Campgrounds and RV parks near Tolar, TX

Tolar sits in Hood County in North Central Texas, roughly 15 minutes west of Granbury and about an hour southwest of Fort Worth. The area draws RV travelers with a mix of small-town Texas character, Lake Granbury access, and the fossil trackways at nearby Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose. Campground options within a short drive include Dinosaur Valley State Park, a 1,524-acre state park astride the Paluxy River in Somervell County known for well-preserved theropod and sauropod footprints, plus private RV parks such as Granbury RV Resort, Thorp Spring RV Park, Bennett's RV Ranch, and Hill City Horse Stop for travelers bringing horses. Private parks lean toward full hookups and paved pads, while state park sites focus on natural surroundings. Most travelers use Tolar as a quiet base for day trips into Granbury's historic square, Lake Granbury, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, and the dinosaur tracks in Glen Rose, the "Dinosaur Capital of Texas". Grocery, fuel, and services are easier to find in Granbury or Glen Rose than in Tolar itself.

For Dinosaur Valley State Park, reservations run through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park's 61 campsites can be reserved in advance via the Texas State Parks website, with sites opening five months in advance, or 12 months in advance for the two group sites. Group site availability can be checked and reservations made by calling (512) 389-8920. Book state park sites as soon as the window opens for spring and fall weekends. Sites fill quickly during peak months, so early booking online or by phone is the reliable path, not last-minute walk-ups. Private parks near Tolar and Granbury, including Granbury RV Resort, Thorp Spring RV Park, Bennett's RV Ranch, and Hill City Horse Stop, take reservations directly by phone or their own websites. Confirm rig length, hookup amps, and pet policies before booking.
