Campgrounds and RV parks near Rio Vista, TX

The Brazos River and Lake Whitney anchor most outdoor plans. Boating, largemouth bass and striped bass fishing, a designated swimming beach, and paddling are the main draws, and Lake Whitney State Park offers full-hookup, water-and-electric, and water-only sites along with a dump station for RV travelers. Cleburne State Park, Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, and the Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum give families half-day options within a short drive. Chalk Ridge Falls Park and the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center are popular with kids. In town and nearby, expect ranch-country drives, small-town cafes, feed-and-hardware stops, and easy trips into Cleburne, Granbury, and the Fort Worth Stockyards for a full day out.

North Central Texas has a long camping season. Most area campgrounds stay open year-round, and Lake Whitney State Park lists March through October as its busy season, with the same pattern generally holding across nearby RV parks. Spring is the strongest window. Wildflowers, mild temperatures, and full lake levels bring heavy weekend demand. Severe thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches are part of April and May, so travelers should track NWS Fort Worth alerts and pick sites with sturdy shade rather than large limbs overhead. Summer is hot, with afternoon highs typically in the low- to mid-90s, so lakefront and shaded sites fill up quickly on weekends. Fall brings cooler nights and lighter crowds outside holiday weekends. Winter stays mild most days with cold snaps possible, and many private parks quiet down considerably from December through February. A scheduled park hunt closes Lake Whitney State Park for a few days in December and January, so check TPWD alerts before booking those dates.

Private parks around Rio Vista are typically small, gravel-pad properties with full hookups, laundry, and a mix of long-term and short-term guests. Check-in is usually straightforward, and after-hours arrivals are generally accommodated with a posted site assignment. At Lake Whitney State Park, the entrance gate closes at 10pm to non-registered guests, and park headquarters keeps regular daytime office hours with expanded weekend hours beginning March 1. Walk-ins and reservation holders both use the self-pay station, with instructions on the lid, and payment must be completed before proceeding to an available site. Late arrivals must register at the headquarters by 9am the next morning. Johnson County and Hill County are both under a Texas Department of Agriculture quarantine to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer, which restricts the movement of firewood and ash wood, so buy firewood where you plan to burn it.
