Campgrounds near Preston, Texas
Preston sits on a narrow peninsula jutting into Lake Texoma, on the Texas-Oklahoma border. The reservoir spans about 89,000 acres, is impounded by Denison Dam on the Red River, and was completed in 1944. The area is a short drive north of Sherman and Denison, and roughly 90 minutes from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, making it one of the closest major lake destinations for North Texas RV travelers.
RV options around Preston fall into three buckets: private resorts with full hookups and lake access, a Texas state park with a mix of developed sites and an overflow area, and a scattering of Corps of Engineers parks along the shoreline. Lighthouse Resort and Marina and Lake Texoma RV Resort cater to travelers who want marina services and paved sites, while Oakview RV Park and Country Dream RV Park offer quieter, more traditional RV park layouts a few minutes inland.
Eisenhower State Park sits on the southern shore of Lake Texoma in Grayson County, about five miles west of Denison, and covers 423 acres named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born in Denison in 1890. Its Overflow area handles late arrivals when the main loops are full.
Things to do around Preston
The lake drives most trips. Lake Texoma is the most developed and most popular lake within the USACE Tulsa District, attracting around 6 million visitors a year. Its striped bass population is legendary among Texas anglers, and guided striper charters run out of marinas on both the Texas and Oklahoma sides. Crappie, catfish, and white bass round out the year-round catch.
On land, Eisenhower State Park has miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails along rocky bluffs, plus a small OHV area. The park has ATV trails approximately 8 acres in size that are suitable for novice riders, located at the back of the park across from the Fossil Ridge Camping Area; ATVs are not permitted on park roads or trails and must be trailered to the trailhead. Families with kids gravitate to the swim cove, the lighted fishing pier, and the marina store, which rents kayaks and canoes.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel on Lake Texoma. From late March through May, temperatures are comfortable, wildflowers bloom along the state-park trails, and striper fishing hits its spring peak as fish move into the coves and up the creeks. April and May are typically the wettest months, so come prepared for severe North Texas thunderstorms.
Summer is the busiest season by a wide margin. The park's direct lakefront access makes it a premier destination for water sports, and the 154 campsites, including full hookup RV sites and a signature cabin, fill up fast on weekends from March through October. Weekend sites at both the state park and popular private resorts should be locked in well in advance. Heat is significant in July and August, with highs routinely in the mid-90s.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower lake traffic, and strong striper action into November. Winter camping is possible: Eisenhower State Park is open year-round, though some private resorts reduce services or close amenities during the coldest weeks.
How to book a site
For Eisenhower State Park, reservations go through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 5 months in advance. Campsites at the Overflow Campground are first-come, first-served. Summer weekends book out within hours of opening, so set a calendar reminder for the exact five-month release date.
Private parks around Preston, including Lighthouse Resort and Marina, Lake Texoma RV Resort, Oakview RV Park, and Country Dream RV Park, book directly through each property's website or phone. Holiday weekends fill months ahead. No-shows are handled strictly at the state park: if you do not check in by noon of the day after your scheduled arrival, the rest of the reservation is cancelled, entrance fees are refunded but other fees are forfeited, so call the park if you will arrive after that cutoff.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Preston are two-lane and generally easy for larger rigs, though the final approach to some lakeside resorts includes short grades and tight turns near the shoreline. Cell coverage is decent in town and along the main highways but can drop in the state park. Download park maps from TPWD before your visit, as cell service can be spotty near the lake.
Eisenhower State Park does not have a gate, so no gate code is necessary for entry. Quiet hours are observed overnight, and shoreline sites can be exposed to sun and wind. Bring sun cover: summer afternoons on the water get hot fast, and afternoon storms can develop quickly in spring and early summer.

Texas does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal-use RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes, so your everyday license covers travel trailers, campervans, Class B, and Class C motorhomes around Lake Texoma. To book on RVezy you must be 25 or older with a valid license, and you will verify your ID securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), picking the plan that fits your family RV trip in Preston. The plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you meaningful peace of mind. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lake Texoma RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every Preston, TX RV rental, and there is a grace-period window after booking when you can cancel and receive a full refund. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you cancel and circumstances such as natural disasters, which can matter in North Texas where spring storms occasionally roll across Grayson County. The current details are on the RVezy Help Center and in your booking confirmation, so you can review them anytime. Pro tip: message the host before booking if your dates are tentative, many are happy to discuss flexibility around summer weekends at Lake Texoma.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Preston, TX?
