Camping near Sunrise Shores, Texas
Sunrise Shores is a small lakeside community on the western shore of Lake Palestine, a freshwater reservoir in northeast Texas created for industrial, municipal, and recreational purposes. The area sits within the Piney Woods region between Tyler and Palestine, giving RV travelers quick access to shoreline campgrounds, marinas, and boat ramps.
Most sites in the immediate area are private RV parks and lakeside resorts rather than state or federal campgrounds. Flat Creek Marina and RV Camping, Lake Palestine Resort, and Big Steves Resort RV Park and Marina cluster along the lake itself, while The Old Homeplace RV Village and Trails End RV Camp offer inland options a short drive away.
Lake Palestine covers roughly 25,560 acres with about 135 miles of shoreline, so fishing, boating, and swimming drive most of the local camping demand. Tyler, roughly 15 miles northeast with full-service groceries, hospitals, and hardware stores, functions as the practical resupply point for longer RV stays.
Things to do around Lake Palestine
Lake Palestine is the primary draw. Boating, largemouth bass and crappie fishing, tubing, and swimming are the main summer activities, with public ramps and private marinas including Flat Creek Marina and RV Camping and Big Steves Resort RV Park and Marina providing water access. Kayaking is easiest in the quieter coves on the western shore.
Off the water, the Texas State Railroad runs excursion trains between Palestine and Rusk through the Piney Woods and is a reliable option for families. Tyler State Park, about 30 miles north, adds hiking, a spring-fed lake, and shaded trails.
The city of Tyler offers the Caldwell Zoo, the Tyler Rose Garden, and standard chain shopping and dining. Palestine's historic downtown and the Davey Dogwood Park bloom trail are additional easy day trips from any base near Sunrise Shores.

East Texas has a long warm season. Summers are hot and humid, winters are short and mild with wet spells, and the area is partly cloudy year round. Peak average temperatures arrive in August, with highs near 95°F and overnight lows around 74°F, so shaded, hookup-equipped sites fill quickly from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. From mid-March through mid-April and again from mid-October through mid-November, daytime temperatures generally sit in the 70s and low 80s. Spring brings dogwood and wildflower bloom, along with the region's peak thunderstorm and tornado risk. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong bass fishing.
Winter is mild but variable. January is the coldest month, with average highs near 55°F and lows around 39°F, and hard freezes are typically brief. Many private lake parks stay open year round, though pool and marina services often scale back between November and March.

Booking and reservations
Most campgrounds around Sunrise Shores are privately operated, so reservations go directly through each park by phone or its own website rather than through Recreation.gov. Waterfront sites at Flat Creek Marina and RV Camping, Lake Palestine Resort, and Big Steves Resort RV Park and Marina are the first to book, so four to eight weeks ahead is a safe target for summer weekends and holiday periods.
Monthly and seasonal rates are common at The Old Homeplace RV Village and Trails End RV Camp, which draw longer-stay guests. Ask about big-rig length limits, 50-amp availability, and sewer hookups when booking.
Texas state parks in the region, including Tyler State Park, use the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system with a five-month rolling window that opens at 8:00 a.m. Central. A Texas State Parks Pass waives day-use entry fees at state sites.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the Sunrise Shores area are paved but narrow in places, with tight turns on some shoreline access lanes. Larger Class A coaches should confirm approach routes with the campground before arrival. Cell coverage on the western shore is generally solid on major carriers.
Sites vary from open, sunny gravel pads to shaded pine and hardwood settings. Expect mosquitoes and chiggers from late spring through early fall, and pack for high humidity even on cooler days. Fire ants are common, so check pads before setting out mats or hoses.
Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Bullard, Chandler, and Tyler. Boat launches, fish-cleaning stations, and dump stations are standard at the lakeside parks, while inland parks like The Old Homeplace RV Village lean toward quieter, full-hookup stays without water access.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sunrise%20Shores%2C%20TexasWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Sunrise Shores?
Good news: your regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sunrise Shores for personal use, no commercial driver's license (CDL) required. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) exempts recreational vehicle drivers from CDL rules, and the vast majority of motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy fall well under the 26,000-pound threshold that would trigger a special non-commercial Class A or B license. You'll need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set to roll out toward Lake Palestine.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesIs my RV rental in Sunrise Shores protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Sunrise Shores booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull onto FM 850 or Highway 155 with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can select the tier that fits your comfort zone. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers before you book so you know exactly what is included before you ever turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Sunrise Shores RV trip?
You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a grace period right after you reserve, so if plans change quickly you have room to adjust. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how close you are to your trip start date. You will see the exact terms applied to your trip during checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: message the host before booking with any timing questions, then reserve with confidence knowing RVezy support has your back.

Yes, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Sunrise Shores welcome your four-legged crew. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are warmly invited. Lake Palestine is a dream for dogs, with shaded shorelines and quiet coves near Coffee City where they can splash and sniff to their heart's content. Many local RV parks around the lake allow leashed pets too. Pro tip: pack a long lead, a collapsible water bowl, and a towel, because every lab in Henderson County seems to find the lake within five minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sunrise%20Shores%2C%20Texas&Features=PetFriendlyCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Sunrise Shores?
Yes, RV delivery in Sunrise Shores is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are new to towing or driving a big rig. Many RVezy hosts in the Tyler, Athens, and Chandler area will deliver the RV directly to your campsite, then set up the awning, hookups, and slide-outs and walk you through everything before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when searching. Delivery fees typically run on a per-mile basis from the host's location. Pro tip: book delivery to a full-hookup site so you can spend day one swimming instead of leveling.

