Campgrounds near Horntown, Virginia
Horntown sits on Virginia's Eastern Shore in Accomack County, minutes from the causeway to Chincoteague Island and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of Assateague Island's beach, the Assateague Lighthouse, and the wild Chincoteague ponies, while keeping campers off the more crowded island itself. Wallops Flight Facility, visible across the water, occasionally launches rockets that can be watched from bayfront sites.
The closest option is Trails End Campground Resort, a private waterfront community where lot owners can add cottages and permanent camping structures. Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay and Jellystone Park Chincoteague Island offer resort-style amenities aimed at families, while Tom's Cove Park sits directly on Chincoteague Island along Assateague Channel with waterfront sites, a marina, and a fishing pier.
For a quieter, forested alternative, Shad Landing - Pocomoke River State Park lies across the Maryland line along the Pocomoke River, roughly 45 minutes from Assateague's beaches, offering a state-park setting with a marina, pool, and river access.
Things to do near Horntown
The main draw is the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, a preserve on the Virginia end of Assateague Island composed of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest. Visitors come to see the wild ponies, walk the beach, bike the Wildlife Loop, and climb the Assateague Lighthouse. Pets are not permitted on the refuge, so travelers with dogs need to plan day options or a pet-sitter.
Fishing, crabbing, and clamming are popular in designated areas, and a Virginia saltwater fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Bait, tackle, and boat rentals are available on Chincoteague Island. Boat tours out of Chincoteague run into the back bays to view ponies, shorebirds, and dolphins. Family add-ons include the Chincoteague Pony Centre, the Museum of Chincoteague Island, and the NASA Wallops Visitor Center.

The camping season on the Eastern Shore runs roughly spring through fall. Tom's Cove Park operates seasonally from March 1 through November 30 and is closed during the winter months. Shad Landing at Pocomoke River State Park runs its full campground in the warm season, with a limited number of sites available year-round, and its swimming pool operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Summer is peak season and books heavily around the Chincoteague Pony Swim. The Pony Swim is held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, an annual tradition hosted by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and made famous by Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague. Tens of thousands of spectators gather on the island to watch, and lodging and campsites within reasonable driving distance fill months out for that week, with minimum-stay rules in effect.
Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway, and thinner crowds. Winter is quiet: many private campgrounds shut down, the beach is exposed and windy, and services on Chincoteague run on reduced hours.
How to book near Horntown
Reservation systems vary by property. Shad Landing at Pocomoke River State Park is booked through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources reservation portal at parkreservations.maryland.gov, which handles tent sites, RV sites with electric hookups in the Acorn Trail, Deer Run, and Robin's Nest loops, and cabins. Book well ahead for summer weekends and holidays.
For Tom's Cove Park, nightly reservations are booked online, while seasonal and extended stays are arranged directly with the park. Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay and Jellystone Park Chincoteague Island take bookings through their own operator websites. Trails End is largely a private lot-owner community, so short-term availability is limited and typically arranged through individual owners on vacation-rental platforms.
Book Pony Swim week as early as possible, aim for six to eight weeks out for other summer weekends, and confirm hookup type, RV length limits, and pet rules at the time of booking.
What to expect near Horntown
Horntown itself is rural, with limited services; groceries, fuel, and restaurants are concentrated on Chincoteague Island and along US-13. Expect flat terrain, salt marsh, mosquitoes and biting flies in warm months, and coastal humidity. Bring bug spray, sun protection, and a bike for refuge trails.
Campground styles differ. Tom's Cove is a large, well-established waterfront campground with a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and tent sites, along with a pool, marina, boat ramp, and country store. Shad Landing offers a more wooded state-park experience with electric hookups in select loops and a central dump station, while private resorts near Horntown lean toward family amenities like pools, playgrounds, and camp stores. Pets are not permitted on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, so plan accordingly if traveling with dogs.

Booking is low risk because RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy that applies across listings, not the individual host. You receive a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking (as long as your trip is more than 7 days away), with tiered partial refunds based on how far out you cancel from the trip start date. Message the host before booking to confirm size limits, and pack a long lead so your pup can enjoy the salt-marsh breeze in camp.

weather.gov/akq/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?

Most hosts share a printed cheat sheet and a phone number you can text any time during the trip. RVezy's 24/7 support is available too. Your host is also a direct message away through RVezy for quick questions about quirks of their specific rig. Save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway.

For a 300-mile loop in a Class C, plan roughly $130 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Virginia before crossing into Maryland, where the gas tax is higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Horntown?
Reserve early and your trip basically plans itself. For Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge access during Pony Penning week (late July), book your campground six to nine months out, especially Tom's Cove Park and Maddox Family Campground. For Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends, aim for at least three months ahead at Tall Pines KOA and Chincoteague Bay Trails End. Shoulder-season weekday trips can often be booked just two to three weeks out.
reservevaparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Horntown, VA?
Driving an RV around Horntown is genuinely easy compared to most US destinations. The Eastern Shore is famously flat, US-13 is a straight four-lane divided highway, and Route 175 out to Chincoteague is wide with great shoulders. Watch for two things: the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel restricts vehicles in high winds (sustained winds over 47 mph can close it to RVs and trailers), and afternoon summer thunderstorms can roll in fast off the Atlantic. Be alert for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads like Route 679. There are no mountain passes, no toll roads on the Shore, and parking lots in Chincoteague easily fit larger rigs.
cbbt.com/restrictions/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Horntown?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Horntown, VA offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), bath houses with hot showers, laundry, and dump stations for travelers without sewer at their site. Chincoteague Bay Trails End has a pool, marina, restaurant, and general store on-site. Tall Pines KOA adds a pool, mini-golf, and cabin rentals. Potable water fills are available at every full-service park, and the National Park Service campground on Assateague Island in Maryland has a dump station open seasonally. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading onto Chincoteague Island, where in-town water-fill options are limited.
