Norwich camping overview
Norwich sits in Vermont's Upper Valley on the Connecticut River, directly across from Hanover, New Hampshire and Dartmouth College. The town is small and mostly rural, so most RV campgrounds sit a short drive away in the Quechee, White River Junction, and Lebanon corridors, all within roughly 15 to 25 minutes.
The closest options include Quechee / Pine Valley KOA Holiday and Quechee State Park Camping, both near Quechee Gorge. A little farther out, Rest N Nest Campground, Pastures Campground The, and Mascoma Lake Campground by Modern America Campgrounds add lakeside and quieter rural choices on the New Hampshire side. Together they cover the range from full-hookup private parks with pools and cabins to state-park loops with lean-tos and no hookups.
RVers using Norwich as a base can reach Woodstock, the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, and White Mountains trailheads without moving camp.
Things to do near Norwich
The headline stop is Quechee Gorge, Vermont's deepest gorge, with a rim trail and a hike down to the Ottauquechee River. The gorge was formed by glacial activity roughly 13,000 years ago, and visitors look down at the river flowing about 165 feet below viewpoints along Route 4. The Vermont Institute of Natural Science next door runs raptor programs that work well with kids.
In Norwich itself, families visit the Montshire Museum of Science, walk the Connecticut River paths, and cross into Hanover for the Dartmouth green and campus museums. Woodstock, about 20 minutes west, has covered bridges, Billings Farm, and the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.
Anglers fish the Ottauquechee and White rivers for trout, and Mascoma Lake offers swimming, paddling, and boat launches. In fall, Route 4 and Route 10 are popular leaf-peeping drives.

The RV season in the Upper Valley is short. Most campgrounds open around mid-May and close in mid-October, tracking the frost calendar. Quechee State Park runs Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October. Quechee / Pine Valley KOA Holiday also operates seasonally on a mid-May through mid-October window typical of the region.
Summer is peak. July and August fill quickly with families, Dartmouth visitors, and travelers routing through on I-89 and I-91. Weekends around the Fourth of July and mid-August book out first. Late September through Columbus Day is the foliage window, and sites at Quechee State Park and nearby KOAs are often the hardest to get all year, so reserve well in advance.
Spring shoulder season brings mud, blackflies in May, and cool nights, but also open sites and quiet trails. Winter camping is largely unavailable at private RV parks, and Vermont state parks are closed to vehicle-based camping, with only limited hike-in off-season use permitted.
How to book near Norwich
Reservation systems split by operator. Quechee State Park is booked through the Vermont State Parks system, where camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week.
Quechee / Pine Valley KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website or by phone, with standard KOA cancellation and deposit terms. Rest N Nest Campground, Pastures Campground The, and Mascoma Lake Campground by Modern America Campgrounds each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and policies vary, so confirm minimum stays for holiday weekends.
For foliage weekends, book by late spring. For peak summer, aim for six to eight weeks out at private parks and earlier for state park sites.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of full-hookup private parks and hookup-free state campgrounds. Quechee / Pine Valley KOA Holiday offers pull-through sites with 30 and 50 amp service, water, sewer, a pool, laundry, and cabins, and can accommodate larger rigs on its terraced hillside layout near White River Junction.
Quechee State Park is a different experience: wooded, quieter, and hookup-free. The park has 45 tent/RV sites and 7 lean-to sites, with two restrooms offering flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers. Sites accommodate RVs up to about 48 feet, and there is a sanitary dump station but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, which is standard across the Vermont state park system.
Cell service is generally reliable near the interstates and spottier in the hills. Bears are present, so store food and trash accordingly.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Norwich, VT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Norwich, VT?
An RV rental in Norwich is more affordable than most travelers expect, especially compared to Upper Valley lodges during foliage season. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400. You save the most by booking midweek, traveling in late spring or early summer before the leaf-peepers arrive, and choosing a host with generous mileage. Pro tip: Norwich sits right across the Connecticut River from Hanover, NH, so a cheap RV rental in Norwich doubles as a base for Dartmouth weekends and Quechee Gorge day trips without paying resort pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Norwich%2C%20VermontDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Norwich, Vermont?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Norwich, Vermont. Vermont does not require a Commercial Driver's License or any special RV endorsement for the Class A, Class B, Class C, travel trailer, or fifth wheel rigs listed on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens inside the RVezy platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association along with your valid license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the licensing question disappears.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Norwich?
