Camping near Newport, Vermont
Newport sits at the southern tip of Lake Memphremagog in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, roughly eight miles from the Canadian border. The city serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the lake, the surrounding hills of Orleans County, and nearby destinations like Jay Peak, Lake Willoughby, and Kingdom Trails in East Burke.
Campground options in the immediate area lean toward private, family-run parks rather than large resort chains. Tree Corners Family Campground and Belview Campground offer sites within a short drive of downtown Newport, while Will-O-Wood Campground and Barrewood Campground extend options south and east toward the surrounding lakes and forests. Just across the border in Quebec, Camping Carrefour Des Campeurs gives travelers a Canadian-side alternative for exploring the northern reaches of Lake Memphremagog.
Most private campgrounds in the region provide full or partial hookups, dump stations, and lake or river access. State-run camping is also within easy driving distance for RV renters willing to trade some hookups for wooded, waterfront sites.
Things to do near Newport
Lake Memphremagog is the main draw. The lake straddles the U.S.-Canada border, and boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing for salmon, trout, and bass fill most summer itineraries. A waterfront path and bike trail connect downtown Newport to the shoreline and extend toward the Canadian border, making the area accessible without moving the RV.
Beyond the water, day trips reach Jay Peak Resort for lift-served hiking and an indoor waterpark, Mount Pisgah for views over Lake Willoughby, and Kingdom Trails in East Burke for one of the best mountain-bike networks in the Northeast. Brighton State Park near Island Pond adds hiking through boreal forest and a moose observation platform.
Downtown Newport itself has a compact waterfront district with restaurants, a farmers market in season, and boat launches within walking distance of Prouty Beach.

The practical camping season in the Newport area runs from mid-May through mid-October. Private campgrounds generally open around Memorial Day and close by Columbus Day, matching the schedule of most Vermont State Parks, which typically operate from Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October.
July and August are the busiest months, with warm days suited to swimming and paddling and cool nights that can still drop into the low fifties. September brings quieter campgrounds, cooler temperatures, and the start of fall foliage; peak color in the Northeast Kingdom generally arrives in late September to early October and fills sites quickly with leaf-peepers. Reserve well ahead for foliage weekends.
Winter closes most RV camping in the region. Roads and hookups at private parks are shut down, snowfall is heavy, and lakes freeze thick enough to support ice fishing. A limited number of state park sites remain open for hike-in off-season camping, but these are not accessible by RV.
How to book a campsite near Newport
Private campgrounds around Newport, including Tree Corners Family Campground, Belview Campground, Will-O-Wood Campground, and Barrewood Campground, are booked directly through each park's website or by phone. Popular holiday weekends, foliage dates, and lakefront sites can fill months in advance, so lock in dates early if the trip is tied to a specific weekend.
Vermont State Parks use a central reservation system at vtstateparks.com and a call center at 1-888-409-7579. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance on a daily rolling window, and same-day reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. through the park directly. Note that Vermont State Park campgrounds do not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups; dump stations are available on site.
For sites across the border, Camping Carrefour Des Campeurs is booked through the campground directly. Travelers crossing into Quebec should carry passports and confirm any pet or firewood restrictions before the trip.
What to expect
Expect a mix of open lakefront sites and wooded interior sites. Private parks around Newport tend to offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and often sewer hookups, plus amenities like laundry, showers, camp stores, and playgrounds. State park sites are more rustic: no hookups, but larger and more private wooded pitches with lake or river access.
Cell coverage is uneven once outside downtown Newport, and WiFi at rural campgrounds is often limited to the office area. Plan for offline maps and download reservation confirmations before arriving.
Do not bring firewood into Vermont from outside the state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated with USDA or state agriculture certification. Buy firewood locally at the campground or a nearby store. Nights are cool even in midsummer, so pack layers and expect mosquitoes and blackflies from late May into July.
