Campgrounds and RV parks near Kanosh, UT

The area's headline attraction is Fremont Indian State Park and Museum, established to preserve a treasury of rock art and archaeological sites, with a museum visitor center that offers a video program introducing visitors to the Fremont Indians. Pathways, one accessible for the physically challenged, lead visitors into legend and history depicted through pictographs and petroglyphs, and short interpretive trails leave from the visitor center area. Off-highway vehicle riding is the other main draw. The Paiute ATV Trailhead is located about a quarter mile from the Castle Rock campground, and the trail system loops through the mountains east of Kanosh and connects to Fishlake National Forest. Local operators in Fillmore rent UTVs, ATVs, and e-bikes. Fishing at nearby reservoirs, hiking in the Pahvant Range, and touring the Territorial Statehouse in Fillmore round out a family itinerary.

Kanosh has a high-desert climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and mostly clear, and winters are cold with periodic snow. July is the hottest month, and afternoon thunderstorms are common during the July and August monsoon window. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime highs are moderate, nights are cool, and most campgrounds are open. At Fremont Indian State Park, both campgrounds are listed as open year round, but online reservations for campsites are accepted for the April through October window. Outside that window, sites are typically first-come, first-served, and shoulder-season travelers should confirm conditions with the park. Winter brings snow and hard freezes at the higher-elevation canyon sites, while lower-elevation parks along I-15 stay accessible most of the year. Wildfire restrictions can appear during hot, dry stretches: Stage 2 restrictions in Utah prohibit open fires of any kind, including charcoal, though properly shielded gas or liquid-fueled portable stoves with a shut-off valve are generally allowed.

Expect a mix of full-hookup private parks along I-15 and more rustic state park sites in the canyons to the south. At Fremont Indian State Park, the one-mile campground road is not paved, and OHV use is permitted in the campground to access trailheads only. Cell service is limited inside the canyon, so download maps before arrival. Fires are managed carefully. Gathering firewood is prohibited, and firewood is for sale at the campground. Pets are allowed at camping sites and on hiking trails when leashed and attended. Castle Rock sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 20 and 45 feet. Elevations in the area run roughly 4,900 to 6,200 feet, so nights are cool even in summer. Bring layers, sun protection, and extra water for daytime hikes and OHV rides.