Absolutely, Preston is one of the most dog-loving corners of Lake Texoma. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Preston, TX, just toggle the 'Pet-Friendly' filter on RVezy and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome four-legged guests (some charge a small pet fee, which is shown on the listing). Once you arrive, your pup will love Eisenhower State Park's shoreline trails and the open beach areas at Preston Bend Campground, where leashed dogs are welcome. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, about 25 minutes west, also allows leashed pets on auto tour roads. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, summer pavement at the Preston Peninsula marinas gets hot by mid-afternoon.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhower/park_information/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite at Lake Texoma?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to RV. Many Preston, TX hosts offer RV delivery directly to Lake Texoma campgrounds like Preston Bend, Eisenhower State Park, Juniper Point, and Cedar Mills Marina, so you can fly into DFW or Dallas Love Field, drive up Highway 289, and walk straight into a fully set-up rig. Just filter listings by 'Delivery' on RVezy, enter your campsite address, and you'll see the delivery fee upfront (typically priced per mile from the host's home base). Your host will level the RV, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before leaving. It's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233595How far can I drive my RV rental from Preston, TX?
You've got serious range from Preston. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and quite a few offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a wandering Texas road trip. From Preston you can reach downtown Dallas in about 75 miles, Fort Worth in 90 miles, Turner Falls in Oklahoma in roughly 70 miles, Broken Bow Lake in about 200 miles, and Hot Springs, Arkansas in around 320 miles. The mileage policy is listed clearly on every listing, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger loop through the Hill Country or the Ouachitas, filter for unlimited-mileage rigs before you start comparing prices.
txdot.gov/data-maps/maps.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Preston, TX?
The best campgrounds near Preston, TX cluster right along Lake Texoma: Preston Bend Park (a US Army Corps of Engineers campground on the Preston Peninsula with electric and water hookups and a boat ramp), Eisenhower State Park (water and electric sites, fishing piers, and trails), Cedar Mills Marina & RV Resort on the Texas side near Gordonville (30/50-amp hookups with sandy beaches and Wi-Fi), Thousand Trails Lake Texoma in Gordonville, and Juniper Point on Highway 377. Pro tip: Preston Bend is a seasonal Corps park that typically closes in the off-season, so for late-fall RV camping in Preston, book Eisenhower State Park or Cedar Mills instead and confirm dates on Recreation.gov before your trip.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233595When is the best time to take an RV trip from Preston, TX?
April through early June and mid-September through October are the sweet spot for a Preston RV trip. Spring brings wildflowers, comfortable highs in the 70s and 80s, and the start of striper-fishing season on Lake Texoma. Summer (June through August) is hot and humid with highs in the low to mid-90s, great for swimming but you'll want a rig with strong air conditioning. Fall cools back into the 70s with crisp lake mornings, ideal for hiking at Eisenhower State Park. Winters are short and mild (40s and 50s) but several Corps of Engineers campgrounds close from October to March. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of April for a magic combo of wildflowers, full campgrounds reopening, and pre-summer pricing.
weather.gov/fwd/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll do great, and Preston is a forgiving place to start. The roads around the Preston Peninsula (Highway 289, FM 120, and the access roads into Preston Bend and Eisenhower State Park) are wide, well-paved, and free of the mountain grades that intimidate first-time renters. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, tanks, and the awning, plus their cell number for the trip. If you'd rather skip the drive entirely, filter for Delivery and have the RV waiting at your campsite. Pro tip: for your first time renting an RV, choose a Class C or travel trailer in the 22 to 28-foot range, big enough to be comfortable but small enough to park easily at Lake Texoma's lakeside sites.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws/sharing-the-road.htmlWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Lake Texoma trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you have a flat tire, a dead battery, or a mechanical issue on Highway 289 or near Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, one phone call dispatches help. Your host is also a built-in resource and usually just a text away to troubleshoot quirks like the water pump or generator. For anything bigger, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, that is the info dispatch will ask for first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Preston, TX RV rental into Oklahoma or across state lines?
Yes, and you'll want to. Lake Texoma straddles the Texas-Oklahoma border, so a quick drive across the Roosevelt Bridge on Highway 70 puts you at amazing Oklahoma-side campgrounds like Burns Run, Buncombe Creek, and Lake Texoma State Park near Kingston, all fully covered by your rental. Interstate travel throughout the US is standard with RVezy bookings, including popular routes from Preston to Broken Bow (about 200 miles east) and Beavers Bend State Park. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: message your host before booking if you're planning a multi-state loop, they can confirm mileage policy and share favorite stops along the way.
travelok.com/state-parks/lake-texoma-state-parkWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Preston, TX?
