Campgrounds near Ascutney, Vermont
Ascutney sits in Vermont's Connecticut River Valley in the shadow of 3,144-foot Mount Ascutney, a monadnock that dominates the skyline and anchors the local park system. RV travelers use the village as a base for state park camping, riverside paddling, and easy day trips to Woodstock, the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, and southern New Hampshire.
The two closest public options are run by Vermont State Parks. Mount Ascutney State Park offers a mix of wooded tent/RV sites, lean-tos, and rental cabins, with no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Wilgus State Park's compact riverside campground includes 4 cabins, 15 tent/RV sites, and 6 lean-to sites, many with views of the Connecticut River.
Private campgrounds fill in the gaps for larger rigs and longer stays. Running Bear Camping Area sits near the base of Mount Ascutney, Tree Farm Campground occupies a mature pine setting outside Springfield, and Crown Point Camping Area sits on 30 acres above Stoughton Pond in nearby Perkinsville with full hookup sites.
Things to do around Ascutney
Hiking is the headline activity. Mount Ascutney State Park has four trailheads and more than 12 miles of hiking trails leading to the summit ridge, where a lookout tower and hang-glider launches deliver long views over the Connecticut River Valley. The park also maintains a roughly 3-mile mountain biking trail designed for all skill levels, built by the Vermont Mountain Bike Association and accessible from the campground.
Paddling centers on the Connecticut River. Wilgus State Park is the only developed state park on the Vermont shores of the river, with a hand-carry boat launch and on-site canoe and kayak rentals during summer. Anglers work the river for trout, bullhead, and panfish.
For families, Crown Point offers a swimming lagoon with a sandy beach, mini-golf, and access to Stoughton Pond, and Woodstock's shops and Billings Farm are a short drive north.

The camping season here is short and weather-driven. Mount Ascutney State Park typically operates from the third weekend in May through the third weekend in October, while Wilgus State Park usually opens in late April or early May and runs through the second Monday in October, making it one of the earliest Vermont state parks to open each spring. Private campgrounds generally run from early May through mid-October.
Summer brings the warmest, driest weather and the busiest weekends, with sites at the two state parks and along the river often booked well ahead for July and August. Late September into early October delivers fall foliage, and mountain-view sites at Wilgus and Mount Ascutney become the hardest to reserve.
Spring is muddy and cool, with black flies peaking in late May and early June. Winter closes most facilities, though Crown Point Camping Area reopens a winter season for snowmobile access to the local trail network.
How to book
The two state parks share one reservation system. Camping reservations at Mount Ascutney and Wilgus can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis through the Vermont State Parks reservation website or by calling the reservation center. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Running Bear Camping Area, Tree Farm Campground, and Crown Point Camping Area all take reservations by phone or through their own websites. For summer weekends and foliage season, reserve as early as possible; the small state park loops fill first.
What to expect
State park sites in this area are rustic. Mount Ascutney and Wilgus offer flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, and potable water, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Wilgus has one restroom building with running water and hot showers, plus a group camping area and picnic shelter dating to the Civilian Conservation Corps era. Wi-Fi is available at the Wilgus contact station along with canoe and kayak rentals.
Private parks are the choice for full hookups and larger rigs. Crown Point Camping Area offers full hookup RV sites, laundry, a store, a dump station, and a sandy swim beach on its lagoon.
One practical rule applies at every Vermont state park: do not bring firewood into the state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated, with a USDA or state agriculture department certification on the label.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Ascutney RV rental?
You have flexibility on your side. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and it includes a money-back grace period after you book so you are not locked in the moment you click confirm. If a Vermont nor'easter, hurricane remnant, or other natural event impacts your trip, RVezy's support team works with you to find a fair solution. The exact terms depend on how far out you cancel and the circumstances, and the Help Center walks through it in plain English. Bottom line: booking your Ascutney RV trip is low-risk, so you can lock in that fall foliage week with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Ascutney RV rental?
Absolutely. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Ascutney with hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you are here, Mount Ascutney State Park allows leashed dogs throughout the campground and on hiking trails, including the summit route. Wilgus State Park along the Connecticut River is also dog-friendly, and Windsor's riverside paths are great for morning walks. Pro tip: pack a tick remover and check your pup after hikes, since Vermont's woods are tick country from May through October.
vtstateparks.com/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Ascutney?
Yes, RV delivery in Ascutney is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer directly to Mount Ascutney State Park, Wilgus State Park, or a nearby private campground, level it, hook up what is needed, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching and check each host's delivery radius and fee. This is a game-changer if you are flying into Lebanon Municipal Airport (LEB) or Manchester-Boston Regional and don't want to tow anything. Pro tip: message the host first to confirm delivery to your specific campsite loop, since some state park sites have tight turns.
vtstateparks.com/ascutney.htmlHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Ascutney?
Plenty far. Ascutney's location right off Interstate 91 makes it a launchpad for incredible New England road trips. Mileage policies are set by each host on RVezy, and you will find listings with generous daily allowances and even some with RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. From Ascutney, Quechee Gorge is about 20 minutes north, Killington Resort is roughly 40 miles west, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about 90 minutes northeast, Lake Champlain is around 2 hours, and Acadia National Park in Maine is a doable 5-hour drive. Pro tip: check the mileage section on each listing before booking so you can plan your route with no surprises at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ascutney,VermontWhere are the best campgrounds near Ascutney, VT?
