Campgrounds near Wortham, Texas
Wortham sits in Freestone County in east-central Texas, roughly midway between Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston along the I-45 corridor. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Fort Parker State Park to the west near Mexia and to Richland Chambers Reservoir to the north, one of the largest lakes in Texas. Fort Parker sits about 90 miles south of the DFW Metroplex and is reached via State Highway 14, which runs north from Interstate 45.
Options within a short drive range from full-hookup private parks to state-park sites on the lake. Sandy Springs RV Park and Pull Through RV Park serve travelers looking for straightforward hookups close to town, while The Grove at Fort Parker and Apollo Lodge & RV Park cater to visitors focused on the state park and surrounding recreation. Midway Landing puts RVers near Richland Chambers Reservoir for boaters and anglers.
Fort Parker State Park covers roughly 1,459 acres in Limestone County near Mexia. Anglers can drop a hook in 750-acre Fort Parker Lake, three-acre Lake Springfield, or the Navasota River.
Things to do near Wortham
Water recreation drives most trips. Paddlers can take Fort Parker Lake and the Navasota River by canoe or kayak, including the 5.3-mile Limestone Bluffs Paddling Trail, and rentals are available at the park. Fishing turns up channel and blue catfish, white and black bass, and crappie, and no license is required to fish from shore in a Texas state park. Richland Chambers Reservoir, reachable from Midway Landing and Sandy Springs RV Park, adds room for open-water boating and striped bass.
On land, seven miles of trails open to hikers and bikers wind through the park. The 0.6-mile Bur Oak Trail focuses on native plants, while the two-mile Springfield Trail passes the Springfield Cemetery, the Navasota River springs, and the CCC-built dam.
History stops include Old Fort Parker and the Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site, five miles northwest of the park.

Seasonal patterns near Wortham

March - May

June - August
93° / 73°F 75 mmHot; swim demand peaks, no lifeguard on duty

September - November
79° / 57°F 110 mmSecond rain peak; cooler nights, prime camping

December - February
59° / 37°F 68 mmCool and drier; quiet weekdays at Fort Parker
The area runs on a Texas humid-subtropical calendar. The January average low is around 34 degrees and the July average high is near 95 degrees, with May and September typically the wettest months. First freeze usually occurs in late November and the last freeze in mid-March, so shoulder-season campers should plan for occasional cold snaps.
Spring and fall are the busiest and most comfortable stretches for RV travel. Milder temperatures and lower humidity make these seasons ideal for hiking, paddling, and lakeside camping, and weekdays tend to be noticeably quieter than weekends around holidays.
Summer is hot and thunderstorm-prone, with afternoon highs regularly in the mid-90s. Swimming is popular because water temperatures are warm, but Fort Parker has no lifeguard and guests swim at their own risk. Fall brings a second rain peak and cooler nights, and the drop in humidity suits longer trail days and open-water fishing.
How to book campsites
State-park sites at Fort Parker are handled through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Most overnight camping and lodging reservations can be booked up to five months in advance, with the window opening at 8 a.m. Central on a rolling daily basis. Booking early is wise for weekends, spring break, and fall foliage weeks.
Day passes can be reserved up to one month ahead, and the park recommends reserving both a campsite and a day-use permit to guarantee entry when capacity is reached. Cabins, screened shelters, and group facilities must be booked in advance and are not available on a walk-up basis.
Private parks near Wortham, including Sandy Springs RV Park, Pull Through RV Park, Apollo Lodge & RV Park, and Midway Landing, book directly with the operator by phone or through the park's own website.
What to expect on arrival
At Fort Parker, expect a small, lake-oriented campground rather than a large resort. The main loop offers roughly two dozen RV sites near the Recreation Hall; four are pull-through and the rest are back-in, with a picnic table, fire ring or grill, water hookups, and 30-amp electrical service at each site. The loop at the top of the campground is a tight turn, and any rig over 30 feet will find it challenging; travelers towing a trailer or second vehicle should unhitch before making the turn. A dump station is available near the cemetery.
Park office hours run Monday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and overnight campers arriving after 4:30 p.m. should call park headquarters before 4 p.m. on the day of arrival. Cell service is variable in the wooded lake areas, so download maps in advance. Pets are welcome on a six-foot leash but are restricted from screened shelters, cabins, and park buildings.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wortham,%20TexasHow much will I spend on fuel for a motorhome rental in Wortham?
Fuel is one of the most predictable trip costs, and Texas gas prices are typically among the lowest in the country, which helps your budget stretch further. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans (Class B) come in around 14 to 20 MPG, and a truck-plus-travel-trailer combo lands near 9 to 13 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Wortham to Waco and back, expect roughly $75 to $115 in fuel for a Class C at current Texas prices. Pro tip: fill up in Corsicana or Fairfield off I-45 where station prices are usually a few cents cheaper than the rural stops along US-84.

Booking ahead is the biggest single thing you can do to guarantee a great trip. Texas State Parks accept reservations up to five months in advance through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and spring weekends fill fast. Private parks like Sandy Springs RV Park, Castaway RV Park, and Cedar Grove RV Park usually have more last-minute availability and accept reservations 2 to 4 weeks ahead with no issue. Insider tip: weekday Sunday-through-Thursday stays at the best campgrounds near Wortham are often wide open and noticeably quieter, perfect if you want lakefront serenity.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/about/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Wortham?
Driving here is genuinely relaxed, which is great news if you are nervous about handling a larger rig. I-45 a few miles east is the main artery between Dallas and Houston and is wide and well-maintained. Watch for sudden spring thunderstorms, occasional crosswinds on open prairie stretches, and white-tailed deer near dawn and dusk on rural roads. Avoid driving during severe weather watches. The biggest hazard on a Wortham RV trip is usually just sun glare in the late afternoon, so pack good sunglasses.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wortham,%20TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected and your booking confirmed. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is held separately from the booking payment before the trip starts, and it is released after a clean return with no issues. To avoid any deposit hiccups: do a careful walkthrough with the host at pickup, take photos of any existing dings, return the RV with fuel and tanks per the host's instructions, and clean up before drop-off. Easy, transparent, and renter-friendly.
