April to June window is the most active period for severe weather. Summer is very hot. July averages a high near 97 degrees Fahrenheit with an average low around 72, and heat advisories are common through July and August. RV renters should confirm their rig's air conditioning is sized for the load and plan water activities for morning and evening. Fall, from mid-September through early November, is the second-favored season, with warm days, cooler nights, and lower storm frequency. Winter is generally mild but volatile. Cold fronts can drop temperatures suddenly, and occasional hard freezes affect water hookups. Some private parks keep hookups active year-round, while state park facilities may reduce services during hard freezes.

The landscape is open rolling prairie with mesquite, oak motts, and reservoirs rather than dense forest. Shade is limited at many sites, so awnings and window covers matter during summer stays. Cell service around Lake Arrowhead State Park is generally fair, and coverage is more reliable at the private parks closer to Wichita Falls. The state park's water and electric campground has eight loops with six sites per loop and four pull-through sites, plus 19 water-only sites, a primitive walk-in area, and an equestrian camping area. Wind is a persistent feature of the region, so leveling blocks, secured awnings, and stake-down mats are worthwhile. Wildlife around the reservoirs includes deer, armadillos, and a wide range of birds, and fire restrictions can appear quickly during dry stretches.
