Campgrounds and RV parks near Lexington, VA

Natural Bridge State Park protects a 215-foot limestone arch carved by Cedar Creek, and the 1,500-acre park includes forests, meadows, karst terrain, and mountain vistas. The Cedar Creek Trail leads from the visitor center under the bridge to Lace Falls, a 30-foot cascade. Families often pair a park visit with the Natural Bridge Caverns or the drive-through Virginia Safari Park. Hikers head to House Mountain, a Rockbridge County landmark with two peaks and a reserve a short drive from downtown Lexington. The Blue Ridge Parkway is roughly 30 minutes east, with trailheads at Otter Creek, the James River, and beyond. In town, visitors tour VMI, walk the historic downtown, and paddle or fish the Maury and James rivers.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October, with the heaviest demand on summer weekends and during fall foliage in October. Private parks near Natural Bridge stay busiest then, and reservations tighten several weeks out. National Park Service campgrounds follow a shorter window: Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds, including Otter Creek, operate on a seasonal schedule, typically opening in late May and closing in late October, though the official opening and closing dates change each year. Spring brings mild days and higher stream flows, good for waterfalls and wildflowers but with variable rain. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common in the valley. Winter is the quiet season. Water is shut off at many private RV sites during the coldest months, and Parkway campgrounds are closed. Some private parks near Natural Bridge remain open year-round with limited services, so confirm hookups before booking a cold-weather trip.

The Natural Bridge KOA and both Jellystone parks are family-oriented, with pools, planned activities, and full hookups on most sites. The KOA sits in a quiet, wooded, rural setting in the foothills with a swimming pool, game room, and camp store. Sites are close together, and summer weekends can feel busy with kids and golf carts. Otter Creek is the opposite experience. Sites are basic, with no utility hook-ups, emphasizing a more primitive camping experience, and the campground sits at the Blue Ridge Parkway's lowest elevation, only 649 feet above sea level. Maximum vehicle lengths for each campsite are given on the reservation website, Recreation.gov. Campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway are not set up for long term camping. Cell service is spotty along the Parkway. Bring drinking water, and buy firewood locally to avoid moving pests.