Every RVezy booking in Norwich comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle and offers real financial peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can match protection to your comfort with driving a larger rig through the Upper Valley's winding roads. Pro tip: bumping up to a higher protection tier is the move many first-time renters make before a Vermont fall foliage trip, when narrow back roads and unfamiliar hills are part of the adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Norwich RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets one consistent cancellation policy, with a grace period right after booking so you can lock in dates with confidence. After that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel relative to the trip start date. You do not have to hunt through individual listings for different rules, because the policy is platform-wide and not displayed by the host. Pro tip: if you are targeting peak foliage in Norwich (late September through mid-October), book early and use that grace period as your safety net while you finalize Dartmouth or Killington plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Norwich?
Yes, Norwich is a dog lover's dream and many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Norwich you can book in minutes. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to surface listings where dogs are welcome, then message the host about any size or breed notes. Your pup will love the Gile Mountain trail near Norwich village (a short, leashed hike with a fire tower at the top), the riverside paths around the Montshire Museum grounds, and the dog-friendly sites at nearby Quechee State Park. Pro tip: Vermont prohibits bringing in out-of-state firewood, so buy a bundle locally at the Norwich Farmers Market or Dan and Whit's General Store on Main Street.
vtstateparks.com/quechee.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in Norwich?
Yes, RV delivery in Norwich is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it is a game changer if you are nervous about driving a big rig on I-89 or up Route 5. Many hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer directly to Quechee State Park, Thetford Hill State Park, a Dartmouth area driveway, or a wedding venue in the Upper Valley, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer this and their delivery radius. Pro tip: ask about pickup at the end too, so you can simply hand back the keys after your Norwich RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037817634-Delivery-options-for-your-RV-rentalHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Norwich?
You can cover a lot of New England on an RV road trip from Norwich because you are sitting at the crossroads of I-89 and I-91. Burlington and Lake Champlain are about 95 miles (roughly 1 hour 45 minutes) northwest, Stowe is about 90 miles north, the White Mountains and North Conway, NH are about 75 miles east, Acadia National Park is around 290 miles, and Boston is about 130 miles southeast. Most hosts include a set number of free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you ask. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you are planning a big loop, they can often customize a mileage package for your route.
vtrans.vermont.gov/What are the best campgrounds near Norwich, VT?
You are spoiled for choice with the best campgrounds near Norwich, with options that handle everything from compact campervans to 35-foot Class A motorhomes. Quechee State Park (about 10 miles south) offers wooded sites near the dramatic Quechee Gorge. Thetford Hill State Park (about 15 miles north) is quiet, forested, and great for families. Quechee/Pine Valley KOA Holiday gives you full hookups, a pool, and easy I-89 access. Storrs Pond Recreation Area in nearby Hanover, NH has lakeside sites and a swimming beach. Wilgus State Park along the Connecticut River (about 35 miles south) is a paddler's favorite. Pro tip: Vermont State Parks open reservations 11 months in advance, and foliage weekends sell out quickly, so book early.
vtstateparks.com/When is the best time to take an RV trip in Norwich, Vermont?
Norwich is genuinely a four-season destination, but late June through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Norwich. Summer days run roughly 75 to 82 F with crisp 55 F nights perfect for campfires. Late September through the second week of October typically delivers the strongest fall foliage, the reason the Upper Valley draws visitors from around the globe. May and early June are quieter and cheaper, with wildflowers and fewer bugs once mosquito season eases. Winter rentals do exist for Dartmouth Winter Carnival and Killington ski trips, just confirm the rig has a heated water system. Pro tip: book your Indigenous Peoples' Day (Columbus Day) weekend rig by mid-summer because foliage hosts get snapped up fast.
weather.gov/btv/I have never driven an RV before. Is renting in Norwich a good idea?
Yes, Norwich is one of the friendlier places in New England for first time renting an RV. Hosts on RVezy provide a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, water, propane, slides, and dump procedures, so you are never left guessing. Norwich itself sits on quiet Route 5 with easy on-ramps to I-91, giving newer drivers wide highways instead of tight city streets. Start with a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Norwich if you want extra confidence. Pro tip: choose Delivery and have the host set up at your first campground (Quechee State Park is a popular choice), so your first drive is a relaxed return at the end of the trip rather than a stressed pickup at the start.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Norwich booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. If a slide will not retract at Quechee State Park at 9 p.m. or you hit a pothole on Route 132, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically a phone call or text away for quick questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. RVezy customer support backs all of this up before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving the host's driveway so it is ready when you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I cross into Canada or drive into other states from Norwich?
