Campgrounds near Stowe, Vermont
Stowe sits on the east flank of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak, and most nearby camping falls inside the surrounding Mount Mansfield State Forest. The Vermont State Parks system runs the closest developed campgrounds, and none of them offer water, sewer, or electric hookups.
The five closest options give RV travelers a range of setups. Little River State Park, on Waterbury Reservoir, has drinking water, firewood for sale, and a sanitary dump station but no hookups. Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground sits below the pass on Route 108 and, because the road is narrow, has very few sites that can accommodate RVs. Underhill State Park is walk-in only, closer to a backcountry experience than a typical drive-in campground. Elmore State Park lies a short drive north on Lake Elmore, and privately run Mountain View Campground in Morrisville rounds out the local list.
Mountain View Campground offers RV sites with full hookups, making it the practical choice for RV travelers who want power, water, and sewer.
Things to do near Stowe
The area is built around Mount Mansfield and the Green Mountains, and the parks are best known for their hiking. Four trails lead to the summit ridge of Mt. Mansfield from Underhill State Park, with the Sunset Ridge Trail, about 3 miles to the summit, being the most popular. Vermont's Long Trail traverses the summit ridge, and with several trails from the other side of the mountain many loops are possible.
Water recreation centers on Waterbury Reservoir at Little River State Park, with swimming, boating, and angling for bass and trout. Miles of hiking and mountain bike trails wind through the adjacent Mt. Mansfield State Forest.
Off-trail, families cluster around Stowe village attractions: the Ben & Jerry's factory tour in nearby Waterbury, the Stowe Mountain Resort gondola, and the scenic drive through Smugglers' Notch on Route 108 when the road is open.

27° / 10°F 80 mmState park campgrounds closed; Notch Road shut for winter.
The Vermont State Parks operating window is short. Most local campgrounds open the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and close the second Monday in October, and Underhill State Park runs exactly that schedule. Off-season camping (hike-in, no services) is unavailable from April 1 through October 31 so staff can carry out maintenance during the shoulder seasons.
Summer is peak. July and August fill weekends fastest, and lakefront lean-tos at Little River are booked months out. Early June brings black flies in the woods, and shoulder-season nights can drop near freezing.
Fall foliage in late September and early October is the second peak, with hardwoods on Mt. Mansfield turning early. After the second Monday in October, state park campgrounds close for the season. VT Route 108 through Smugglers' Notch between Stowe and Jeffersonville also closes for the winter, typically from mid-October to mid-May, and cannot be plowed.
How to book campgrounds near Stowe
State park sites are reserved through a single system. There are three ways to make a reservation: the online reservation website, the Reservation Call Center at 1-888-409-7579 (Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm), or, during the operating season, by calling the park directly. Camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, and same-day reservations are accepted until 2 pm.
Minimum-stay rules apply system-wide. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week. Remote sites at Waterbury Reservoir still require a two-night minimum. For RVs, filter by site length on the interactive campground map, since many Stowe-area sites cannot handle a large motorhome. Private campgrounds such as Mountain View book directly through the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rustic. Vermont State Park campgrounds in this area do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups. Restrooms at most parks have flush toilets and coin- or token-operated hot showers, though Underhill is more primitive with pit toilets and no showers. Dump stations are available at the larger parks such as Little River. Mountain View Campground is the local exception with full hookups.
RV size and access are the biggest planning issues. All campsites at Underhill are walk-in and cannot be reached by vehicle, and Smugglers' Notch State Park has very few sites that can accommodate RVs because Route 108 north of the campground is narrow and winding. Vermont law prohibits single vehicles over 40 feet, or combination vehicles over 45 feet, from operating on the Smugglers' Notch segment of VT Route 108.
Do not bring firewood into Vermont state parks from out of state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated with USDA or state agriculture department certification. Buy firewood on site or nearby.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Stowe, VT
How much does an RV rental in Stowe, VT typically cost?
Great news: an RV rental in Stowe is more affordable than you might expect, especially when you split costs with family or friends. On RVezy, travel trailers near Stowe generally start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Peak foliage weeks in late September and early October are the priciest, so booking 3 to 6 months out locks in better rates. Looking for a cheap RV rental Stowe option? Travel trailers (with a tow vehicle) and small campervans deliver the best value. Pro tip: midweek stays in June or August often beat weekend foliage rates by 20% or more.
gostowe.com/blog-know-before-you-goDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Stowe, Vermont?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Stowe. Vermont does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for non-commercial motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans used for personal travel. To book on RVezy, you'll need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and the platform verifies your ID during booking, so there's nothing extra to chase down at the DMV. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to enjoy the Green Mountains. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork really is.
dmv.vermont.gov/licenses/types-of-licenses-ids/drivers-licenseWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my Stowe RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you hit Route 100. Every RV rental in Stowe booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan that covers damage to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance for flat tires, lockouts, battery issues, and more. During checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, whether you're a first-timer taking a campervan rental Stowe weekend or a family booking a Class C for a week at Smugglers' Notch State Park. This provides real financial peace of mind so you can focus on Mount Mansfield views, not worst-case scenarios. Pro tip: review the protection summary before booking so you know exactly what's included.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Stowe RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes cancellations straightforward. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, plus tiered refunds depending on how far out from your trip you cancel. There are also added protections for situations like natural disasters, which matters in Vermont where early-season snowstorms or fall storm remnants occasionally affect travel. You don't need to negotiate with the host; RVezy handles it. Pro tip: book early to lock in your foliage-week dates with confidence, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room to finalize plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Stowe?
