Windsor camping overview
Windsor sits in the Connecticut River Valley in eastern Vermont, at the base of 3,144-foot Mount Ascutney. The town is a practical base for RV travelers who want river access, mountain hiking, and quick trips into the Upper Valley communities of Woodstock, Quechee, and Hanover, New Hampshire. Most nearby campgrounds are state-run and cluster along the river or on the flanks of Ascutney itself.
Mount Ascutney State Park is the closest option, with wooded tent and RV loops at the mountain's base and access to more than 12 miles of hiking trails and a paved auto road to a summit observation tower. Wilgus State Park sits directly on the Connecticut River just south of Windsor and is the only developed state park on the Vermont shore of that river. Quechee State Park Camping, about 20 minutes north, puts campers within walking distance of Vermont's deepest gorge.
Private options fill in the gaps. Running Bear Camping Area and Crown Point Camping Area offer full-service family sites with pools, playgrounds, and hookups that the state parks do not provide.
Things to do around Windsor
Hiking is the main draw at Mount Ascutney State Park, where four trailheads and roughly 12 miles of trail climb to the summit, and a 25-foot observation tower delivers views into Vermont and New Hampshire. A 3-mile mountain biking loop built by the Vermont Mountain Bike Association starts inside the park and is designed for all skill levels. The park also has two authorized hang gliding launches at Brownsville Rock and South Peak.
On the water, Wilgus State Park offers a hand-carry boat launch on the Connecticut River and seasonal canoe and kayak rentals through an on-site concessionaire. The river section near the park is calm and works well for beginner paddlers.
Day trips include the Quechee Gorge rim trails, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, Harpoon Brewery, and Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park across the river in Cornish, New Hampshire.

Vermont's camping season is short. Most Vermont State Parks operate from Memorial Day through the second Monday in October, and Wilgus State Park is typically the first in the system to open, from the second weekend in May. Mount Ascutney runs from the third weekend in May through the third weekend in October. Outside these windows, park roads and facilities are closed and water is shut off.
Summer brings warm days, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak demand. July and August weekends fill quickly across the Upper Valley parks. Blackflies and mosquitoes peak from late May into June.
Fall is the marquee season. Foliage typically peaks from the last week of September through mid-October along the Ascutney corridor, and campgrounds book out well in advance for those weekends. Winter closes the state parks to camping, though hiking, snowshoeing, and ice climbing continue on Ascutney's trails, and the main trailhead parking lots are plowed.
How to book campgrounds near Windsor
The three closest state parks, Mount Ascutney, Wilgus, and Quechee, all reserve through the Vermont State Parks system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, either online, through the reservation call center at 1-888-409-7579 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or directly with the park during the operating season. Same-day reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum. One-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week. None of the three state parks offer electric, water, or sewer hookups, but each has a sanitary dump station.
For hookups, private grounds such as Running Bear Camping Area and Crown Point Camping Area book directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect at Windsor campgrounds
Sites at the nearby state parks are wooded, well spaced, and generally level, with a fire ring and picnic table at each. Restrooms have flush toilets and coin or token-operated hot showers. There are no hookups at Mount Ascutney State Park, Wilgus State Park, or Quechee State Park Camping, so RVs should arrive with full water tanks and empty holding tanks. Each park has a sanitary dump station.
Mount Ascutney sites accept RVs up to about 30 feet, and highway noise from I-91 and Route 5 reaches parts of both Ascutney and Wilgus. Cell service is spotty in the hills west of I-91.
Vermont restricts bringing untreated firewood from out of state, so buy it on site or bring bundles that are USDA heat-treated and labeled. Black bears are active in the area, so store food inside the RV overnight.

vtstateparks.com/wilgus.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Windsor, VT?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Windsor, with the legendary fall foliage window from late September to mid-October being the absolute showstopper. Summer (June to August) brings warm days of 75 to 85°F and cool nights perfect for campfires, while spring offers blooming wildflowers and quiet trails on Mount Ascutney. Most Vermont State Parks operate from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Winter RV trips are possible too if you book a four-season rig with heated tanks, since Windsor sees snow from December through March. Pro tip: for foliage, target the last week of September through the first week of October and book your rental at least three months in advance.
weather.gov/btv/I have never driven an RV before. Is renting in Windsor, VT a good idea for first-timers?
Windsor is one of the friendliest spots in New England for first time renting an RV. The roads here (Route 5, Route 12, and I-91) are wide, well-paved, and far less congested than Boston or NYC traffic. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, dumping, and driving tips, and they are a text away during your trip. If you are nervous, choose a Class B campervan or small Class C, both easy to handle and park at Mount Ascutney or Wilgus State Park. Even better, opt for delivery so you skip the drive entirely and arrive to a fully set-up campsite. Most renters tell us their nerves vanish within an hour of being on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my RV rental in Windsor, VT?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Windsor, VT booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one call away whether you are on the Mount Ascutney Parkway or cruising Route 100 near Killington. Common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing are handled by professional dispatch. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app to walk you through quick fixes (most breakdowns turn out to be a tripped GFCI or an empty propane tank). RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip, so you are never on your own.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Windsor RV rental across the border into Canada or to other states?