Interstate travel is wide open. You can take your Norwich RV rental into New Hampshire (just over the Ledyard Bridge), down to Massachusetts and New York, or up to Maine without extra paperwork. Canada crossings into Quebec at Derby Line (about 110 miles north) are possible on some listings, but you must get the host's written approval before booking because insurance and protection terms differ across the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: bring your passport even for a Vermont-only trip, because a quick detour into Stanstead, Quebec for pastries and a covered-bridge photo is a classic Upper Valley bonus run.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Norwich RV trip is straightforward once you know the ranges. Class B campervans average roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches typically run 6 to 9 MPG. Vermont gas prices tend to sit slightly above the national average, so build in a realistic per-gallon estimate when planning. A 300-mile loop from Norwich through Stowe and back in a Class C usually costs around $100 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the larger stations in West Lebanon, NH (across the river) where prices are often a few cents lower and the lots are easier to maneuver than tight Vermont village pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Norwich?
Plan ahead and you will have your pick of the best sites. Vermont State Parks (including Quechee, Thetford Hill, and Silver Lake) open reservations 11 months in advance through the Vermont State Parks system, and foliage weekends from late September through mid-October fill up quickly. Private parks like Quechee/Pine Valley KOA take bookings year-round through their own site and also sell out for Dartmouth Homecoming and Parents Weekend. For summer weekends, aim for 3 to 6 months out; for foliage, book by spring. Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Thursday) almost always have openings even in peak season, so a Tuesday-to-Thursday Norwich RV trip is the savvy local move.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are the local driving conditions like around Norwich?
Driving an RV around Norwich is genuinely pleasant. I-91 and I-89 meet just south of town in White River Junction, giving you wide, well-maintained highways with gentle grades. Route 5 through Norwich village is quiet and scenic. Back roads toward Strafford and Vershire are narrow, hilly, and often dirt, so stick to paved routes with a larger rig. Watch for moose at dawn and dusk north of town, frost heaves in spring, and sudden weather shifts in October. Winter brings snow, ice, and salted roads. Pro tip: avoid the steep, twisty climb on Route 132 with a 30-plus foot motorhome and instead take I-91 to Exit 14 for an easier path toward Thetford and Lake Fairlee.
vtrans.vermont.gov/operations/traveler-infoWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Norwich?
Knowing where to park an RV in Norwich gets easy once you know what each campground offers. Quechee/Pine Valley KOA has full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a pool, and a dump station. Vermont State Parks like Quechee and Thetford Hill provide water spigots, restrooms, hot showers, and a central dump station, but most sites are no-hookup, so you run off your fresh tank and batteries. Storrs Pond in Hanover offers electric sites and lake swimming. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump at the Quechee State Park dump station before heading north, because the next reliable RV dump along I-91 is not until the Wells River area about 45 miles away.
vtstateparks.com/quechee.htmlWhat features and amenities can I expect inside the RV?
You will feel right at home. Most Norwich RV rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, fold-out dinette, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Larger Class A and Class C rigs often add a flat-screen TV, generator, and outdoor speakers. Cell and Wi-Fi service can be spotty in the Upper Valley hills, so do not count on streaming at every campsite. For cold-weather trips, look for listings noting heated holding tanks. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and check the listing photos for the kitchen layout, because Norwich travelers cook in a lot when the Connecticut River sunset is the view.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Norwich%2C%20VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Norwich area offer genuinely useful add-ons that make a family RV trip in Norwich smoother. Common extras include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, bike racks, kayak racks, camp chairs and tables, portable fire pits, and generator use beyond included time. Most pickups happen at the host's home in or near Norwich, but Delivery is widely available for an extra fee that scales with distance. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check the listing for free miles per night and the per-mile rate beyond that. Pro tip: bundle bedding, kitchen, and chairs upfront so you can fly into Lebanon Municipal Airport (about 8 miles away) and roll straight to a stocked rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Norwich%2C%20VermontHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and entirely through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to the host. Your total (rental rate, protection plan, taxes, add-ons, and any delivery fee) is charged through RVezy at booking. A refundable security deposit is held shortly before your trip starts and released back to your card after dropoff once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape with the tanks handled as agreed. To avoid surprises, take a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, follow the fuel and dump instructions in the listing, and stay under your mileage and generator allotments. Pro tip: ask the host for the closest dump and fuel station to their Norwich pickup spot, it saves time and protects your deposit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Norwich during winter for skiing?
Yes, winter RV rentals are a growing option for renting an RV in Norwich, especially with Killington, Saskadena Six (formerly Suicide Six), Dartmouth Skiway, and Mount Sunapee all within roughly an hour. Vermont winters bring temperatures from about 10 to 30 F (with colder snaps below zero), so book a four-season rig with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a reliable propane furnace. Many private parks close seasonally, so confirm winter availability or plan to use a host's driveway with 30-amp service. Pro tip: ask the host to demonstrate the antifreeze procedure and tank heaters at pickup, then keep a heated water hose and extra propane on hand for a worry-free Upper Valley ski week.
