Campgrounds near Wells, Texas
Wells sits in Cherokee County in the East Texas Piney Woods, along US Highway 69 between Lufkin and Rusk. The town is small, but its location puts RV travelers within a short drive of pine and hardwood forest, Sam Rayburn Reservoir to the southeast, and Davy Crockett National Forest to the west. Most travelers use Wells as a base for fishing, forest hiking, and historic sites tied to the old El Camino Real de los Tejas.
Campground options near Wells range from small private RV parks to a state park with electric sites. Southern Pines RV Campground and 69 RV Park are the closest options along the US 69 corridor, and Fairway RV Park adds another private choice within easy reach. Lufkin KOA Journey, roughly 20 minutes south, offers a full-service RV park with pull-through pads and standard KOA amenities.
Mission Tejas State Park, about 30 minutes west near Grapeland, provides the closest public land camping with hookups, hiking trails, and a small fishing pond.
Things to do near Wells
Mission Tejas State Park anchors most day trips. The park features a commemorative log mission built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and a walkable segment of the historic El Camino Real de los Tejas. About 8.5 miles of trails wind through tall pine forest and dogwood, and San Pedro Creek and a small pond are open to fishing.
Sam Rayburn Reservoir, about 30 to 45 minutes southeast, is the largest lake entirely within Texas and draws bass anglers, boaters, and tournament crowds. Angelina National Forest surrounds much of the reservoir and includes swimming at Boykin Springs and the Sawmill Hiking Trail out to the Aldridge Sawmill ruins.
In Lufkin, families can visit the Ellen Trout Zoo, the Texas Forestry Museum, and the Museum of East Texas.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of East Texas. March through May brings warm days, blooming dogwood along forest trails around the last week of March, and active bird migration through the pineywoods. May is typically the wettest month, so expect thunderstorms and check road conditions before heading into dispersed forest areas.
Summer is hot and humid. Daily highs regularly push into the mid 90s with high dew points, and afternoon storms are common. Water-based activity at Sam Rayburn Reservoir and the spring-fed swim area at Boykin Springs helps, but shaded sites are worth the extra planning. Insect pressure is high from late spring through early fall.
Fall cools gradually after early October and delivers the most stable, comfortable camping weather. Winter is short and generally mild, with occasional cold snaps and very rare light snow. Most private parks and Mission Tejas State Park stay open year-round.
Booking and reservations
Mission Tejas State Park is reserved through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department system. Developed campsites can be booked online or by calling the state parks customer service center, with a five-month booking window. Five hike-in primitive sites are also reservable through the park. The park often reaches capacity on weekends, and TPWD recommends reserving both camping and day-use passes ahead.
Lufkin KOA Journey books directly through the KOA website or KOA app, with cancellation terms shown at checkout. Southern Pines RV Campground, 69 RV Park, and Fairway RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For holiday weekends and any dates overlapping bass tournaments on Sam Rayburn, book several weeks out.
What to expect on site
Private parks along the US 69 corridor lean toward pull-through RV sites with full hookups, gravel or concrete pads, and basic laundry and bathhouse facilities. Lufkin KOA Journey has 30 and 50 amp service, long pull-throughs that can accommodate big rigs, a seasonal pool, a stocked fishing pond, Wi-Fi, and tent sites with water and electric.
Mission Tejas State Park offers 15 shaded back-in electric sites with picnic tables, lantern poles, waist-high grills, and water at the site. Sites 1 through 6 are 30 amp, and sites 7 through 15 are 30/50 amp. Hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station are available. There is no swimming at the park itself, but Ratcliff Lake in the Davy Crockett National Forest is about 12 miles away.
Cell coverage varies and can drop out in remote forest sections.

No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans on the RVezy platform. Approved drivers are generally 25 years or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking platform, so the process is quick and fully online. Visiting from overseas? Because Wells occasionally sees tropical weather drifting up from the Gulf, it is smart to keep an eye on forecasts in late summer.

