Campgrounds and RV parks near Tulia, TX

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the main draw. The park has more than 30 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus scenic overlooks reachable by car or RV. Popular routes include the Lighthouse Trail to the park's signature rock formation, and the CCC and Triassic Trails near the rim. From June through mid-August, the Pioneer Amphitheater near the Sagebrush camping area hosts the TEXAS Outdoor Musical, an evening show about early settlers of the region. The Old West Stables inside the canyon offer guided rides through Timber Creek Canyon. Riders bringing their own horses can stable at the park's equestrian campground; a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months is required, and papers must be presented at the entrance gate. Amarillo, about 46 miles north, adds the Amarillo Zoo, Don Harrington Discovery Center, and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is open year round, but conditions vary sharply by season. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather for hiking and camping. April and May are among the wettest months in the region and can produce severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes; flash flooding inside the canyon is a serious hazard after heavy rain. Summers are hot. Temperatures on the canyon floor typically run 5 to 10 degrees hotter than on the rim, and when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory the park closes the Lighthouse, Comanche, Givens-Spicer-Lowry, and Rock Garden trails from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summer is also peak season for the TEXAS Outdoor Musical, and campsites book heavily on weekends and holidays. Winters are short but cold, with overnight lows commonly below freezing and occasional Arctic blasts that bring snow. Portions of the park close for scheduled hunt dates and equestrian trail maintenance in December and January, so verify site availability before booking.

At Palo Duro Canyon State Park, all campers must check in at Park Headquarters before occupying a site. The office is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the entrance gate operates from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Arrivals after 5:30 p.m. with a reservation booked before 4 p.m. can find a permit envelope in the yellow mailbox at the Headquarters building. Some sites in the Mesquite, Sagebrush, and Hackberry loops accommodate RVs up to 60 feet. The Fortress Cliff area is tent-only, and pop-up campers, travel trailers, and motorhomes are not allowed there. Burn bans are common in dry conditions; when in effect, wood and charcoal fires are prohibited, but containerized fuel stoves with a shut-off valve are permitted for cooking. Carry ample water: park guidance suggests one liter per person per mile when hiking.