Yes, interstate travel is totally doable. Windsor's location on I-91 puts you 90 minutes from the Canadian border and within easy reach of New Hampshire (just cross the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge), Massachusetts, Maine, and New York. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance/protection package selected, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular multi-state routes include the New England fall foliage loop (VT, NH, ME) and the Lake Champlain crossing into the Adirondacks. Always bring your passport if you're heading to Quebec, and remember that propane tanks should be turned off at border crossings.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat's the fuel cost and MPG I should budget for my Windsor RV trip?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays manageable on any Vermont RV trip. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 MPG. Vermont gas prices tend to run slightly above the national average, so as of recent trends expect around $3.20 to $3.70 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel. Fill up in West Lebanon, NH (just across the river) where there's no state sales tax on most goods and gas is often cheaper. Pro tip: most Vermont destinations from Windsor are under 100 miles, so a single tank can easily cover a long weekend.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Windsor, VT?
For peak summer weekends and especially fall foliage (late September to mid-October), book Vermont State Park campgrounds 4 to 6 months ahead through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system. Mount Ascutney, Wilgus, and Quechee State Parks fill up fastest. Private campgrounds like Quechee/Pine Valley KOA and Getaway Mountain Campground take reservations a year out for prime weekends. For weekday or shoulder-season trips (May, early June, late October), you can often book just a week or two ahead. Pro tip: Sunday-through-Thursday stays are far easier to score and many private campgrounds offer midweek discounts, making your Vermont RV trip even more affordable.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Windsor, Vermont?
Driving an RV around Windsor is genuinely pleasant. Interstate 91 runs right through town with gentle grades and wide lanes, and Route 5 along the Connecticut River is flat and scenic. Watch for two things: the climb up Mount Ascutney Parkway has a 12% grade in spots (use low gear going up and down), and Vermont's covered bridges have strict weight and height limits, so the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge is not RV-passable. Most rural roads have shoulders narrow enough that you'll want to take your time. Winter brings snow and ice from December to March, so if you're traveling then, choose a host who provides winter tires and pack tire chains just in case.
511vt.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Windsor, VT?
Local campgrounds offer everything from rustic to resort-style. Vermont State Parks like Mount Ascutney and Wilgus provide flush toilets, hot showers (small fee), picnic tables, fire rings, and a sanitary dump station, though no individual site hookups. Private parks like Quechee/Pine Valley KOA deliver full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a pool, laundry, and a dog park. For dumping and fresh water between trips, the Mount Ascutney State Park dump station is open mid-May to mid-October, and most VT State Parks allow non-campers to dump for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground since fill stations along Route 5 are limited.
vtstateparks.com/ascutney.htmlWhat is inside a typical RV rental in Windsor, VT?
Even modest rigs come well equipped for a comfortable Windsor RV trip. Expect a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in all but the smallest campervans); sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig; climate control with furnace and air conditioning; and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many hosts include bonus extras like outdoor chairs, a generator for off-grid stays, TVs, and even Wi-Fi hotspots. Pro tip: read the listing amenity list carefully and message the host with any must-haves, since many hosts include items like bedding and kitchen kits at no extra charge.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Windsor%2C%20VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for RV rentals in Windsor?
Hosts in the Windsor area offer fantastic add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include kayaks and paddleboards (perfect for the Connecticut River), bike racks, generators, propane fire pits, camp kitchen kits, linens and towels, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Windsor, Hartland, or White River Junction, but many offer delivery to Mount Ascutney State Park, Wilgus, or your rental cabin for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary by listing (look for unlimited mileage RV rental options if you're planning a longer New England loop). Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than asking on pickup day, since some items have limited inventory during peak foliage season.
windsorvt.org/1206/AttractionsHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Windsor, VT?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You pay the full rental cost (plus any add-ons and the protection plan you select) at booking via credit card. A refundable security deposit is authorized on your card shortly before pickup; the exact amount is set by the host and shown on the listing. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition (clean, fueled, and tanks emptied per host instructions), the deposit is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff to keep any deposit conversation effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Windsor, VT?
In Vermont, overnight RV parking is generally restricted to designated campgrounds and a few private lots; you cannot pull off on the roadside in town and sleep. The closest legal options near Windsor are Mount Ascutney State Park (about 2 miles south), Wilgus State Park on the Connecticut River (about 6 miles south in Ascutney), and the Quechee/Pine Valley KOA (about 25 minutes north). Some retailers across the river in West Lebanon, NH may permit overnight RV stays with manager permission, which is handy on a travel day; always ask first. Vermont State Parks do not allow overnight parking outside official campsites. Pro tip: book at least one campground night per stop to enjoy hookups, showers, and a worry-free sleep.
