Camping near Monroe, Utah
Monroe sits in the Sevier Valley of central Utah at roughly 5,400 feet, tucked against the west flank of the Monroe Mountains and Fishlake National Forest. The town is best known for its geothermal springs and its position as a trailhead community on the Paiute ATV Trail, a public all-terrain vehicle trail system located in central Utah and managed by the Fishlake National Forest and the Richfield District of the Bureau of Land Management.
RV travelers typically base out of Monroe itself or the larger service town of Richfield about ten miles north. Monroe Canyon RV Park sits close to the mouth of Monroe Canyon with wider, longer sites suited to bigger rigs, while Mystic Hot Springs offers an unusual stay with soaking pools on site. Flying U Country Store & RV Park works as a convenient in-town stop, and Venture RV Park Richfield and Richfield KOA Holiday provide full-hookup options a short drive north.
The area is roughly an hour and a half from both Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef, making Monroe a practical hub for a multi-park itinerary through southern Utah.
Things to do around Monroe
Off-roading dominates the local scene. The Paiute Trail has over 2000 miles of primary and designated side trails, with the main #01 trail running 238 miles, and riders can access the network from local streets in towns like Monroe, Richfield, and Marysvale. Trails climb from valley floors near 5,000 feet up to alpine terrain above 11,000 feet on Fish Lake Hightop, so a single ride can move from sage desert to spruce and aspen forest.
Mystic Hot Springs draws visitors year-round for its travertine soaking tubs. Fish Lake, Utah's largest natural mountain lake, covers 2,500 acres and is famous for its 20 to 40 pound Mackinaw lake trout, with rainbow trout, perch, Kokanee salmon and splake also caught, plus boating, canoeing, hiking and wildlife viewing. Day trips reach Fremont Indian State Park to the southwest and the red rock of Capitol Reef to the east.

Summer is the primary RV season in the valley, with warm, dry days and cool nights. High-elevation destinations in Fishlake National Forest only fully open once snow clears. The Paiute Trail is usually completely open and clear of snow by mid-July, and after October, snow may close some of the higher elevation sections, so trips built around Fish Lake, Frying Pan, or backcountry Paiute Trail loops should target June through September.
Developed campgrounds along Fish Lake fill quickly on summer weekends and reservations are strongly recommended from mid-June through Labor Day. Weekends of major ATV jamborees also tighten availability in Monroe and Richfield, so booking well ahead is important.
Spring and fall bring lighter crowds and cooler temperatures in the valley, with aspen color typically peaking in late September at higher elevations. Winter keeps in-town parks operating in a limited capacity, while forest campgrounds and mountain roads are closed under snow.
How to book a site near Monroe
Private RV parks around Monroe and Richfield, including Monroe Canyon RV Park, Flying U Country Store & RV Park, Venture RV Park Richfield, and Richfield KOA Holiday, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Mystic Hot Springs handles camping reservations through its own booking system alongside soaking passes.
For public land, Fishlake National Forest campgrounds are booked through Recreation.gov, typically on a six-month rolling window. Frying Pan Campground offers a total of 11 campsites, six of which are available to reserve in advance, including five single sites and one large group site, while the remaining five campsites are available to campers on a first-come-first-serve basis. State park bookings, including Fremont Indian State Park, are handled through the Utah State Parks reservation system.
What to expect on the ground
Monroe is a small agricultural town, so expect basic services in town and full grocery, fuel, and RV supply options up in Richfield. Cell service is reliable in the valley and spotty once you climb into the canyons or onto forest roads.
Sites in the valley are generally level gravel with full hookups. Forest Service campgrounds in Fishlake tend to be more rustic. At Frying Pan, flush toilets and drinking water are provided, and roads and parking spurs are paved, though many higher sites have vault toilets only and no hookups.
Sites at Frying Pan are back-in and will accommodate trailers from 12 to 45 feet long, though longer rigs have limited turn radius on some loops. Bring layers, sun protection, and be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms in mid-summer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Monroe, UT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Monroe, UT?
RV rental in Monroe, UT is one of the best values in southern Utah, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $140 per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $175 to $275 per night. Because Monroe sits off the I-70 corridor rather than near a national park gateway, you'll often find cheaper RV rental Monroe options than you would in Moab or Springdale. To save even more, book midweek, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and travel in May or September when nightly rates dip. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in your dates fast, since Monroe's proximity to Mystic Hot Springs and the Paiute ATV Trail makes summer weekends fill up quickly.
utah.com/destinations/cities-towns/monroe/What license do I need to rent an RV in Monroe, Utah?
