Campgrounds and RV parks near Onancock, VA

The headline attraction is Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, home to the famous Chincoteague ponies, miles of walking and biking trails, and access to a public beach on the Virginia side of Assateague Island. Birding is a major draw, with hundreds of species recorded on the refuge across the year. At Janes Island State Park near Crisfield, more than 30 miles of marked water trails dissect a 2,900-acre Chesapeake Bay salt marsh, with most waterways protected from wind and current, providing conditions suitable for novice and experienced paddlers alike. Anglers target striped bass, spot, croaker, flounder, and bluefish, and crabbing is a family favorite. In Onancock itself, the harbor is the departure point for the passenger ferry to Tangier Island. Downtown has restaurants, a bakery, and a seasonal farmers market within walking distance.

The camping season on the Eastern Shore runs roughly late March through November, with a hard summer peak tied to the Chincoteague Pony Swim. The swim is held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, when the Saltwater Cowboys herd the wild ponies across the Assateague Channel at slack tide. Tens of thousands of spectators arrive for the event, and sites within an hour of Chincoteague sell out months in advance for that week. Spring and fall are the practical shoulder seasons: cooler temperatures, active bird migration, and open campgrounds without the July and August crowds. Janes Island State Park operates seasonally from late March into late November, and Virginia Landing runs a similar April-through-October window. Bugs are a real factor: campers should expect biting flies, mosquitoes, and ticks during the summer season, and pack insect repellent and possibly a screen tent for peak times. Winter camping options are limited. Most private resorts close or run reduced services, and some refuge facilities and visitor centers keep shorter hours.

Sites near Onancock skew toward flat, coastal terrain: gravel or grass pads, marsh views, and shade from loblolly pines. Virginia Landing offers full-hookup RV sites and level pads. Tall Pines Harbor is a larger waterfront property that caters to short-term stays as well as seasonal campers, with a mix of site types. At Janes Island State Park, the campground accommodates RVs up to 30 feet with electric hookups on some loops, and sites include picnic tables and fire rings, though space runs tight on the gravel pads. A dump station, camp store, and boat launch are on site. Expect mosquitoes, biting flies, and ticks in summer. Cell coverage is generally reliable in Onancock and Chincoteague but patchy in the marshes. Firewood restrictions apply at state parks: do not bring firewood in from outside the region.
