On land, Fred Hayes State Park offers a 3D archery course, disc golf, slacklines, and geocaching, all close to the developed campgrounds. OHV riders use Knight Hollow as a base for ATV trails in the surrounding desert and foothills. Afternoon winds sweep across the open water and can affect boating plans. Spring and fall are quieter shoulder seasons. Temperatures are milder, crowds are thinner, and the reservoir stays usable for fishing and paddling, though water temperatures run cool. Spring is the wetter part of the year in this high desert, with March and May seeing the most precipitation, and late-summer thunderstorms can also bring brief heavy rain. Winter keeps the park open year-round but limits water activity. Snow, freezing nights, and short days mean few visitors, and services at primitive areas are minimal. The reservoir usually freezes over in most winters, though thin spots persist near the inlet at Knight Hollow. Confirm which hookups and restrooms remain in service before arrival.

Knight Hollow and Juniper Point are primitive, with vault toilets, no water, and no electricity. Primitive campers can pay a small fee to use the developed showers.
