Camping near Silverton, Texas
Silverton sits in Briscoe County in the Texas Panhandle, roughly 17 miles northwest of Quitaque and the main entrance to Caprock Canyons State Park, located near Quitaque. The town is small and quiet, with basic services and a handful of RV-friendly options, and it functions primarily as a base for exploring the red-rock canyon country to the southeast. Elevation is close to 3,300 feet, so nights run cooler than the flat plains around Lubbock and Amarillo.
Campground choices in the area lean toward independent RV parks and ranch-style stays rather than large resorts. Pole Canyon Ranch and Windmill Ranch RV Park & Cabins sit on rural acreage suited to bigger rigs, while Big C RV Park and Hotel Turkey RV Park work well as short overnight stops for travelers routing between Colorado and central Texas. The Wild Horse Equestrian area inside Caprock Canyons State Park is the closest state-park option and welcomes RVs and horse trailers.
Expect wide skies, low light pollution, and long distances between fuel stops. Caprock Canyons is located about two hours from Amarillo and one hour and 45 minutes from Lubbock, the nearest cities for full-service groceries and repairs.
Things to do around Silverton
Caprock Canyons State Park is the main draw. The park consists of approximately 15,300 acres in Briscoe County, making it the third largest state park in Texas, and it is home to the Official Texas State Bison Herd, which roams freely across the park. Families come for short walks near the visitor center, wildlife viewing at the Honey Flat prairie dog town, and easy drives with canyon overlooks.
Active travelers have 90 miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, including 26 miles in the park proper and another 64 miles on the Trailways System, a rails-to-trails project. Lake Theo inside the park offers fishing and a swim beach. In nearby Turkey, the Bob Wills Museum recalls the life of the Western Swing musician, a low-key stop between hikes.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping around Silverton. Daytime highs run mild, wildflowers appear in April and May, and cooler nights make canyon hikes easier. Spring weekends fill quickly at Caprock Canyons, so bookings should be secured well in advance. Late-spring thunderstorms can bring hail and strong winds; the Panhandle is part of Tornado Alley and severe-weather awareness is essential.
Summer is hot and largely dry, with afternoon highs in the upper 80s and low 90s. Shade is limited on canyon trails, so hikes are best done at sunrise or in the evening. Thunderstorms most often arrive from June through August and can wash out unpaved back roads outside the state park.
Fall brings clearer skies, lower humidity, and prime hiking weather. Winter is short but can turn very cold and windy, with short, very cold, snowy, windy winters typical of the Panhandle. The state park schedules public hunt dates in fall and winter that briefly close portions of the park, so check current dates before booking.
How to book a campsite
Sites inside Caprock Canyons State Park are reserved through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Overnight reservations can be made up to five months in advance, and day passes can be reserved up to 30 days in advance. Booking online at the TPWD reservation site is fastest, though the customer service line at (512) 389-8900, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. handles group and complex bookings. A separate day pass is generally not required for registered overnight guests.
Private parks near Silverton are booked directly with the operator. Pole Canyon Ranch, Big C RV Park, Hotel Turkey RV Park, and Windmill Ranch RV Park & Cabins each take direct reservations by phone or through third-party listing sites. For holiday weekends and spring wildflower season, reserving six to eight weeks out is prudent.
What to expect on arrival
The nearest full-service town is Quitaque, three miles from the park, with gas, restaurants including Bison Cafe, and basic supplies. Silverton itself has limited services, so groceries, propane, and RV supplies are best sourced in Tulia, Plainview, or Amarillo before arrival. Cell coverage is uneven in the canyons and along back roads.
Inside the state park, roads are paved, but unpaved county roads outside can become slick after heavy rain. As a rule, bison require at least 50 yards between them and people, so give the herd a wide berth on trails and near campgrounds. Travelers with infants or specific health concerns may prefer to bring bottled water.
Shade is scarce on the canyon floor. Plan for strong sun, bring more water than usual, and secure awnings against sudden Panhandle wind gusts.
