Campgrounds and RV parks near Rivanna, VA

Rivanna gives RV travelers easy access to three presidential sites: Monticello, James Monroe's Highland, and Michie Tavern. The University of Virginia campus, designed by Jefferson, is nearby, along with the pedestrian Downtown Mall in Charlottesville for restaurants, shops, and live music. Outdoor options span the Rivanna River Trail, the Saunders-Monticello Trail, and more than 500 miles of hiking in Shenandoah National Park, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway deliver overlook driving that suits families staying in an RV. On the water, the Rivanna and James Rivers support tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The surrounding countryside is dense with wineries, cideries, and breweries, many with tasting rooms and picnic areas that welcome day trippers.

The camping season typically runs April through October, with overnight lows near 40°F in the shoulder months and summer daytime highs around 85°F. Spring brings dogwood blooms and comfortable daytime temperatures, and it is a strong window for RV travel before school-break demand builds. Expect frequent rain showers through May. Summer is peak season. Days are hot and humid, thunderstorms are common in the afternoon, and popular campgrounds book up well in advance. Reserve early for holiday weekends and any stay tied to UVA move-in, graduation, or home football weekends, which tighten availability across the region. Fall is the busiest window for scenic travel. Reservations are strongly recommended for developed campgrounds, especially during fall foliage season when visitation peaks. Foliage generally peaks in mid to late October along Skyline Drive. Winter is the quietest season: Shenandoah National Park campgrounds typically open between late March and early May and close by late October or early November, though several private parks near Charlottesville stay open year round.

Terrain around Rivanna is rolling, with campgrounds set in wooded foothills between roughly 500 and 1,500 feet of elevation. Access roads to private parks are generally paved and manageable for larger RVs, but sites within Shenandoah National Park sit higher along Skyline Drive and involve steady mountain grades. Amenities at the nearby private campgrounds typically include full or partial hookups, bathhouses, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a pool or swimming pond. Cabin and cottage rentals are commonly available alongside RV sites. Shenandoah National Park campgrounds do not provide RV hookups but offer dump stations with potable water. Cell coverage is reliable close to Charlottesville and spotty in the mountains. Expect humid summer nights, occasional heavy thunderstorms, and black bear activity in the higher-elevation parks, so use provided food-storage lockers where posted. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall.
