Camping near Mathews, Virginia

Mathews sits on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, a rural county on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay between the Piankatank River and Mobjack Bay. The town serves as a base for waterfront camping, boating, and fishing trips, with most nearby campgrounds located on the bay, on tidal creeks, or on Gwynn's Island just offshore. RV renters have several private-park options within a short drive. Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island occupies the tip of Gwynn's Island with waterfront and wooded sites, while Sun Retreats New Point sits near the historic New Point Comfort Lighthouse at the county's southern end. Cross Rip Campground offers a smaller, quieter setting close to the water. Across the Piankatank River in Middlesex County, Grey's Point Camp in Topping sits on the Rappahannock River, and Bush Park Camping Resort provides additional full-hookup RV options within a reasonable drive of Mathews. The area is roughly a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Washington, D.C., and about an hour from Williamsburg and the historic triangle.

Things to do around Mathews

The water drives most trip planning here. Renters use campgrounds as a launching point for kayaking, crabbing, saltwater fishing, and boating on the Chesapeake Bay, Milford Haven, and the Piankatank and Rappahannock rivers. Sandy swimming beaches and boat ramps are common features at Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island and Grey's Point Camp. On land, the New Point Comfort Lighthouse preserve sits at the tip of a former peninsula and is visible from a viewing platform. The Gwynn's Island Museum covers local maritime history, and Beaverdam Park in neighboring Gloucester County offers freshwater fishing, kayak rentals, and wooded hiking trails. Families traveling with kids often day-trip to Busch Gardens, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, all within roughly an hour by RV or tow vehicle.

The main camping season on the Middle Peninsula runs from spring through mid-fall. April and May bring mild days, blooming dogwoods, and lighter crowds, though water temperatures stay cool for swimming. Bookings pick up sharply around Memorial Day weekend. Summer is peak season. Waterfront sites at Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island, Sun Retreats New Point, and Grey's Point Camp routinely fill weeks in advance for July and August weekends. Expect warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and the highest bug activity, especially near marshes at dawn and dusk. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the statistical peak on September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Coastal storms occasionally trigger evacuation orders on the Peninsula. September and October are often the best value: water is still warm enough for paddling, humidity drops, and Tidewater fall color typically peaks in late October. Most private parks in the area scale back to weekends-only or close by early winter.

How to book a site

There is no federal or Virginia state park campground inside Mathews County itself, so the standard state and federal reservation portals do not apply here. Instead, book directly through each private campground's website or reservation line. Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island and Sun Retreats New Point are reserved through the Sun Outdoors booking system, and Bush Park Camping Resort, Cross Rip Campground, and Grey's Point Camp take reservations on their own sites. For summer holiday weekends, secure waterfront and full-hookup pull-through sites two to three months out. Shoulder-season stays in April, May, and October are usually bookable closer to arrival, though weekends still move quickly. Confirm each park's RV length limits, big-rig access, and pet rules before booking, since older waterfront parks in the region have tight interior roads.

What to expect on the ground

Mathews is small and rural. The county seat has a compact walkable center with a few restaurants, a hardware store, and grocery pickup, but the nearest full-size supermarkets and RV supply stores are in Gloucester, about a half-hour drive. Stock up on the way in. Site surfaces vary by park. Waterfront sites often have grass or sand pads and less shade, while interior loops are typically wooded. Cellular signal is generally usable but can be weak in low spots on Gwynn's Island and near the marshes at Sun Retreats New Point. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and no-see-ums, are common from late spring through early fall near the tidal marshes. Bring repellent, screen the awning at dusk, and plan on a fresh-water rinse for gear after saltwater use.