Absolutely, Stowe is one of the most dog-friendly towns in New England, and plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Stowe options. Just filter by 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy to see listings that welcome your pup, and message the host if you have a large breed or multiple pets. Once you're here, dogs are allowed at all Vermont State Park campgrounds (including Smugglers' Notch and Little River) for a small per-night fee, and the 5.5-mile paved Stowe Recreation Path is leashed-dog heaven. Trapp Family Lodge trails and many local breweries like The Alchemist also welcome leashed pups. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy paws after Bingham Falls.
vtstateparks.com/campingCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in Stowe?
Yes, RV delivery Stowe is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, and many local hosts offer it. They'll drop the RV at your campsite at Smugglers' Notch State Park, Gold Brook Campground, or a private driveway off Mountain Road, then walk you through every system from the propane stove to the awning. This is perfect if it's your first time renting an RV or if you'd rather skip the drive up I-89 from Burlington. Delivery fees vary by distance, so message the host with your destination to get a quote. Pro tip: pair delivery with a stationary base camp near Stowe Village for a stress-free first RV experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stowe%2C%20VermontHow far can I travel on a Stowe RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of road to explore from Stowe. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer unlimited mileage RV rental options, ideal for longer loops through New England. Popular drives from Stowe include Burlington and Lake Champlain (about 35 miles west), the White Mountains and Franconia Notch in New Hampshire (roughly 90 miles east), Montreal (about 140 miles north), Acadia National Park in Maine (around 260 miles east), and Boston (about 200 miles south). Always check the daily mileage allowance on the listing and message the host if you're planning a big loop. Pro tip: filter by unlimited mileage to compare your best options upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stowe%2C%20VermontWhere are the best campgrounds near Stowe for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Stowe. Top picks include Smugglers' Notch State Park (34 sites right on scenic Route 108, mid-May to mid-October), Little River State Park in nearby Waterbury (81 tent/trailer sites on the Waterbury Reservoir with a dump station and hot showers), Gold Brook Campground (79 sites with 30 full hookups right on Waterbury Road), Mountain View Campground in Morrisville (riverside full-hookup sites, 15 minutes from Stowe Village), and Elmore State Park (lakeside camping 20 minutes north). Reserve through Vermont State Parks up to 11 months in advance. Pro tip: Little River puts you 20 minutes from the Ben & Jerry's factory tour in Waterbury.
vtstateparks.com/campingWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Stowe?
Stowe truly is a four-season destination, but for RV travel, late May through mid-October is the sweet spot when state park campgrounds are open. June brings comfortable 70s°F highs, fewer crowds, and lush green mountains. July and August are peak summer (highs around 80°F, lows in the 60s) with festivals, swimming holes, and full farm stands. Late September through mid-October is legendary fall foliage season, with peak color typically the last week of September through the first two weeks of October, plus crisp 50s to 60s°F days. Pro tip: book foliage-season RV rentals 4 to 6 months ahead, August is the locals' secret for great weather and lighter crowds.
gostowe.com/blog-know-before-you-goCan I rent an RV in Stowe in the winter for a ski trip?
Winter RV rentals near Stowe are possible and can be a unique base for skiing Stowe Mountain Resort or Smugglers' Notch. Some RVezy hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces designed for Vermont's cold (January highs around 27F, nights often below 10F). Most state park campgrounds close from late October to mid-May, but a few private RV parks offer winter sites with shore power, and some hosts will deliver and set up the RV at a private property near the slopes. Message the host directly to confirm winter readiness. Pro tip: ask about a heated water hose and skirting if you're planning multiple nights below freezing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stowe%2C%20VermontI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on Stowe's roads?
You've got this, and Stowe is genuinely friendly for first-timers. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the generator, and dumping, so you're never figuring it out alone. Main roads like Route 100 and Mountain Road (Route 108 south of the village) are well-maintained and easy to navigate. The one stretch to know: Smugglers' Notch (Route 108 north over the pass) closes to large vehicles in winter and is too tight for big motorhomes year-round, so you'll route around via Jeffersonville. Pro tip: choose a campervan or smaller Class C for first time renting an RV in mountainous terrain, and message your host with any pre-trip questions.
vtrans.vermont.gov/highwayWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You're not on your own, ever. Every RV rental in Stowe Vermont booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in your protection plan. If you get a flat near Waterbury, run out of propane at Smugglers' Notch State Park, or lock the keys in the rig at the Ben & Jerry's parking lot, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a text away for quick troubleshooting, like how to reset a GFCI outlet. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip for anything bigger. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Stowe RV rental across the border to Canada?