Great news for anyone first time renting an RV in Monroe: a regular driver's license is all you need. Utah does not require a commercial driver's license or special endorsement for the standard motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers listed on RVezy. You just need to be an RVezy approved driver (generally 25 or older) with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID inside the platform so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. No Utah-specific RV endorsement is needed, so you can focus on planning your Monroe RV trip instead of red tape.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Monroe booked through RVezy comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and that coverage helps protect you against most accidental damage to the RV so you are not on the hook for the unexpected. Hosts do not pick your coverage, you do, which means you control your own peace of mind. Combined with RVezy's customer support team available before, during, and after your trip, you can hit the Paiute ATV Trail or head toward Capitol Reef knowing help is one phone call away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Monroe RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. That means consistent rules across listings, so you can lock in your Monroe dates with confidence even if plans are still shifting. If a wildfire, blizzard on I-70, or other natural disaster disrupts your trip, RVezy's support team works with you on options. You can review the full current cancellation terms on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs near Mystic Hot Springs, knowing you have flexibility if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Monroe RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Monroe options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see rigs from hosts who welcome dogs, often with no extra fee beyond a small cleaning charge. Monroe is a dream for dog owners: leashed pups are welcome on most Fishlake National Forest trails just east of town, and the open lawns around Monroe City Park are perfect for a morning stretch. Mystic Hot Springs also allows leashed dogs on the grounds (not in the soaking pools). Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and pack a long lead since you'll spend plenty of evenings around the fire pit.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/fishlake/recreation/recarea/?recid=12534&actid=29Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Monroe?
Yes, RV delivery in Monroe is one of the smartest moves for first-timers and groups who would rather not drive a big rig. Many hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to a local RV park or a dispersed site in Fishlake National Forest, level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so a drop within Sevier County is often the most affordable. Use the Delivery filter to see which listings offer it, then message the host with your campground name. You show up, unlock the door, and start your vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Monroe%2C%20UtahHow far can I drive from Monroe on a typical mileage allowance?
Plenty far. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for an RV road trip from Monroe through Utah's Mighty 5. From Monroe you're about 110 miles to Capitol Reef National Park, 150 miles to Bryce Canyon, 220 miles to Zion, and 215 miles to Moab and Arches. A 5-night loop hitting Capitol Reef and Bryce easily fits within a 600-mile package. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're planning to circle multiple parks, and message the host with your route so they can confirm the package matches your plans.
nps.gov/care/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Monroe, UT?
You've got excellent options for RV camping Monroe within minutes of town. Monroe Canyon RV Park offers brand-new 80-foot pull-through sites with full hookups and direct Paiute ATV Trail access. Mystic Hot Springs has 32 full-hookup pull-through sites plus soaking pools right on property. Sevier River RV Park, just west of town, features 50-amp sites and a stocked fishing pond. About 25 minutes south, South Forty RV Park in Marysvale offers 75 big-rig sites with full hookups. For a state park option, Castle Rock Campground at Fremont Indian State Park (15 minutes west on I-70) puts you next to ancient petroglyphs. Book Mystic Hot Springs first, it sells out fastest.
stateparks.utah.gov/parks/fremont-indian/When is the best time to visit Monroe, UT in an RV?
Late April through mid-October is prime season for an RV rental in Monroe, UT, with the absolute sweet spots being May, June, and September. Summer daytime highs in Monroe (elevation 5,400 feet) usually hit the upper 80s to low 90s, while nights cool into the 50s, perfect for sitting outside. July and August bring monsoon afternoon thunderstorms, so plan hikes for mornings. Fall delivers golden aspens on Monroe Mountain and crisp 60-degree days. Winter is quieter but doable for hot-springs lovers: most local RV parks stay open year-round and Mystic Hot Springs is especially magical in the snow. Local insider tip: time your trip around the Red Rock Fly In to watch paragliders launch from Monroe Peak.
weather.gov/slc/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Monroe?
You'll do great. Monroe is one of the easiest places in Utah to learn because the roads are wide, traffic is light, and your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, slide-outs, the dump valves, and the dashboard. Highway 89 and I-70 around Monroe have generous shoulders and gentle grades compared to mountain passes elsewhere in the state. If you're still nervous, book a host who offers delivery so your first time behind the wheel is just a short drive to the next campground. Pro tip: practice a few right and left turns in the empty lot behind Monroe City Park before heading out, and you'll feel confident in 20 minutes.
udot.utah.gov/connect/public/safety/What happens if the RV breaks down on my Monroe trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking that includes a protection plan comes with 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on I-70, a dead battery at a Fishlake National Forest pullout, or a tow out of Clear Creek Canyon is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their rig, things like a fussy water pump or generator switch. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave. Sevier County has reliable cell coverage along I-70 and US-89, and Richfield (just 9 miles north) has full service centers and an auto parts store. Translation: even unexpected hiccups won't derail your Monroe RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from Monroe?