October and November bring crisp mornings in the 50s and warm afternoons in the 70s, ideal for hiking the Four C National Recreation Trail. Summers (June through August) are hot and humid with highs in the mid-90s, so you will want strong air conditioning and shaded sites. Mild winters (40s to 60s) make a Wells RV trip a year-round option. Local insider tip: late March is dogwood peak bloom.
weather.gov/shv/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I be okay driving around Wells, TX?

Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dump procedures so nothing feels like a mystery. You can also message the host any time during your trip with questions. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer under 25 feet for your first booking, and choose a host who offers delivery to take driving stress off the table entirely.

RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need anything beyond mechanical help. Most hosts in the Wells and Lufkin area are responsive by message too. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, since cell service can be spotty inside the Davy Crockett National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Wells, TX?
You are perfectly positioned for an East Texas RV road trip from Wells. Top routes include the Davy Crockett National Forest loop (about 30 miles southwest to Ratcliff Lake, then over to Mission Tejas State Park), a Caddo Lake adventure (about 130 miles northeast for cypress-lined bayous and kayaking), Galveston Island beaches (roughly 200 miles south for Gulf Coast camping), Big Thicket National Preserve (about 90 miles southeast), and a Texas Hill Country swing through Austin (about 220 miles southwest). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but the entire US is open. Pro tip: Caddo Lake at sunrise with morning mist is a bucket-list East Texas moment.
nps.gov/bith/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Wells, TX RV trip?
East Texas is friendly to your fuel budget. Gas prices in Cherokee and Angelina counties typically run near or a bit below the Texas state average, with stations in Lufkin and Nacogdoches usually the most competitive nearby. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 16 to 20 MPG for a campervan or a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. For a typical 3-night Wells RV trip covering 250 miles, budget around $90 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Lufkin on US 69 before heading into the Davy Crockett National Forest, as small towns nearby have limited stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Wells, TX?
Plan ahead and you will get the prime spots. Texas state parks like Mission Tejas open reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and popular weekends (spring break, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and the late-March dogwood bloom) sell out fast. Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area inside the Davy Crockett National Forest books through Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead. For a summer or holiday weekend, aim to reserve 3 to 4 months out; for a quiet midweek trip in October, even 1 to 2 weeks is often fine. Pro tip: ask your RVezy host to confirm your rig's length fits the campsite, since some Mission Tejas sites have length limits.
texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Wells, TX?
Driving is refreshingly easy here. Wells sits along US Highway 69 in rural Cherokee County, with light traffic, flat-to-rolling terrain, and wide shoulders that are friendly to first-time RV drivers. Watch for occasional logging trucks on US 69 (this is timber country), white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, and the rare afternoon thunderstorm in spring and summer that can drop heavy rain quickly. Hurricane season (June to November) occasionally brings remnants of Gulf systems inland, so check the forecast before you roll. Local insider tip: if you are heading to Ratcliff Lake, take TX-7 west from Lufkin rather than smaller county roads, as it is well-paved and easy for big rigs.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Wells, TX?

Private RV parks around Lufkin typically offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers also include a TV, a generator or shore power capability, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi varies by host, and cell signal can be limited inside the Davy Crockett National Forest, so download maps and entertainment ahead of time. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wells,TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Wells, TX?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, so you never need to hand cash or a check to your host. You will pay your rental total securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is held separately before the trip starts (the exact amount is shown during checkout and varies by RV value). After drop-off, once the host confirms everything is in good shape, the deposit is released back to you, typically within a few business days. To avoid any issues: do a photo walkaround at pickup and drop-off, follow the mileage and generator policy, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels you started with.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle the East Texas summer heat in an RV near Wells?
With a little planning, summer in Wells is very manageable. Daytime highs from June through August often reach the mid-90s with high humidity, so book an RV with a strong roof-mount air conditioner and request a shaded, 50 amp site at places like Ratcliff Lake or a private Lufkin RV park to keep the AC running efficiently. Drive in the cooler morning hours, hydrate constantly, and plan midday breaks at the swim beach at Ratcliff Lake. Local insider tip: shoulder seasons (April, May, October) are the smart-money move, with milder weather, lower campground demand, and the same gorgeous piney-woods scenery.