Budgeting fuel is easy here because distances around Lake Texoma are short. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 16 to 20 MPG for a Class B campervan rental in Preston, and for travel trailers, plan on a 3 to 5 MPG drop from your tow vehicle's normal numbers. Texas gas prices are typically among the lowest in the country, and you will find convenient fill-ups at the Murphy USA in Pottsboro and the Love's Travel Stop in Denison. Pro tip: top off in Pottsboro before heading onto the Preston Peninsula, prices at marina pumps near the lake can run noticeably higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground around Preston?
Sooner is better, especially for waterfront sites. US Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Preston Bend and Juniper Point on Lake Texoma book through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window, and the best peninsula sites for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends are often gone within minutes of opening. Eisenhower State Park reservations go through the Texas State Parks system up to 5 months in advance. For non-holiday weekends in spring and fall, 4 to 6 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then your campsite, that way you know your rig's length and can filter for sites that fit it.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233595What are driving conditions like around Preston and Lake Texoma?
Driving around Preston is refreshingly relaxed. Highway 289 north into the Preston Peninsula is a wide, two-lane road with gentle curves, and FM 120 connects you to Pottsboro and Denison without traffic headaches. Watch for sudden spring thunderstorms (March through May can bring strong crosswinds and heavy rain across Grayson County) and slow down on the Roosevelt Bridge crossing into Oklahoma when winds gust off the lake. Deer are active at dawn and dusk along Preston Road, so plan to be parked by sundown. Pro tip: avoid towing through downtown Dallas during weekday rush hour (3 to 7 PM); if you're picking up south of Preston, leave by mid-morning or after 7 PM for a smoother ride up US-75.
drivetexas.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Preston, TX?
Lake Texoma campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Preston Bend offers electric and water hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and a boat ramp on-site. Eisenhower State Park has full-hookup sites (water, electric, and sewer), plus a dump station, fish-cleaning shelter, and Eisenhower Yacht Club for snacks, ice, and bait. Cedar Mills Marina adds laundry and free Wi-Fi to the mix. For dumping and fresh water between stops, the Pottsboro Highport Marina area and Eisenhower State Park's public dump station both welcome day-use traffic for a small fee. Pro tip: many Corps sites have water and 30/50-amp electric but no sewer at the pad, so plan one mid-trip dump if you're staying longer than 4 nights.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/eisenhower/park_information/facilitiesWhat features and amenities come with a typical Preston, TX RV rental?
Modern RVs come well equipped. Most motorhome rentals in Preston include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, AC and heat, a dinette, and seatbelted travel seats. Many add a TV, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lighting, a backup camera, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays near Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge overlooks. Wi-Fi can be spotty out on the lake, so most travelers use a phone hotspot. Each RVezy listing shows exactly what is included with photos and a feature checklist. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6+' if you're bringing extended family for an RV camping Preston weekend, those rigs often include bunk beds the kids love.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Preston%2C%20TexasWhat popular add-ons can I get with my RV rental in Preston?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons for an RV rental on the Texas side of Lake Texoma include camping chairs and tables, outdoor grills, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, and even paddleboards or kayaks ready for Preston Bend's swim beach. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home base around Pottsboro, Sherman, or Denison, with delivery available for an extra per-mile fee. Mileage allowances vary by listing, and any extra-mile fee is shown upfront. Every add-on, mileage allowance, and fee is displayed on the listing before you book. Pro tip: ask the host to share local striper-guide contacts and a Texas fishing license link before your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Preston%2C%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, and always handled through the RVezy platform, never pay a host directly or by wire transfer. When you book your Preston, TX RV rental, your card is charged for the rental total, and the host places a refundable security deposit hold close to your trip start date. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, with the agreed tank and fuel levels, the hold is released after checkout. Pro tip: do a quick video walkthrough at pickup and dropoff and confirm fuel and propane levels in writing through the RVezy message thread, that simple habit keeps deposit returns fast and friction-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or overnight an RV near Preston, TX besides campgrounds?
You've got solid options beyond the campground. For an overnight pit stop, the Walmart Supercenter in Sherman (about 25 minutes south of Preston) traditionally allows free overnight RV parking with manager permission, and the Choctaw Casino in Durant, Oklahoma (about 30 minutes north) has a dedicated free RV lot for guests. Within Preston proper, overnight street parking isn't allowed, so plan to be at a campground, marina, or designated lot by evening. Cabela's in Allen and Buc-ee's in Denison also work for short rest breaks, though Buc-ee's prohibits overnight stays. Pro tip: for the best 'where to park an RV in Preston' experience, book Preston Bend or Highport Marina directly, you'll wake up to Lake Texoma sunrises that beat any parking lot.
