Campgrounds near Poultney, Vermont
Poultney sits in Vermont's Slate Valley in Rutland County, close to a cluster of lakes that anchor the region's camping options. Lake St. Catherine State Park covers 117 acres on the shore of Lake St. Catherine, roughly three miles south of the village on VT Route 30, making it the closest public campground to town.
A short drive north into Castleton and Hubbardton opens up more public land. Bomoseen State Park is a 3,576-acre park in the Taconic Mountains on the shores of Lake Bomoseen, the largest lake entirely within Vermont's borders. Its boundaries encompass more than 2,000 acres surrounding nearby Glen Lake and the forested land that holds Half Moon Pond State Park, a smaller, quieter campground on a wooded pond within the same block of protected land.
For RV renters who want hookups and resort-style amenities, Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday sits near the west shore of Lake Bomoseen. Granite Hill Lodge & Campground, across the New York line near Fort Ann, rounds out the options with a smaller layout for travelers combining a Vermont trip with Lake George and the Adirondacks.
Things to do near Poultney
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake St. Catherine State Park has a swimming area, a boat launch with canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and pedal boats available to rent, and fishing for panfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow and brown trout, yellow perch, and northern pike. Bomoseen State Park adds a sandy family beach and boat rentals on Vermont's biggest in-state lake.
On land, the Slate Valley Trails network draws mountain bikers, and Bomoseen's self-guided Slate History Trail highlights former quarry sites and regional slate industry history. Half Moon Pond State Park is the pick for quiet paddling and short hikes, including the Glen Lake Trail that connects to the Bomoseen campground.
Off-park stops include historic downtown Poultney, Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site, and the Vermont Marble Museum in Proctor, all within a short drive.

Vermont's public campgrounds run on a short season. Lake St. Catherine, Bomoseen, and Half Moon Pond State Parks typically operate from Memorial Day weekend through the Columbus Day weekend in mid-October. Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday extends slightly beyond that window on either end, though its pool and splash-pad amenities run Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Summer is peak. June through early September brings warm days ideal for swimming, boating, and paddling, while the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall offer less crowded conditions. Waterfront sites and lean-tos at the state parks book up early for July and August weekends.
Late September into early October is prime foliage season in the Taconics, with cool nights and thinner crowds. Winter closes the state park campgrounds entirely, though the surrounding land remains open for snowshoeing and ice fishing on the larger lakes.
How to book a campground near Poultney
The three closest public campgrounds, Lake St. Catherine, Bomoseen, and Half Moon Pond, are all part of the Vermont State Parks system and share one reservation platform. There are three ways to make a reservation: book online through the Vermont State Parks reservation website, call the Reservation Call Center at 1-888-409-7579 (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), or, during the operating season, contact the park directly. Camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling daily basis, and same-day reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website or its call center. Granite Hill Lodge & Campground uses its own booking channels; contact the property directly for larger rigs or group sites.
What to expect
State park campgrounds in this area lean rustic. Lake St. Catherine has 48 tent/RV sites, 11 lean-tos, and 1 cabin, with restrooms that have flush toilets, hot and cold running water, and coin-operated showers, plus an RV sanitary station but no hookups. Bomoseen offers 55 tent/RV sites and 10 lean-tos with similar restrooms and a dump station but no hookups. Half Moon Pond adds 52 tent/RV sites, 11 lean-tos, and 5 rental cabins in a wooded setting. Plan on generator use or short stays for larger RVs that need power.
Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday is the option for full hookups, pull-thrus, and a camp store, with 70-foot pull-thru RV sites, deluxe cabins, and tent sites.
Do not bring firewood into Vermont state parks from outside the state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated, with a label showing USDA or state agriculture department certification. Black bears are present in the surrounding woods, so store food securely.

Booking is genuinely low-risk because RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy for every reservation, not individual hosts. The policy includes a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and after that, the refund amount depends on how far ahead of your trip start date you cancel. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. You'll see the exact policy details on the checkout page before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best lakeside rigs for foliage season, knowing the grace-period window has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Poultney?
