Camping near Scottsville, Virginia
Scottsville sits on a horseshoe bend of the James River in central Virginia, roughly 20 miles south of Charlottesville and within reach of the Blue Ridge foothills. RV renters use the town as a base for river paddling, wine-country day trips, and access to central Virginia state parks. Interstate 64 and US 29 feed the area, so towing a rental rig from Richmond, Washington D.C., or the Shenandoah Valley is straightforward.
Camping options fall into three buckets: state-park sites along the James, private RV resorts with full hookups, and small riverfront campgrounds close to town. James River State Park operates several campgrounds, including the 30-site Red Oak Campground with water and electricity, primitive Canoe Landing, Branch Pond and Walnut Grove campgrounds, and the Horseshoe Equestrian Campground. Charlottesville KOA Holiday, Misty Mountain Camp Resort, Shenandoah Crossing Resort and Country Club, and Horseshoe Flats Campground round out the private-park options.
Most travelers here mix river time with short drives to Monticello, Charlottesville breweries, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Things to do around Scottsville
The James River is the main attraction. A full-service canoe livery at James River State Park provides canoe, kayak and tube rentals along with shuttle services, and local outfitters in Scottsville run similar trips from town. The park is a hot spot for smallmouth bass fishing, with catfish, panfish and the occasional river gar also caught, and a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required.
On land, the park has 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking and bridle use. Families staying at Shenandoah Crossing Resort and Country Club or Misty Mountain Camp Resort get resort-style amenities such as pools and planned activities, while stargazers should note that James River State Park was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2019. Charlottesville, Monticello, and Wintergreen are all inside an hour's drive.

Camping season in the Scottsville area runs strongest from spring through fall. Primitive campgrounds at James River State Park are open year-round, while Red Oak Campground and the Horseshoe Equestrian Campground, both with water and electric but no sewer, operate only from the first Friday in March to the first Monday in December. Private parks such as Charlottesville KOA Holiday and Misty Mountain Camp Resort typically run on a longer season, but hookup availability can vary in the coldest months.
Late spring and early fall bring the most comfortable RV weather, with warm days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Summer weekends are the busiest window: river outfitters run at capacity, and family-oriented resorts fill quickly.
Winter is quiet. Primitive sites remain available, but water spigots and bathhouses at seasonal loops are shut down, and river levels can spike after storms. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, cabins at James River State Park require a week's stay for reservations made three to eleven months out.
How to book near Scottsville
For state-park sites, reservations go through the Virginia State Parks system at reservevaparks.com. Camping reservations are highly recommended, and all campgrounds are site-specific. Bookings can be made online or by calling 800-933-PARK, up to 11 months in advance and up to 2 p.m. on the day of arrival. Popular summer weekends at Horseshoe and Red Oak often sell out months ahead, so booking early is essential.
Private parks including Charlottesville KOA Holiday, Misty Mountain Camp Resort, Shenandoah Crossing Resort and Country Club, and Horseshoe Flats Campground each take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. Holiday weekends, UVA football weekends, and graduation dates in Charlottesville drive tight availability, so check dates before committing to a rental rig.
What to expect around Scottsville
The terrain is rolling Piedmont: gentle hills, hardwood forest, meadows, and river bottomland. State-park roads are paved to the main campgrounds, but some primitive loops and equestrian pull-throughs are gravel, so oversize rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. Red Oak Campground has 30 sites with water and electricity, a full-service bathhouse with hot showers, and coin-operated laundry, while primitive loops have basic restrooms and no hookups. A dump station is available near the park entrance.
Expect limited cell coverage in river bottoms and inside the park, patchy signal along back roads, and no sewer hookups at state-park sites. Virginia State Parks asks that you not bring firewood from home; buy it at the park or nearby, and burn any wood brought in before leaving. Bugs, ticks, and afternoon thunderstorms are the main summer nuisances.
