Campgrounds and RV parks near Accomac, VA

The main draw is Assateague Island, a barrier island shared by Maryland and Virginia where wild ponies roam alongside Atlantic beaches, marshlands, maritime forests, and dunes. On the Virginia side, visitors reach the beach and refuge trails via Chincoteague Island. Favorite activities include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing, along with crabbing, clamming, and kayaking in the back bays. Wildlife viewing is a highlight. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge offers auto tours, boardwalks, and lighthouse access, with regular sightings of ponies, sika deer, and shorebirds. Families staying at Tom's Cove Park or Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay can bike into the refuge, while guests at Tall Pines Harbor Waterfront Campground and Virginia Landing RV Campground have direct access to the bay for paddling and fishing.

Peak season on the Eastern Shore runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when beaches, refuge trails, and campgrounds see the heaviest use. The last week of July is especially busy: the annual Chincoteague pony swim and auction draws large crowds, and sites at Tom's Cove Park, Trails End Campground Resort, and Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay typically sell out months ahead. Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable, with mild days, fewer biting insects, and strong bird migration through the refuge. Many private parks operate on a seasonal calendar, so travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm opening dates directly with the operator. Winter is the slowest stretch. Some private campgrounds close, though the Assateague Island National Seashore campground is open year-round, with Oceanside sites operating on a first-come, first-served basis from November 16 through March 14. Coastal storms and nor'easters can bring flooding to low-lying roads on the shore.

Sites near Accomac range from full-hookup RV resorts with pools and clubhouses to simpler waterfront parks focused on fishing and paddling. Cell service is generally reliable on the mainland and on Chincoteague, but can drop inside the refuge and along remote stretches of the barrier islands. Roads are flat and easy to tow on, though the causeway to Chincoteague can back up on summer weekends. Expect mosquitoes, greenhead flies, and ticks from late spring through early fall, especially near marsh edges. Bring insect repellent, sun protection, and reef-safe sunscreen for beach days. Wild ponies on Assateague and Chincoteague are protected; visitors are required to keep a safe distance and never feed them.
