Campgrounds near Castleton, Vermont
Castleton sits in western Vermont's Taconic Mountains, minutes from Lake Bomoseen, the largest lake located entirely within the state. The area is a compact cluster of state-park campgrounds and private options, most within a short drive of town, making it a practical base for a lake-focused RV trip.
Bomoseen State Park anchors the region, with tent and RV sites, lean-tos, a sanitary dump station, and no utility hookups. Nearby, Half Moon Pond State Park sits within the same larger state parcel and offers a quieter pond setting. Lake St Catherine State Park to the south provides another lakefront state option, and Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday adds a private, full-service alternative with pull-thrus, pools, and boat access. Smoke Rise Campground rounds out the list for renters wanting a smaller private ground.
RV renters should note that Vermont state parks do not offer utility hookups but do provide dump stations, potable water, and coin-operated hot showers.
Things to do near Castleton
Lake Bomoseen drives most of the recreation. The state-park beach has a sandy swim area, a concession stand, and boat rentals including canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and pedal boats. Anglers target bass, northern pike, perch, and trout across Lake Bomoseen, Glen Lake, Half Moon Pond, and Lake St Catherine.
On land, the Slate History Trail passes 19th-century quarry sites tied to the West Castleton Railroad and Slate Company. The Glen Lake Trail connects Bomoseen State Park with Half Moon Pond State Park, providing longer hiking and wildlife viewing options.
Off-park attractions within roughly an hour include Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site, Wilson Castle, the Vermont Marble Museum, and Fort Ticonderoga just across the New York line.

Vermont state park campgrounds, including Bomoseen, Half Moon Pond, and Lake St Catherine, operate seasonally, with most running roughly from Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October. Exact opening and closing dates are set year by year. Private grounds such as Lake Bomoseen KOA typically run a similar warm-weather season, with pool access from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
July and August are peak. Weekend sites, and especially lakefront lean-tos at Bomoseen, fill quickly, and reservations are strongly recommended. Weekdays are noticeably quieter. Late September and early October bring cooler nights and Vermont's fall foliage, which draws a second wave of bookings but with more site availability than mid-summer.
Winter is not a camping season here. Freezing temperatures, snow cover, and closed facilities mean RV travelers should plan trips between late spring and mid-fall.
How to book a campsite near Castleton
Vermont State Parks, including Bomoseen, Half Moon Pond, and Lake St Catherine, use one central reservation system. Sites can be booked online, by calling the Reservation Call Center at 1-888-409-7579 Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, or, in-season, by contacting the park directly. Reservations open on a rolling basis up to 11 months in advance, with new dates released daily at 9 am.
Reservations made more than 7 days out require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival. Same-day reservations can be made until 2 pm on the day of arrival.
Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday and Smoke Rise Campground are booked directly through each operator's own website and reservation system.
What to expect at Castleton-area campgrounds
Expect a mix of state-park simplicity and one full-service private option. Bomoseen State Park has 55 tent/RV sites and 10 lean-tos, no hookups, a dump station, flush toilets, hot and cold running water, and token-operated hot showers. Sites vary from wooded to open and grassy, with some on the lakeshore.
Lake St Catherine State Park adds 50 tent/RV sites, 11 lean-tos, and one cabin, again with a dump station and no hookups. Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday sits on wooded acreage with pull-thru RV sites, swimming pools, a boat launch, and boat rentals.
Out-of-state firewood is restricted in Vermont state parks unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated with USDA or state certification. Black bears live in the surrounding forest, so food should be stored securely.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Castleton%2C%20VermontDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Castleton, VT?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Castleton, VT. Vermont does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identity through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly, usually for under $25. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is, which leaves more time for planning your route to Lake Bomoseen.
dmv.vermont.gov/licensesWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Castleton?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RVezy reservation in Castleton includes a renter protection plan along with 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head down Route 4 toward Killington or Route 30 toward Lake St. Catherine knowing help is one call away. During checkout, you'll choose the protection level that fits your trip, whether that's a quick weekend at Half Moon Pond or a two-week New England loop. Each plan offers different coverage limits for damage to the RV during your trip. Pro tip: review the protection options carefully before booking, especially if you're new to RVing, so you can drive off feeling confident.