Monroe's central location makes it a launchpad for some of America's most iconic drives. Top RV road trip from Monroe routes include: Capitol Reef National Park via Scenic Byway 24 (110 miles, about 2 hours), the Mighty 5 loop hitting Bryce, Zion, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands (about 900 miles round trip), Fishlake National Forest and Boulder Mountain via Highway 25 (60 miles), and Moab via I-70 (215 miles, about 3 hours). Cross-border road trips into other U.S. states are fine, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Insider tip: drive Scenic Byway 12 between Torrey and Bryce, it's been called one of the most scenic highways in America.
nps.gov/care/index.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans 15 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg). Gas prices in Sevier County tend to run a bit higher than Salt Lake City but are reasonable for rural Utah, so a 600-mile loop through Capitol Reef and Bryce in a Class C will run roughly $200 to $275 in fuel. Fill up in Richfield (9 miles north on US-89) where prices are usually the lowest in the area. Pro tip: top off before heading east into Capitol Reef country since stations are sparse past Torrey.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Monroe?
For peak summer weekends, aim to reserve 2 to 4 months out, especially for Mystic Hot Springs and Monroe Canyon RV Park, which fill quickly thanks to ATV riders and hot-springs visitors. For Castle Rock Campground at Fremont Indian State Park, book through Utah State Parks' reservation system (ReserveAmerica) up to 4 months in advance. National forest campgrounds in nearby Fishlake National Forest are bookable on Recreation.gov 6 months out. Shoulder-season trips (April, May, September, October) can often be booked just 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekends, midweek availability is wide open, and most Monroe parks reward Tuesday-through-Thursday stays with better rates.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Monroe?
Driving around Monroe is refreshingly relaxed. US-89 and I-70 are well-maintained, wide, and rarely congested. The main thing to watch for: mountain grades east of town toward Fish Lake (some 6 to 8 percent climbs), summer afternoon thunderstorms with brief gusty winds, and the occasional deer or cattle crossing on rural stretches at dawn and dusk. Winter can bring snow and ice on Monroe Mountain and I-70 west toward the Tushar range, so check UDOT's road conditions site before heading out from November through March. Insider tip: avoid driving Highway 25 toward Fish Lake right after a heavy rain, the gravel sections can get slick. Otherwise, smooth sailing for your motorhome rental Monroe adventure.
udot.utah.gov/connect/public/road-weather-alerts/What amenities should I expect at Monroe-area campgrounds?
Most full-service RV parks around Monroe offer 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, sewer hookups, free WiFi, clean restrooms with hot showers, and laundry. Monroe Canyon RV Park has all of the above plus 80-foot pull-through sites; Sevier River RV Park adds a fishing pond and hot tub. Need to dump tanks or fill fresh water between stops? You can dump at Monroe Canyon RV Park, Sevier River RV Park, and the Richfield KOA (9 miles north), most charging $10 to $15 for non-guests. Fishlake National Forest campgrounds are primitive (vault toilets, no hookups), so come with full tanks. Pro tip: confirm 50-amp availability with your host if you're renting a larger Class A.
fs.usda.gov/fishlakeWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Monroe?
You'll be impressed. Most RV rental Monroe listings come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert to extra sleeping space, a kitchen with stove, oven (or convection microwave), fridge/freezer, sink, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically include a roof AC, furnace, generator, exterior speakers, and seatbelted seating for the whole family. Many hosts add TVs, WiFi hotspots, outdoor camp chairs, and starter kits with linens, dishes, and coffee makers. Campervans on the platform tend to focus on simplicity: bed, kitchenette, and stealth-camping ready. Pro tip: check the listing's sleeps count and seatbelt count for a family RV trip Monroe, they're not always the same number.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Monroe RVs?
Hosts in Monroe offer popular add-ons that make your trip easier: linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor furniture, bike racks, generators, propane fills, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's property in or near Monroe, with most hosts offering a free 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies typically range from 100 free miles per night to truly unlimited, with overage fees set by each host. Many hosts also allow late pickup or early drop-off windows on request. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a generator add-on if you are heading to a hookup-free Fishlake National Forest site, you will save versus sourcing separately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Monroe%2C%20UtahHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform at booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by RV) and is released after your trip ends, provided the rig comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough video walk-around with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: keep gas receipts from your last fill-up so there is zero ambiguity, and your deposit will be back in your account shortly after the trip.