Absolutely, and Poultney is a wonderfully dog-friendly basecamp. Once you're here, leashed dogs are welcome throughout Lake St. Catherine State Park (except the sandy swimming beaches), on the 19.8-mile Delaware and Hudson Rail Trail, and on most Slate Valley Trails routes. Whaleback Vineyard's outdoor patio is also famously easygoing about well-behaved dogs. Pro tip: pack a towel and a long lead so Fido can splash at the campers' beach grassy area at Lake St. Catherine after a hike on the Big Trees Trail.
vtstateparks.com/discover.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Poultney?
Yes, RV delivery in Poultney is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts in the Rutland County area will drive the RV directly to Lake St. Catherine State Park, Half Moon Pond State Park, or a private campground, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when searching listings to see hosts who offer this service along with their per-mile delivery fee. This is the secret weapon for first-time renters and families flying into Albany International Airport (ALB), about 75 minutes south, who'd rather skip the drive entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Poultney,VermontHow far can I drive from Poultney, and is there an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
You can absolutely build a great Poultney VT RV trip around the included mileage on most listings, and yes, some hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage. That easily covers favorites like Lake George, NY (45 minutes west), Manchester, VT and the outlet shops (50 minutes south), Killington Resort (45 minutes northeast), Woodstock, VT (75 minutes east), and Stowe (about 2 hours north). For longer loops through the White Mountains or down to the Berkshires, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host before booking to negotiate a higher cap.

vtstateparks.com/lake-st-catherine.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Poultney, VT in an RV?
Poultney is genuinely a four-season destination, but the sweet spot for an RV trip is late May through mid-October. Summer highs run a comfortable 75 to 82°F with cool 55°F nights perfect for campfires. Late September into the first week of October is peak foliage season, when the Taconic and Green Mountain hillsides explode in red, orange, and gold, this is the most magical (and most booked) window. Winters drop to 10 to 28°F with heavy snow, so most state-park campgrounds close after Columbus Day and reopen the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Pro tip: book a foliage trip 4 to 6 months out for the best rig selection and the lowest rates.
weather.gov/btv/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in rural Vermont?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV travelers love Poultney specifically because the roads here are calm, scenic, and forgiving compared to busy interstates. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, water systems, slide-outs, generator, and dump procedure, and you can text them anytime during the trip. VT Route 30, VT Route 31, and US Route 4 are the main local routes, all well-paved and easy to navigate. Stick to under 60 mph, leave extra braking distance on the rolling hills, and you'll feel like a pro by your second day. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop before heading to the campground.
vtrans.vermont.gov/What happens if I have a breakdown during my Poultney RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on VT Route 30 or a dead battery at a Slate Valley trailhead is just a phone call away from help. Roadside will dispatch a tow, jump-start, tire change, or fuel delivery, whichever you need. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions about quirky switches or appliances, and RVezy customer support is on standby before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway so it's one tap away.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Poultney RV rental into New York or across the Canadian border?
A Poultney RV trip is perfectly positioned for multi-state adventures. You're 5 minutes from the New York state line, 45 minutes from Lake George, and about 3.5 hours from the Adirondack High Peaks, all clearly allowed on RVezy bookings. Crossing into Canada (Montreal is about 3.5 hours north via I-89) is often allowed but depends on the specific host and protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm and bring a passport for every traveler. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a classic loop from Poultney runs through the Adirondacks, into Vermont via the Lake Champlain ferry, and back down VT Route 22A.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Poultney?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV road trip from Poultney, so plan smart and you'll save real money. Vermont gas typically runs about $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon, slightly higher than the national average. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck average 10 to 14 MPG, Class C motorhomes do 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A coaches land around 6 to 9 MPG. A round trip from Poultney to Stowe (240 miles) will run roughly $60 to $100 in fuel for a typical Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Fair Haven or Rutland where prices tend to be a few cents lower than the small village stations along VT Route 30.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Poultney?
