Camping near Chincoteague, Virginia
Chincoteague sits on Virginia's Eastern Shore, a small island town connected by causeway to the mainland and separated from Assateague Island by a narrow channel. It functions as the primary base for visiting Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which protects beach, dune, marsh, and maritime forest habitats on the Virginia end of Assateague Island. RV renters use the town as a launch point for the refuge, the Assateague Lighthouse, and the beach at Tom's Cove.
Campgrounds cluster on and just off the island. Jellystone Park Chincoteague Island and Tom's Cove Park sit directly on Chincoteague, within a short drive of the refuge entrance. Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay offers full-hookup RV sites on the bay side. Trails End Campground Resort and Shad Landing at Pocomoke River State Park lie across the Maryland line, with Shad Landing under an hour south of Chincoteague.
The campgrounds in this area sit at sea level with minimal elevation changes, making the terrain accessible for most campers. Expect flat, sandy sites, mosquitoes in warm months, and strong ocean influence on weather.
Things to do around Chincoteague
The main draw is wildlife viewing. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is renowned for its diverse bird habitat where more than 320 species are known to use the refuge regularly during migration, and it has at least 100 species present at any given time. Fifteen miles of hiking trails and a pristine beach offer opportunities to seek out the bird species that use the refuge throughout the year. The Woodland Trail has a viewing overlook toward pony habitat, and the Assateague Lighthouse is open to visitors seasonally.
Beach access is at Tom's Cove, with swimming, surfcasting, and shell collecting. Fishing, crabbing, and clamming are permitted in designated areas of the refuge. Kayak and paddleboard rentals operate from the town waterfront, and scenic boat tours run in season for closer pony viewing.
In town, the Museum of Chincoteague Island covers pony penning history, and the Island Creamery is a fixture on Maddox Boulevard.

Summer is peak season. During summer and holidays, campsites around Chincoteague fill quickly and require booking well ahead of time. The last week of July draws the largest crowds for Pony Penning: the annual event is held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, with the swim on Wednesday and the pony auction on Thursday. RV renters targeting that week should reserve months in advance.
Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons most experienced visitors prefer, with milder temperatures that many campers find more comfortable than summer heat. Birding is strong in these seasons: shorebird concentrations during fall migration are so great that Chincoteague ranks as an important stopover area for migrating birds in the U.S. east of the Rockies, and in spring, horseshoe crab eggs attract migrating shorebirds along the shoreline.
Winter is quiet and cold, with strong wind off the Atlantic. Some private campground loops and seasonal services shut down, though the refuge itself stays open year-round for day use.
Booking a campsite near Chincoteague
Private campgrounds on the island, including Jellystone Park Chincoteague Island, Tom's Cove Park, and Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Trails End Campground Resort also books through its own site. Book Pony Penning week and holiday weekends as far ahead as possible; many regulars rebook a year out.
Shad Landing at Pocomoke River State Park uses the Maryland state system. Reservations are available via parkreservations.maryland.gov or 1-888-432-2267. Acorn Trail, Robin's Nest, and Water's Edge loops operate year-round, while Blue Heron, Deer Run, and Fox Den have seasonal availability from spring through fall. RVs up to 50 feet are permitted, though reviewers note that anything over 35 feet may have difficulty maneuvering into the tighter spots.
What to expect on an RV trip to Chincoteague
The drive onto the island crosses a causeway and a drawbridge, so plan for occasional short delays. Once on the island, roads are narrow but manageable for standard rental RVs. Grocery, propane, and dump station access is available in town.
Insects are the main comfort issue. Bring repellent, especially for evening walks and the refuge trails. Coastal storms can hit hard, so pack for rain even when the forecast looks clear. Atlantic hurricane season runs through fall and can force closures. Ocean breezes at bayside and oceanside campgrounds help mitigate both heat and insects.
Keep distance from wildlife. The ponies are not domestic animals, and feeding or approaching them is prohibited on the refuge.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Chincoteague, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Chincoteague?
RV rental in Chincoteague is affordable, especially outside the peak summer pony season. Expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers and pop-ups, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $250+ for larger Class A rigs. Cheap RV rental Chincoteague options are easiest to find on weeknights and in shoulder months like late April, May, and October. Avoid the last week of July (Pony Swim week) and Memorial Day weekend, when nightly rates rise across the Eastern Shore. Use the RVezy price filter to set your budget, and look for hosts offering multi-night discounts of 10 to 20 percent for stays of three nights or longer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chincoteague%2C%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Chincoteague?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Chincoteague, VA. Virginia allows non-commercial drivers to operate motorhomes under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) with a standard Class D license, which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), usually under $20 from your local auto association. That's it. No CDL, no special endorsement, no road test required for your Chincoteague RV trip.
dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/applying/eligibilityIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Every RVezy booking in Chincoteague includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 175 with peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), picking the package that fits your comfort zone, and it covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip. While this is not traditional auto insurance, it provides real financial protection if something unexpected happens, from a cracked windshield on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to a flat tire on Maddox Boulevard. First-time renters appreciate knowing help is one phone call away, day or night, anywhere on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Chincoteague RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, the refund amount depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. This matters on the Eastern Shore during Atlantic hurricane season (June through November). You will see the full policy clearly during checkout. If a tropical storm is forecast for Chincoteague, contact RVezy support early, the team has helped thousands of travelers navigate weather-related changes and can walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Chincoteague RV trip?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Chincoteague options are plentiful on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Many local hosts welcome dogs for a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, your pup can join you at Chincoteague KOA, Tom's Cove Park, and Maddox Family Campground, which allow leashed pets. Note that pets are restricted in much of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and on the Assateague beach to protect wildlife and the famous wild ponies, but the Town of Chincoteague's Veterans Memorial Park and Robert Reed Downtown Park are great leashed walks. Pack a tick check routine, the marsh grass is beautiful but buggy.
fws.gov/refuge/chincoteague/visit-us/rules-and-policiesCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Chincoteague?
Yes, RV delivery Chincoteague is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you are new to RVing. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your site at Tom's Cove Park, Maddox Family Campground, Chincoteague KOA, or Inlet View Campground, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. You skip the stress of driving across the Route 175 causeway and unloading, and just show up ready to relax. Delivery fees vary by distance, typically $2 to $5 per mile round-trip. Use the Delivery filter to find hosts offering this service.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chincoteague%2C%20VirginiaHow far can I drive on my Chincoteague RV rental?
Plenty far for an unforgettable trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, look for that filter on RVezy. From Chincoteague, popular round-trip drives easily fit within typical allowances: Ocean City, MD is about 45 miles (one hour), Virginia Beach is roughly 120 miles, Williamsburg sits around 145 miles away, and Washington, DC is approximately 170 miles. If you are planning a bigger loop like a Delmarva Peninsula tour or RV road trip from Chincoteague down to the Outer Banks (about 230 miles), message the host before booking to negotiate extra miles upfront, which is almost always cheaper than per-mile overage fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039038674-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Chincoteague for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping Chincoteague. Top picks include Tom's Cove Park with bayfront pull-throughs minutes from the Assateague beach entrance; Maddox Family Campground right off Maddox Boulevard near the wildlife refuge; Inlet View Campground with bay views; Chincoteague KOA Holiday with full hookups and family activities; and Tall Pines Harbor Campground in Sanford, about 25 minutes away on the Chesapeake Bay side. Book by February for July and Pony Swim week (late July), when every site on the island fills months in advance.
chincoteaguechamber.com/business-type/campgrounds-and-rv-parks/When is the best time to visit Chincoteague in an RV?
Late May through early June and mid-September through mid-October are the sweet spots for a Chincoteague RV trip. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s, mosquitoes are far less aggressive than peak summer, and the crowds thin out while shops and restaurants stay open. July and August bring highs near 89F with high humidity, perfect beach weather but bug-heavy in the marshes. Want something different? November brings the snow goose migration to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, a world-class wildlife spectacle. Pro tip: the last Wednesday and Thursday of July is the famous Chincoteague Pony Swim, magical but extremely busy, so book your rental six-plus months ahead.
weather.gov/akq/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Chincoteague?
Yes, Chincoteague is one of the easiest places in Virginia for a first time renting an RV. The island is flat, traffic moves slowly, and most rentals are right-sized Class C motorhomes or travel trailers under 30 feet. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, hookups, and dump procedures, and you can text or call them during your trip with questions. Even better, request delivery and you will not drive the RV at all, the host parks it at your campsite. Practice backing up in an empty lot off Chicken City Road before heading to your site, and avoid the narrow stretch of Main Street downtown if you are in a larger rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if my RV breaks down during my Chincoteague trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Route 175 causeway or a dead battery at Tom's Cove will not ruin your trip. One call gets a service truck dispatched, and you can also message your host directly, most Chincoteague-area hosts live nearby and respond quickly. The RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip if you need help coordinating. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before crossing the causeway, and note that AT&T and Verizon both have reliable service on Chincoteague Island, though coverage thins out on the Assateague beach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips I can take from Chincoteague?
An RV road trip from Chincoteague unlocks some of the East Coast's most scenic drives. Head north 45 minutes to Ocean City, MD and Assateague State Park for boardwalk fun and more wild horses. Drive south about 2 hours down US-13 across the 17-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Loop west 3.5 hours to historic Williamsburg and Jamestown for colonial history. Or string together a full Delmarva tour with stops in Cape Charles, Lewes, and Rehoboth Beach. Pro tip: travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals, and cross-border trips to Canada depend on the host and insurance, so message before booking if you're planning one.
virginia.org/things-to-do/road-trips/How much should I budget for fuel on a Chincoteague RV trip?