You've got flexibility built in. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there's a grace period after booking that allows a full refund if your plans change quickly. After that, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or provides travel credits to help you rebook. Full policy details are available in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for foliage season (late September through mid-October), knowing you have a clear policy if your schedule shifts.

Lake Bomoseen State Park, Half Moon Pond State Park, and the Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday all allow leashed dogs at campsites, though pets aren't allowed on the swimming beach at Bomoseen. Glen Lake, a short walk from Bomoseen, is a great alternative where dogs can splash freely. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and let them know your dog's size so they can recommend the most pet-friendly setup. Don't forget poop bags and a long leash for the Slate History Trail.
vtstateparks.com/bomoseen.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Castleton?
Yes, and it's often the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Castleton, bringing the motorhome or travel trailer right to your campsite at Bomoseen State Park, Half Moon Pond, or Lake Bomoseen KOA, then leveling the rig, connecting available hookups, and walking you through every system. This is perfect if you're new to RVing or arriving by plane into Rutland or Burlington. To find delivery-ready listings, use the Delivery filter when you search. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery to private destinations too, such as a relative's driveway in Castleton Four Corners or a venue near Castleton University, since many hosts are happy to accommodate.

Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop, message the host before booking and ask about a flat-fee unlimited mileage add-on, which often saves money on multi-state adventures.
vtrans.vermont.gov/highwayWhere are the best campgrounds near Castleton, VT for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Castleton include Bomoseen State Park (tent/RV sites along Vermont's largest in-state lake, with a sandy beach and the Slate History Trail), Half Moon Pond State Park (a quieter, more wooded option about 10 miles away), Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday in Hubbardton (full hookup sites with a pool and marina), and Lake St. Catherine State Park in nearby Poultney (lakefront sites with hot showers). For RV camping near Castleton, you can also explore Crown Point Camping Area just across the New York line. Pro tip: Vermont State Park campgrounds do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, so book the KOA if you want full hookups for your motorhome rental.
vtstateparks.com/bomoseen.htmlWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Castleton, VT?
The sweet spot is late June through mid-October. Summer (late June through August) brings warm days typically in the 75 to 82 degree range and comfortable nights around 55 degrees, perfect for swimming in Lake Bomoseen. Fall foliage from late September into mid-October is legendary in this corner of Vermont, with the Taconic and Green Mountains turning red and gold, though you'll want to book your Castleton RV trip 3 to 6 months ahead because rigs and campsites fill quickly. Spring (May to early June) is quieter and cheaper but can be muddy. Winters are cold (often in the teens and 20s) and most campgrounds close in mid to late October. Pro tip: target the last week of September for peak color with smaller crowds.
weather.gov/btv/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Castleton?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in Castleton, where the roads around Route 4, Route 30, and Route 4A are well-paved, relatively flat through the lake valleys, and far less congested than city driving. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, generator, water systems, and dump valves, and they're a text away during your trip. If you want to skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: practice a couple of right-hand turns in an empty lot (Castleton University's lots are great after hours) before heading to your campsite to build confidence with the longer wheelbase.
vtrans.vermont.gov/operations/maintenanceWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so if you have a flat tire on Route 4 near Killington, a battery issue at Half Moon Pond, or a mechanical hiccup heading down Route 30 toward Lake St. Catherine, help is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions about the rig's systems, like resetting the generator or troubleshooting the fridge. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate just in case.
dmv.vermont.gov/enforcement-and-safetyCan I take my Castleton RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and interstate trips are totally doable from Castleton. Driving into New York (under 30 minutes to the Fort Ticonderoga ferry), New Hampshire, Massachusetts, or Maine is straightforward and covered by your standard rental terms. Heading to Canada (Montreal is just 3 hours north via I-89) is often allowed, but you must confirm with your host before booking because not all hosts permit cross-border travel due to insurance considerations. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental. Popular RV road trip from Castleton routes include the Lake Champlain Islands loop, the White Mountains via Conway, NH, and the full Vermont Route 100 scenic drive. Pro tip: message the host through the listing page before booking to confirm Canadian travel and bring your passport.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in the Castleton area?
