RV camping near Short Pump, Virginia
Short Pump is a suburb in western Henrico County on the outskirts of Richmond, best known as a retail and dining hub anchored by Short Pump Town Center. For RV travelers, it works as a convenient base for exploring the Richmond metro, the James River, and the theme-park corridor to the north along I-95.
Campground options nearby range from full-hookup RV parks to family resorts and a state park on the James. Kosmo Village Campground in the Glen Allen area is a small, no-frills park with full-hookup sites along the I-95 corridor north of Richmond. Americamps RV Resort in Ashland offers a larger, amenity-rich stay with full-hookup pull-throughs, cottages, and a seasonal pool. Richmond North / Kings Dominion KOA Holiday sits next to Kings Dominion in Doswell and runs a free shuttle into the park.
For a more natural setting, River Bend at Powhatan State Park provides electric and water hookups within a large park on the James River west of Richmond, and The Wilderness at Belmead offers a rustic option in the same corridor.
Things to do near Short Pump
Families based in an RV near Short Pump have easy reach to Kings Dominion in Doswell, a theme park with more than 60 rides plus the Soak City waterpark included with admission. The Richmond North / Kings Dominion KOA Holiday runs a complimentary shuttle to the gate, which simplifies parking for RV guests and typically runs throughout the day when the park is open.
Closer to town, Short Pump Town Center offers open-air shopping and dining, and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the museums of downtown Richmond are a short drive east.
Outdoor plans center on the James River. Powhatan State Park has about 12 miles of multi-use trails through hardwood and pine forest and three car-top boat slides for paddling, and the James River Park System in the city offers additional trails, fishing, and river access.

Central Virginia has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, with summer bringing hot, muggy afternoons in the upper 80s to low 90s and frequent thunderstorms. August is typically the wettest month in Richmond, so plan for occasional afternoon downpours and pack for humidity.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping. March through May brings mild days and blooming dogwoods, though March and May are among the rainier months of the year. September and October cool off quickly, deliver strong fall color in the hardwood forests, and coincide with the Halloween Haunt season at Kings Dominion.
Winters are cold but not extreme, with daytime highs typically above freezing and occasional light snow, most often in January. Powhatan State Park's River Bend Campground closes for the winter, running from the first Friday in March to the first Monday in December, while Kosmo Village, Americamps, and the Richmond North KOA operate year-round.
How to book campgrounds near Short Pump
Private parks in the area take direct reservations. Americamps RV Resort books through its own site and phone line, and the Richmond North / Kings Dominion KOA Holiday reserves through KOA.com or by phone, with a seven-day cancellation notice required for RV and tent sites and a fourteen-day notice for deluxe cabins. Kosmo Village Campground handles bookings directly, so calling ahead is advised.
River Bend at Powhatan State Park is reserved through the Virginia State Parks system at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-7275, up to eleven months in advance. All sites are site-specific, and cancellations within fourteen days of the reserved date are non-refundable.
For summer weekends, holidays, and any dates overlapping Kings Dominion operating days, booking several weeks to months in advance is strongly recommended.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in the area vary widely. Kosmo Village is a compact, self-contained park with full hookups, so an RV with its own facilities is the best fit. Americamps RV Resort has full-hookup back-ins and pull-throughs, two bathhouses, two laundry buildings, a fenced dog park, and a seasonal pool that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The Richmond North / Kings Dominion KOA Holiday accommodates pull-throughs up to 70 feet, offers deluxe cabins, and has a pool open roughly mid-May through mid-September. Train noise from adjacent tracks and I-95 traffic noise can carry at both parks, so light sleepers may want interior sites.
River Bend at Powhatan State Park has 29 sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp electric plus water hookups, a bathhouse with hot showers, and accommodates RVs up to 60 feet. Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is 1 p.m.