You are in one of Vermont's best-kept camping pockets. The best campgrounds near Ascutney include Mount Ascutney State Park (wooded sites and lean-tos at the base of the mountain, no hookups but a dump station on site), Wilgus State Park (a small riverside gem on the Connecticut River, usually one of the first Vermont state parks to open in spring), Running Bear Camping Area on Route 5 (family-friendly with full hookups), and Quechee/Pine Valley KOA about 25 minutes north for full hookups and easy I-91 access. Pro tip: state park sites book fast for foliage season, so reserve as soon as the calendar opens.
vtstateparks.com/ascutney.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an Ascutney RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an Ascutney RV trip, with each season offering something special. June through August brings warm days in the 75 to 85 F range, cool nights in the 50s, and full access to Mount Ascutney's trail network. Late September through the second week of October is legendary fall foliage with crisp 40 to 65 F days. Mid-May and early September are smart shoulder-season picks: fewer crowds, lower nightly rates, and reduced bug pressure. Pro tip: book foliage weeks by mid-summer, since this corridor of Vermont is one of New England's most popular leaf destinations.
weather.gov/btv/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Ascutney?
You're going to do great, Ascutney is actually one of the friendliest places in New England to learn. First time renting an RV? Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, leveling system, propane, water, and waste tanks before you ever turn the key. Roads around Ascutney are well-maintained and rural, with Interstate 91 offering wide lanes for easy highway driving up to Quechee or down to Brattleboro. Skip the steep, narrow Mount Ascutney Auto Road in a big rig and you're golden. Pro tip: do a slow lap of an empty parking lot at Windsor's Park and Ride before hitting the highway to get a feel for the size.
vtrans.vermont.gov/highway/mapsWhat if I break down during my Ascutney RV trip?
You are covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking through the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on Interstate 91, parked at Wilgus State Park, or making your way along Route 131. Roadside covers the common stuff: flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-91 and in Windsor, though it can get patchy on backroads up toward Reading or Cavendish, so download offline maps before you head into the hills. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside number and the RV's VIN at pickup so you have everything ready if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ascutney RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, and this is one of the joys of an RV road trip from Ascutney. You can be in three states by lunchtime: New Hampshire is across the Connecticut River (under 10 minutes to Cornish or Claremont), Massachusetts is about 90 minutes south on I-91, and Maine's coast is roughly 4 hours east. Cross-border travel into Canada (Montreal is about 3.5 hours north) may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms on the listing, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: bring your passport or enhanced license if Canada is on the table, and confirm in writing through the RVezy messaging system.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Ascutney RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, but it is easy to plan. Most Class C motorhomes around Ascutney get roughly 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans land closer to 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Vermont gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and diesel is usually 20 to 40 cents higher than regular. A 300-mile loop hitting Mount Ascutney, Quechee, Woodstock, and Killington in a Class C might run about $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at stations in Windsor or White River Junction, where prices tend to be lower than at I-91 exit-only stops.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ascutney?
For the best sites, book early. Vermont State Parks (including Mount Ascutney and Wilgus) open reservations roughly 11 months in advance through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system, and prime foliage weeks in late September and early October fill up quickly. Private parks like Running Bear and Quechee/Pine Valley KOA generally take reservations a year out and book up by spring for summer weekends. For a spontaneous midweek summer trip, you can often find open sites 1 to 2 weeks out, especially Sunday through Wednesday. Pro tip: pair your Ascutney RV rental booking with your campground reservation on the same day, so your dates line up perfectly.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Ascutney?
Mostly easy and very scenic. Interstate 91 runs right past Ascutney with wide lanes, gentle grades, and excellent maintenance, making it one of the best highways in New England for an RV. Route 5 along the Connecticut River and Route 131 are pleasant two-lane roads with light traffic. The one stretch to plan around is the Mount Ascutney Auto Road inside the state park, which climbs with tight switchbacks and is recommended for cars and small campervans only, not large motorhomes. Winter (November through March) brings snow, ice, and frost heaves, so most RV rentals in Vermont operate May through October. Pro tip: check 511VT before any drive in shoulder season for real-time road conditions and construction updates.
511vt.com/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ascutney?
Heads up: Vermont State Parks, including Mount Ascutney State Park and Wilgus State Park, do not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, but both have a sanitary dump station, potable water fill, modern flush restrooms, and coin-operated hot showers. If you want full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer at the site), book a private park like Running Bear Camping Area or Quechee/Pine Valley KOA. Most RVs on RVezy have onboard fresh water tanks, batteries, and generators that easily handle a few nights off-grid at a state park. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump your tanks on the way in, so you are set to relax under the Vermont stars.
vtstateparks.com/ascutney.htmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Ascutney?

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ascutney,VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with an RV rental in Ascutney?
Plenty of useful extras to make life easier. Pricing is set per host and shown right on the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home base around Ascutney, Windsor, or White River Junction, with many offering delivery to Mount Ascutney State Park or your driveway for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary, so check that line before booking. Pro tip: ask about local maps and overlook recommendations, since Ascutney hosts often know hidden spots tourists never find.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ascutney,VermontHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Ascutney, payment is processed entirely through the RVezy platform, no cash, no checks, no third-party apps. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with the host at pickup and drop-off, that simple step is the single best way to keep your deposit return smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Ascutney, VT?
You are sitting on a goldmine of New England road trip routes. Top picks from Ascutney include Quechee Gorge and Woodstock (20 to 30 minutes north, one of Vermont's most photogenic small towns), Killington and Okemo for mountain views and hiking (40 to 60 minutes), the White Mountains and Franconia Notch in New Hampshire (about 90 minutes northeast), Lake Champlain and Burlington (about 2 hours northwest), and Acadia National Park in Maine (a stunning 5-hour drive east).