A cross-border RV road trip from Stowe to Montreal or Quebec City is doable, and many hosts allow it with advance approval. Stowe sits about 90 minutes from the Highgate Springs border crossing, making Montreal (about 140 miles) a popular add-on. Message the host before booking to confirm Canada travel is allowed and that insurance and protection extend across the border. Important: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not apply there. Bring your passport (or Enhanced Driver's License) and any pet vaccination records if you're bringing your dog. Pro tip: a midweek Montreal detour pairs beautifully with a Stowe RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for a Stowe RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you'd think. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for a campervan (Class B), and 12 to 16 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer. Vermont gas prices typically run a bit above the national average; budget around $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon. From Stowe, a tank usually covers a loop to Burlington, Lake Champlain, and back with room to spare. Pro tip: fill up in Waterbury or Morrisville rather than directly in Stowe Village, where prices skew tourist-high, and the climb up Route 108 burns fuel faster than flat highway miles.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Stowe?
Book early and you'll get exactly the spot you want. Vermont State Parks open reservations on a rolling 11-month window at 9 a.m. daily through the official ReserveAmerica-powered system, so foliage weekends at Smugglers' Notch and Little River vanish fast. For peak fall (late September to mid-October), reserve 6 to 11 months ahead. Summer weekends typically need 2 to 4 months. Private parks like Gold Brook and Mountain View also fill quickly. Same-day reservations are allowed until 2 p.m. if space remains. Pro tip: if your dream site is sold out, set up an alert tool, cancellations happen often, especially within the 10-day refund cutoff.
vtstateparks.com/reservationsWhat are Stowe's local driving conditions like for an RV?
Stowe's roads are scenic and manageable, with a few smart things to know. Route 100 and Mountain Road (Route 108 south of the village) are wide, well-paved, and RV-friendly. The big caveat: Route 108 through Smugglers' Notch between Stowe and Jeffersonville is closed to trucks, buses, and large RVs year-round, with hairpin turns and tight rock walls; it also closes seasonally in winter. Go around via Route 15 instead. Watch for moose at dawn and dusk on rural roads, sudden mountain showers in summer, and black ice in late fall. Pro tip: I-89 is the easy highway route from Burlington (BTV airport) to Waterbury Exit 10, then 10 miles north on Route 100 into Stowe.
vtrans.vermont.gov/highwayWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Stowe?
Stowe-area campgrounds offer the full range, from rustic state parks to full-hookup private resorts. Vermont State Parks like Smugglers' Notch and Little River provide drive-in sites, picnic tables, fire rings, potable water spigots, hot showers, and dump stations, but most don't have individual electric or sewer hookups. Private parks such as Gold Brook Campground and Mountain View Campground offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Dump stations are available at Little River State Park and most private parks for a small fee. Pro tip: fill fresh water before heading to a state park site, and bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose plus a basic sewer kit, your host usually provides these, but confirm at pickup.
vtstateparks.com/campingWhat's typically included inside a motorhome rental in Stowe?
Stowe motorhome rental options come stocked and ready for adventure. Most RVs on RVezy include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or sofa beds, a kitchen with fridge, propane stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace and AC), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi varies, and cell service is solid in Stowe Village but spotty in Smugglers' Notch and parts of the Worcester Range. Pro tip: each listing has a detailed amenities checklist, so filter by sleeps 6 or generator to match your family RV trip Stowe needs perfectly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stowe%2C%20VermontWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Stowe RV rental?
Hosts offer thoughtful add-ons to make your trip easier. Popular options include delivery and setup (often priced per mile from the host's location), linen and kitchen packages, generator hours for off-grid camping, bike racks, kayak racks, propane refills, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the greater Stowe, Morrisville, or Waterbury area, with a 30 to 60-minute orientation. Drop-off is at the same location unless you've arranged otherwise. Mileage policies vary, some hosts include 100 free miles per day, others offer unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a linen package for a true just show up Stowe getaway.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stowe%2C%20VermontHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy directly using a credit card, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by RV) before your trip and released after drop-off, assuming the rig is returned in the same condition. Your trip cost is charged through RVezy's secure checkout. To avoid issues: do a thorough walkaround with photos at both pickup and return, follow the host's fuel and propane policy, and stay within your mileage allowance (or pre-pay extra miles). Pro tip: keeping the RV clean and emptying the tanks before return is the easiest way to get your full deposit back fast after your Stowe adventure.
