Campgrounds and RV parks near Sudan, TX

Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1935 and located in the High Plains of west Texas, is best known for hosting one of the largest concentrations of lesser sandhill cranes in North America. The 6,440-acre refuge includes three saline lakes, Paul's, White, and Goose, and offers wildlife watching, photography, hiking, and camping. Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge lies farther north near Umbarger. The namesake lake is typically dry and only receives water during major storms, but the 7,664-acre refuge encompasses short grass prairie, riparian, and woodland habitats where visitors can enjoy wildlife watching, photography, and hiking along an auto tour road. Lubbock, about an hour east, adds the National Ranching Heritage Center, the Buddy Holly Center, Texas Tech University, and Buffalo Springs Lake for swimming, fishing, and paddling.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel on the South Plains. Daytime highs are mild, wildflowers appear across the prairie, and migratory bird activity picks up at the regional refuges. Spring and fall migrations bring warblers, flycatchers, and sparrows through Buffalo Lake, while shorebirds and waterfowl move through Muleshoe. Summer brings hot afternoons, strong sun, and a real thunderstorm and severe-weather season. The regional climate is continental semi-arid, with very hot and sunny summers, and rains occur mainly as afternoon and evening thunderstorms, sometimes accompanied by hail, in late spring and summer. Travelers should plan for wind and monitor storm outlooks, since tornadoes can develop from April to June. Winter is the driest season and is the peak time for sandhill cranes at Muleshoe. Cranes begin arriving in late September, with numbers peaking between December and mid-February. Freezing nights are common, so RVers should be prepared to protect hoses and tanks.

Most private parks near Sudan are set up for practical overnight and extended stays rather than resort amenities. Expect level pull-through sites, 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, Wi-Fi of variable quality, and easy highway access. Shade is limited across the South Plains, so awnings, sun shades, and generator-friendly cooling matter in summer. Refuge camping is a different experience. Primitive camping is available near the refuge headquarters at Muleshoe, with picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms but no potable water. Sites are basic, cell coverage can be spotty, and visitors should arrive self-contained with water and waste capacity. Wind is a constant factor on the plains. Secure awnings, watch for blowing dust in dry stretches, and plan travel days around forecast gusts and any severe-weather watches issued by the Lubbock National Weather Service office.
