Campgrounds near Hoytsville, Utah

Hoytsville sits along the Weber River in Summit County, Utah, in the high country between Coalville and Wanship. The area works well as an RV base because three reservoir-focused state parks are within a short drive, and Interstate 80 runs just north of town for easy access from Salt Lake City and Park City. Rockport State Park is less than 45 minutes from Salt Lake City and only 25 minutes from Park City, and sits directly south of Hoytsville on SR 32. Rockport Reservoir is about three miles long and one-half mile wide. At an elevation of over 6,000 feet, it covers more than 500 acres. Echo State Park lies a few minutes north near Coalville, and East Canyon State Park is roughly a 45-minute drive west over the ridge. Options range from full-hookup RV resorts to primitive shoreline sites. Echo Island RV Resort offers a private-park alternative for travelers who want reliable hookups, while the three state parks provide reservoir access at a more rustic price point.

Things to do near Hoytsville

Reservoir recreation drives most trips. This high elevation park provides year-round fishing, and warmer weather water sports including waterskiing, swimming, sailboarding and sailboating are popular at Rockport. Echo Reservoir adds 1,394 surface acres of open water for kayaking, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and more, and the marina area at Echo has beach access for families. Rockport also features a 3-D Archery Range complete with full-size deer, bison, elk, bears, and more, and the surrounding area preserves the history of the original town of Rockport, flooded when the Wanship Dam was built. East Canyon adds pioneer history: visitors can explore the adjacent Mormon Pioneer Trail, used by early Mormon settlers, the Donner-Reed party, and Pony Express riders. Park City shops, restaurants, and mountain biking trails are about 25 minutes away.

The camping window is defined by elevation. Rockport and Echo sit above 6,000 feet, so nights stay cool even in July, and shoulder seasons can produce frost. Warmer weather water sports including waterskiing, swimming, sailboarding and sailboating are popular, while ice fishing, cross country skiing, and nearby snowmobile trails are popular activities during winter months. Peak season runs roughly May through September. From May 1 to September 30, all campsites and cottages require reservations, which can be made through Reserve America at Echo, and campgrounds are open first come first serve Oct 1 to May 1 at Dry Hollow. Big Rock at East Canyon is seasonal and closes during winter months. Echo's shoreline sites depend on water levels. Beach camping is only available during certain times of the year based on reservoir conditions, typically opening in July, or once lake levels drop to around 80% capacity, and closing in October or earlier depending on weather and lake levels. Fire restrictions are common in late summer, so RV renters should check current status before travel.

We enjoyed our stay in this camper! We did a tour SLC - Page - Monument Valley - Arches in three days and this RV was up for the job. It is a bit older model, quite some engine/wind noise while on the road, so our third party member sometimes felt a bit left out sitting in the back. But sleeping comfort was great and it is just the right size to be able to access a diverse range of campgrounds. Also good contact with the owner! Responds to questions very fast and provides an elaborate briefing. Thank you for letting us stay in your RV!

Kiesha and Dan were some of the best hosts I’ve ever met when traveling. This was our first ever rv camping experience but they made it super easy and comfortable. They set the bar high for us, especially the communication. They would respond immediately and accurately whenever we needed anything and we really appreciated that. The van was everything in the description if not more. It’s very spacious yet cozy, perfect for a family trip. It is also easy to maneuver, the sensors and cameras really added to it as well. Our family of four had a fantastic week in Kiesha’s Solis exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The RV made camping a dream! How to book

Utah State Parks use ReserveAmerica for advance bookings at Rockport, Echo, and East Canyon. All campsites and yurts are available for reservation on a four-month rolling basis. For example, on January 10 individual sites are available for reservation through May 10. Campers can book a maximum of 13 days beyond the last date of the reservation window. Summer weekends at Juniper (Rockport's most developed loop) and Dry Hollow at Echo book out quickly, so setting a calendar reminder for the four-month window is worthwhile. The Reservation Call Center is at 800-322-3770 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time Monday through Friday. The call center is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Echo Island RV Resort is a private facility booked directly through the property. Off-season stays at Dry Hollow (Echo) and select Rockport loops are first-come, first-served.

What to expect

Expect high-desert conditions: dry air, strong sun, cool nights, and limited natural shade at most reservoir sites. The Juniper Loop has 23 RV sites with 30-amp electric and water connections, while Twin Coves is primitive with vault toilets and central water access. Big Rock at East Canyon has both hookup and non-hookup sites and closes seasonally. Gate hours and quiet hours are enforced. Hours at Rockport are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (17-hour access year-round). Gates are closed overnight. No collecting firewood: visitors must bring their own firewood, and Stage 2 fire restrictions can suspend all open flame during dry summers. Cell service is generally usable near the I-80 corridor and thins in East Canyon. Wildlife species at Rockport include mule deer, chipmunks, jackrabbits, cottontails, yellowbelly marmots, badgers, raccoons, weasels, fox and Uinta ground squirrels.
