Campgrounds and RV parks near Mona, UT

The Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway is the headline drive, running 38 miles between Nephi and Payson through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest with numerous overlooks, trailheads, and picnic areas. The byway climbs to over 9,000 feet and passes Devil's Kitchen Geologic Site, a red-rock amphitheater with a short paved interpretive trail. Mona Reservoir sits just west of town and is a convenient shoreline stop for anglers. Yuba State Park, south on I-15, adds sandy beaches, boating, and swimming at Painted Rocks and Oasis. Payson Lakes, along the Nebo Loop, offers fishing, a paved nature path around the shoreline, and easy access to Mount Nebo Wilderness trailheads. Families often pair camping with the Young Living lavender farm north of town, Timpanogos Cave National Monument in American Fork Canyon, and the Provo River Parkway Trail for biking and walking along the water.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window. National forest campgrounds along the Nebo Loop, including Payson Lakes at roughly 8,000 feet, typically operate from mid-May through mid-October, with higher-elevation sites opening last as snow clears. The byway itself closes seasonally when heavy snow arrives, generally from late October through late spring. Lower-elevation private parks and Utah Lake State Park operate on longer or year-round schedules. Summer daytime temperatures in the valley run in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, with cool overnight lows and low humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms and gusty winds are common along the ridges and at Yuba Reservoir, so tie-downs and awning discipline matter. June is typically the driest month; July and August bring the North American Monsoon's stray showers. Fall shoulder season delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color along the Nebo Loop. Winter is cold and snowy, with January averaging a high near freezing and lows in the teens; forest roads close and higher campgrounds shut down until spring.

Private parks near Mona lean toward full hookups, pull-through sites, dump stations, and reliable cell coverage from the I-15 corridor. Expect open, high-desert sites with mountain views rather than dense shade. Big rigs handle the valley easily; I-15 through Juab Valley has wide lanes and gentle grades. Utah Lake State Park offers paved sites, restrooms with showers, a boat ramp, and a dump station, with lake-facing sites in demand. Nebo Loop forest campgrounds are more rustic, with vault or flush toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and no hookups; some loops accommodate longer trailers, but check length limits before booking. Payson Lakes has paved spurs and drinking water but no utility hookups. Water, dump stations, and fuel are reliable at Nephi and Springville. Pets are welcome on leash at state park and national forest campgrounds, and summer pavement can be hot, so plan walks for cooler hours.