For a state park experience, Tyler State Park sits about 45 minutes north with Civilian Conservation Corps history and a spring-fed lake. Summer brings hot, humid days in the mid 90s, perfect if you plan to live in the lake. Winter is mild (40s to 60s by day, occasional dips into the 30s at night) and locals know it is a great time for bass and crappie fishing on Lake Palestine. Pro tip: come the first weekend of any month for First Monday Trade Days in nearby Canton, one of the largest flea markets in the country.
weather.gov/fwd/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be more than okay. First time renting an RV is a really common starting point on RVezy, and Sunrise Shores is an ideal training-wheels location. Roads around Lake Palestine are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked compared to Dallas or Houston, so the learning curve is gentle. Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup covering hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, and dumping basics, and you can message them mid-trip with questions. Travel trailers and Class C motorhomes are the most beginner-friendly choices. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick walkthrough video so you can review hooking up at the campground before your first night under the East Texas pines.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106474-What-to-expect-at-pickupWhat if my RV breaks down during my Sunrise Shores trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on FM 315, a dead battery at the Coffee City boat ramp, or a propane question at 11 p.m., help is one phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, lockout help, fuel delivery, and towing across Henderson, Smith, and Anderson counties. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and the address where you are parked when you set up camp, so any service call goes faster if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039025454-Roadside-assistanceCan I take a Sunrise Shores RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-country adventures are absolutely on the table from Sunrise Shores. You can drive your RV freely throughout the United States, with popular routes including Hot Springs, Arkansas (about 4.5 hours northeast), New Orleans, Louisiana (about 6 hours east), and the Gulf Coast at Galveston (about 4 hours south). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Pro tip: message the host through the listing before booking if you are planning to cross state lines, so everyone is aligned on mileage and route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Sunrise Shores RV road trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable here. Class C motorhomes around Sunrise Shores average about 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans hit 18 to 22 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG when loaded). Texas gas prices tend to run below the national average, and you'll find affordable stations in Coffee City, Chandler, and along Highway 155. For a 3-night Lake Palestine loop covering 200 miles, plan on roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in Athens or Tyler rather than tiny lake-side stations, where prices can spike 20 to 40 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sunrise Shores?
For the best sites, book early. Tyler State Park opens reservations 5 months out through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and lakefront RV sites there can sell out within hours for summer weekends and holiday weeks. Private parks like JB's RV Resort, Lake Palestine Resort, and Lake Palestine Gateway RV Park typically take reservations 3 to 6 months ahead, with peak weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) filling first. For midweek spring or fall trips, 2 to 4 weeks out is usually plenty. Pro tip: if Tyler State Park is fully booked, check back early in the morning when cancellations are released, you can often grab a same-day spot.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/tyler/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Sunrise Shores?
Driving conditions around Sunrise Shores are some of the friendliest in Texas for RV beginners. The area is rural, flat to gently rolling, and built around two-lane country roads like FM 850, FM 315, and State Highway 155 toward Coffee City and Chandler, with minimal traffic outside summer weekends. Watch for occasional log trucks, deer at dawn and dusk, and afternoon thunderstorms in spring that can pop up fast over Lake Palestine. Bridges and overpasses along Highway 155 and Loop 323 in Tyler stay well above 13'6" clearance, so most RVs pass easily. Pro tip: avoid pulling into Tyler during Friday rush hour (4 to 6 p.m.) on Loop 323 if you're towing, and stick to morning departures for the smoothest ride.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Sunrise Shores?
Most campgrounds near Sunrise Shores offer the works: full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, hot showers, and laundry. JB's RV Resort has 60 full-hookup sites with 20/30/50-amp service and free Wi-Fi, Lake Palestine Gateway RV Park offers 41 full-hookup sites with direct Neches River access, and Tyler State Park provides water-only and full-hookup options with bathhouses. Dump stations are easy to find at most private parks and at Tyler State Park if you're staying somewhere more rustic. Potable water fills are standard at every park entrance. Pro tip: ask your host whether the RV's freshwater hose and sewer hose are included, almost all are, but confirming saves a Walmart run on day one.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/tyler/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Sunrise Shores?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Sunrise Shores comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa sleepers (most sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many include a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and an awning for shaded lake afternoons. Travel trailers offer the same interior comforts minus the drivable cab. Wi-Fi varies, so check the listing. Pro tip: cell signal around Lake Palestine is solid for Verizon and AT&T but spottier in coves, so download Netflix shows and offline maps before you leave Tyler.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons can I get with my Sunrise Shores RV rental?
Hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your campervan rental in Sunrise Shores or motorhome rental in Sunrise Shores experience. Pickup is usually at the host's location, and one-way trips may be possible by direct message. Pro tip: bundle add-ons with delivery to skip the trip to the host's driveway and start your Lake Palestine RV trip right at the campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106494-What-is-RV-deliveryHow does the security deposit and payment work for a Sunrise Shores RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Sunrise Shores, RVezy processes your payment through the platform, no cash or off-platform transfers needed. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts and released back to you after a clean return with no damage. Pro tip: do a video walk-around with your host at both pickup and drop-off, those two minutes of footage are the easiest way to ensure your full deposit comes back fast.
