Camping near Aurora, Utah
Aurora sits in Sevier County along I-70 in central Utah, a short drive from Richfield and within easy reach of Fishlake National Forest, Fremont Indian State Park, and the Paiute ATV Trail system. The area suits RV travelers using Aurora as a base between Utah's Mighty Five national parks, with Capitol Reef roughly an hour east and Bryce Canyon under two hours south.
Closest to town, Richfield KOA Holiday and Venture RV Park Richfield offer full-hookup sites off the interstate, while Monroe Canyon RV Park provides a quieter setting toward the Sevier Plateau. Mystic Hot Springs, in nearby Monroe, adds RV hookups, tent sites, and converted vintage buses alongside its mineral soaking pools.
For a state-park experience, Wakara - Palisade State Park sits along Palisade Reservoir in Sanpete County, one of four campgrounds within the park. The park offers fishing, swimming, paddling, boating with electric motors only, and an 18-hole desert canyon golf course, making it a popular booked-ahead destination for RV travelers passing through central Utah.
Things to do around Aurora
Trail access is the main draw. The Paiute ATV Trail loops hundreds of miles of backcountry riding through the Sevier and Tushar ranges, with staging areas near Richfield and Marysvale. Fishlake National Forest adds hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing on lakes and creeks within a short drive.
Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe offers reservation-based soaking in mineral pools and cast-iron tubs fed by natural hot flows, a good stop after a day on the trails. Fremont Indian State Park, just west off I-70, protects rock art and pit-house sites with interpretive trails.
Families heading to Wakara - Palisade State Park will find swimming, paddling, and an 18-hole desert canyon golf course on-site, with the Arapeen ATV trail system nearby for OHV access.

Late spring through early fall is the practical window for RV travel around Aurora. May through September brings warm, mostly dry days, with July highs averaging around 32°C (about 90°F) and cool nights thanks to the roughly 5,300-foot elevation. Summer afternoons can produce brief monsoon thunderstorms from mid-July into August, which can affect dirt roads and washes.
Palisade State Park is open year-round, with reservations available through the Utah State Parks system from two days to four months in advance. Reservoir water warms enough for swimming by June, and the lake often freezes in winter, drawing ice anglers.
Winters are cold with regular snow at higher elevations. Richfield has a cold semi-arid climate with very low annual precipitation and a large seasonal temperature contrast, with cold winters that bring regular snowfall. Many private RV parks in the Sevier Valley stay open year-round, but higher forest campgrounds close, and mountain trails shift to snowmobile and cross-country ski use.
How to book campgrounds near Aurora
Private parks including Richfield KOA Holiday, Venture RV Park Richfield, Monroe Canyon RV Park, and Mystic Hot Springs take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Mystic Hot Springs also requires a separate advance reservation for hot-spring soaking, which is not included with a campsite and often sells out one to two weeks ahead.
Wakara - Palisade State Park is booked through the Utah State Parks reservation system, online or by calling the reservation call center at 800-322-3770, Monday through Friday. Individual campsite reservations can be made a minimum of two days in advance and up to four months in advance of the park check-out date, while group site reservations may be made up to 11 months in advance. Maximum stay is five nights. Sites fill quickly for summer weekends and holidays, so book as soon as the window opens.
What to expect on arrival
Expect high-desert conditions: dry air, strong sun, cool nights, and wide temperature swings between day and evening. Aurora and Richfield sit at roughly 5,300 feet, so newcomers from lower elevations should hydrate and plan for slower cooking times.
Private RV parks near town offer level pads, full hookups, laundry, and easy interstate access, and are generally big-rig friendly. At Wakara and the other Palisade State Park loops, each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill; modern restrooms with hot showers are available, though showers close from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to conserve water, and a dump station serves RV campers. Only electric motor boats are allowed on the reservoir.
Cell coverage is reliable along I-70 and in Richfield but drops quickly in the canyons. Check fire restrictions before lighting a campfire, especially in mid to late summer.
