Guadalupe Mountains National Park is the primary draw. Day hikes range from short interpretive walks near the visitor center to the strenuous round trip up Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas. Hikes to Guadalupe Peak or the Bowl are strenuous, 8-9 miles, and have 2500-3000 feet of elevation gain. McKittrick Canyon, known for its bigtooth maples, is a popular fall-color destination. Summer is hot in Van Horn itself, with afternoon highs regularly in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and July through September carrying the region's monsoon rains. Thunderstorms build quickly over the Guadalupe range, and flash flooding can close backcountry trails. Higher-elevation sites at Pine Springs stay several degrees cooler than the desert floor. Winter is short but genuinely cold at elevation. Overnight lows in town drop to around freezing on average, and high winds with over 50 mph gusts are common, especially during winter and spring. Water at some campground spigots may be shut off during hard freezes, so travelers should confirm hookup status before arrival.

Van Horn is a small desert town with limited services after dark. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available along the I-10 business loop, but travelers heading into Guadalupe Mountains National Park should top off in town first. At Pine Springs there are no hook-ups, dump stations, or showers, and there are no fuel stations inside the park. Cell coverage is inconsistent. Cell phone service is limited at the visitor center and in the campground areas, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town is a practical habit. Winds are a defining feature of the region. Sustained gusts across the flats between Van Horn and the Guadalupe escarpment can affect high-profile RVs, particularly in spring. Awnings should be stowed when sites are unattended, and travel plans should build in flexibility for wind advisories.