Lock in your campsite early and the rest of the trip falls into place. Vermont State Parks (including Lake St. Catherine, Half Moon Pond, and Bomoseen) open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system, and prime weekends sell out fast, especially Fourth of July, Labor Day, and the last two weekends of September for foliage. Aim to book 4 to 6 months ahead for summer, and as early as January for fall color. Private parks like Lake George RV Park in New York also fill up by spring. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Tuesday) are dramatically easier to score and often $10 to $20 cheaper per night.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Poultney?
Driving around Poultney is delightfully low-stress compared to most RV destinations. Traffic is light, speed limits stay between 35 and 50 mph on most rural routes, and the biggest hazards are slow-moving farm equipment, the occasional white-tailed deer at dusk, and frost heaves in early spring. VT Route 30 along Lake St. Catherine has gentle curves and is fully RV-friendly. Avoid taking large rigs onto unpaved Class 4 town roads (your host can flag which to avoid). Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, so summer and fall are the easiest seasons to drive. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps before heading into Slate Valley, cell service can dip in the hollows.
vtrans.vermont.gov/operations/maintenanceWhat amenities do campgrounds near Poultney offer?
Campgrounds near Poultney range from rustic-charming to full-service. Lake St. Catherine State Park offers water spigots throughout the campground, a dump station, coin-operated hot showers, flush toilets, and a sandy swim beach, but no individual electric or sewer hookups, so plan to dry camp using your RV's freshwater tank and battery (or run the generator during permitted hours). Bomoseen and Half Moon Pond are similar. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), head 45 minutes west to Lake George RV Park or 30 minutes north to Country Village Campground in Leicester. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank and dump tanks before leaving any state park, the next dump station can be 20+ miles away.
vtstateparks.com/lake-st-catherine.htmlWhat's actually inside a typical motorhome rental in Poultney?
You'll be impressed by how dialed-in a motorhome rental in Poultney arrives. Most RVs on RVezy come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, dinette and/or sofa that converts to extra sleeping space, a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and cookware, a full bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a propane furnace, and a TV. Many include a generator for boondocking at Lake St. Catherine, outdoor speakers, awnings, and even outdoor kitchens. Every passenger gets a seatbelt-equipped seat, and hosts typically provide linens, towels, and basic kitchenware as included or optional add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list for a Wi-Fi hotspot, it's a lifesaver in the spotty-coverage hollows around Slate Valley.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Poultney,VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect for a campervan rental Poultney trip?
A campervan rental Poultney trip is incredibly easy to customize. Hosts commonly offer add-ons like bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bikes or kayaks ($25 to $50/day), portable grills, generators, and Starlink-style Wi-Fi. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Poultney, Castleton, Rutland, or Fair Haven, with delivery available for an extra fee (commonly $2 to $4 per mile round-trip). Mileage policies vary, so review the daily allowance, per-mile overage rate, and any generator-hour limits on the listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kayak add-on and have everything waiting for you lakeside at Lake St. Catherine, it's the ultimate no-hassle Vermont weekend.
vermontvacation.com/places-to-visit/downtowns/poultney/How does payment and the security deposit work on an RV rental in Poultney, VT?
Payment is refreshingly simple. When you book an RV rental in Poultney, VT through RVezy, you pay securely via the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after your trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid any deposit issues, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, empty the tanks if required, refill propane and fuel to the agreed level, and return the rig on time. Pro tip: keep all trip-related receipts and messages in the RVezy chat so there's a clear paper trail.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Poultney during the winter for snow trips?
Yes, and a winter RV adventure in Poultney is genuinely special. While most Vermont State Park campgrounds close after Indigenous Peoples' Day / Columbus Day weekend, several private campgrounds and host driveways stay open year-round, and Killington Resort (about 45 minutes northeast) plus Pico Mountain make Poultney a great basecamp for ski trips. Filter RVezy listings for four-season rigs with heated and enclosed holding tanks, an Arctic package, and reliable propane furnaces, and confirm with the host that the unit is winterized for sub-freezing use. You'll want a campground with shore power (30/50-amp electric) so you can run electric heaters and keep tanks from freezing. Pro tip: ice fishing on Lake St. Catherine in mid-winter is a bucket-list Vermont experience.