Realistic budgeting helps you enjoy the trip without surprises. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs sit around 6 to 10 MPG. Virginia gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average, and there are convenient stations on Chincoteague (Royal Farms and Shore Stop on Maddox Boulevard) plus cheaper fill-ups on US-13 in T's Corner before you cross the causeway. For a 4-night trip with 200 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $130 for fuel. Pro tip: top off on the mainland before returning the rig, on-island prices run slightly higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in Chincoteague?
For peak season (June through August and Pony Swim week in late July), book campgrounds 4 to 6 months ahead, sites at Tom's Cove Park, Maddox Family Campground, and Chincoteague KOA fill fast. Assateague Island National Seashore campground (on the Maryland side, since there is no camping in the Virginia section) opens reservations on Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance, and summer weekends often sell out the day they release. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much more forgiving, two to four weeks ahead usually works. If your dates are flexible, Sunday through Thursday arrivals are easier to score and often $20 to $40 cheaper per night.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232489What are driving conditions like on and around Chincoteague Island?
Driving to Chincoteague is mostly smooth sailing. You'll approach via Route 175 east from US-13, a flat, two-lane causeway with a long bridge over the marsh, easy to drive even in a 30-foot Class C. On the island itself, Main Street and Maddox Boulevard get congested in summer afternoons, especially when day-trippers return from the beach around 4 to 6 PM. The narrow streets near downtown can be tight for larger rigs, so stick to Maddox and Chicken City Road when possible. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and be aware that summer thunderstorms can bring quick downpours. Pro tip: check Virginia 511 for real-time Bay Bridge-Tunnel conditions if you're approaching from the south.
511virginia.org/What amenities can I expect at Chincoteague-area campgrounds?
Most full-service campgrounds near Chincoteague offer 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, plus pools and laundry at the resort-style parks. Tom's Cove Park has on-site dump stations, fish-cleaning areas, and direct bay access. Chincoteague KOA adds a pool, dog park, and family activities. Need to fill fresh water or dump tanks? Every full-hookup park on the island handles both on-site. Propane is available at local stations and at KOA, about 5 minutes from downtown. Cell service is solid on the island but spotty on the Assateague beach, so download offline maps before heading out to look for wild ponies.
chincoteaguechamber.com/business-type/campgrounds-and-rv-parks/What's included inside a typical Chincoteague RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped modern rentals are. A typical motorhome rental Chincoteague includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, bathroom with toilet and shower, roof AC and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most rigs also have a TV, propane generator (great for boondocking), and outdoor awning. Many hosts include linens, towels, kitchen basics, and outdoor chairs in the base price, while extras like a Wi-Fi hotspot, bikes (perfect for the 3.2-mile Wildlife Loop), and beach gear are often available as add-ons. Pro tip: message your host to confirm what's included, owners often throw in coolers, fishing rods, or crabbing gear at no charge.
fws.gov/refuge/chincoteagueWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Chincoteague?
Popular add-ons in Chincoteague include delivery and setup ($2 to $5 per mile), generator usage packages, propane refills, dump and cleaning services ($50 to $150), and bundles with bikes, kayaks, or beach chairs. Pickup is typically at the host's home base on the Eastern Shore between Onley, Onancock, and Chincoteague proper, with most hosts offering a flexible 1 to 3 PM check-in and 11 AM checkout. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Bundle delivery plus a dump-and-clean package and you essentially hand the keys back and walk away, ideal for first-timers on their campervan rental Chincoteague experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chincoteague%2C%20VirginiaHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and transparent: you pay the full rental amount through RVezy when you book (no cash to the host), and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, drove within your mileage allowance, and emptied tanks if required, the hold is released within a few days of trip end. Do a quick walkaround video with the host at pickup and dropoff, time-stamped on your phone. It is the single best way to keep your deposit smooth and stress-free for your RV rental Virginia adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksLocal insider tip: what's the one thing I shouldn't miss in Chincoteague?
Bike the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge's 3.2-mile Wildlife Loop in the morning, before vehicles are allowed on the road (cars get access only after 3 PM). You will have the marsh almost to yourself, watch wild ponies graze in the mist, and spot herons, egrets, and bald eagles. Rent bikes on Maddox Boulevard, or bring your own with your RV. Pair it with breakfast at the Island Creamery (yes, ice cream for breakfast is the local move) and you have nailed the perfect Chincoteague morning. Bonus tip: time your trip with a NASA Wallops Flight Facility rocket launch (just 7 miles away) for a one-of-a-kind family RV trip Chincoteague memory.