Budget realistically and you'll have plenty left for maple creemees. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs around 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans 16 to 22 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gasoline in the Castleton and Rutland area generally runs slightly above the national average, so plan around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon as a working estimate. For a typical 4-night trip with 250 miles of driving in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Rutland (15 minutes east on Route 4) rather than at smaller stations along Route 30, where prices tend to be 20 to 40 cents higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Castleton?
Earlier is better, but you've got options either way. For Vermont State Parks like Bomoseen and Half Moon Pond, reservations open up to 11 months in advance on a rolling daily basis through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system. For summer weekends in July and August, book 3 to 6 months out, and for prime foliage weekends in late September and early October, book as soon as the booking window opens. Lake Bomoseen KOA also fills early. Pro tip: same-day and short-notice reservations are often available at Vermont State Parks, so if you're feeling spontaneous, midweek availability can be surprisingly good even in summer.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Castleton year-round?
Driving around Castleton is wonderfully manageable. Route 4, Route 30, and Route 4A through town are mostly two-lane state highways with gentle grades through the Taconic Mountains. Summer is smooth sailing. Fall brings heavier foliage traffic, especially on weekends, so leave early. Spring features Vermont's famous mud season (late March through April), when some back roads near campgrounds can get soft. Winters bring snow, ice, and occasional whiteouts. Watch for white-tailed deer and the occasional moose at dawn and dusk year-round, particularly along Route 30 north toward Sudbury. Pro tip: download the 511VT app for real-time Vermont road conditions and construction updates before heading out, and pad your driving time by 20 percent during foliage weekends.
vtrans.vermont.gov/operations/traveler-infoWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Castleton?
You'll find a great mix depending on where you book. Vermont State Parks like Bomoseen and Half Moon Pond offer 55 and 60-plus tent/RV sites respectively, with hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and potable water fill, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday offers full hookups (30 and 50 amp), a pool, splash pad, mini golf, camp store, and Wi-Fi across its 148 sites. Lake St. Catherine State Park has similar amenities to Bomoseen with lakefront access. Pro tip: the dump station at Bomoseen State Park is open to registered campers, and there's also a public dump station at the Lake Bomoseen KOA you can pay to use even if you're not staying there.
vtstateparks.com/campingWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Castleton?
You'll have everything you need to feel at home on the lake. Most RVs on RVezy in the Castleton area come fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 people (queen beds, bunks, or convertible dinettes), a kitchen with a stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning and a furnace for chilly Vermont nights), and often a TV. Many include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, and outdoor camp chairs. Class C motorhomes have seatbelts for travel passengers. Campervan rental Castleton options are perfect for couples wanting something nimble. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list carefully and message the host if you want extras like a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, which is handy because cell signal can be spotty near Glen Lake.
vtstateparks.com/campingWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your rental to make life easier. Common host add-ons in Castleton include camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bedding and linen kits, kitchen kits, generators (sometimes included), bike or kayak racks, and propane refills. Many hosts also offer delivery to Bomoseen State Park or the KOA for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup is typically self-service at the host's location, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by host, so look for unlimited mileage if you're planning a Vermont Route 100 loop. Pro tip: bundle bedding plus a kitchen kit if you're flying into Burlington or Albany to skip a store run on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Castleton%2C%20VermontHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Castleton through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, so there's no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before the trip starts (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), and it's released after a smooth return with no damage or excessive cleaning. The protection plan you choose at checkout helps cover most accidental damage during the trip, which helps keep your deposit safer. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, both timestamped, so there's a clear record.
