Campgrounds and RV parks near Spearman, TX

Lake Palo Duro, managed by the Palo Duro Water District, is the primary outdoor draw. The 2,413-acre reservoir sits about 10 miles north of Spearman on Palo Duro Creek, a tributary of the North Canadian River, and offers fishing, boating, swimming, and lakeside camping. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists two RV campgrounds with hookups at the lake, along with several picnic and camping areas and multiple boat ramps. Wildlife viewing in the surrounding rangeland is straightforward, with mule deer, pronghorn, and waterfowl common in season. Day trips reach farther afield: Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon has more than 30 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, and Lake Meredith National Recreation Area sits within roughly an hour and a half by road.

Spring runs from March through May and offers the most temperate weather, though it is also the region's severe-weather season. Thunderstorms, hail, and tornado watches are common from April into June. RV travelers should monitor NWS Amarillo forecasts and choose parks with sturdy hookups and, ideally, nearby shelter. Summer is hot and generally dry, with July highs typically in the low 90s Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms possible. August is usually the wettest month. The reservoir area is prone to drought and low water conditions, and burn bans are frequently in effect across Hansford and neighboring counties during summer and early fall. Call the Palo Duro Water District before a lake trip to confirm ramp access. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and generally the most stable camping weather. Winter is cold and windy with occasional snow and ice storms. Most private RV parks in town stay open year-round, but expect frozen hookups during cold snaps and confirm winter water service before booking.

Spearman is a small agricultural and energy town, and RV parks here reflect that: clean, level, hookup-focused, without resort amenities. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers in and around town but can drop off quickly on ranch roads and near the lake. Wind is a defining feature of the Panhandle. Plan for sustained daytime winds, secure awnings before leaving the site, and expect dust on gravel pads. Shade is limited at most sites, so window covers and roof vent fans help during summer. Groceries, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies are available in Spearman and nearby Perryton. For larger repairs, dealerships and parts are concentrated in Amarillo. Dump stations are available at lake campgrounds and most private parks.
