Campgrounds near Artondale, Washington
Artondale is an unincorporated community on the Gig Harbor Peninsula in Pierce County, west of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It sits along Hale Passage across from Fox Island, with quick access to Highway 16 and a corridor of state parks along the Key Peninsula and southern Puget Sound.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Gig Harbor RV Resort is the closest full-service private park, useful for hookups and a base for exploring the peninsula. Penrose Point State Park sits southwest on the Key Peninsula, a forested marine and camping park on the shores of Puget Sound with nearly 2 miles of saltwater frontage on Mayo Cove and Carr Inlet. Dash Point State Park lies across the Narrows near Federal Way on Puget Sound, a 398-acre camping park with 3,301 feet of saltwater shoreline.
For smaller rigs, tents, or group trips, Sound View Camp and Retreat Center on the Key Peninsula and Riverbend Campground round out the nearby choices. The area works well for families combining beach time, forested trails, and short bridge drives to Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula.
Things to do near Artondale
The shoreline drives the itinerary. Dash Point features 3,301 feet of saltwater shoreline on Puget Sound with unobstructed views and opportunities for sea-life study. The extensive sandy beach and ideal low-tide conditions attract skimboarders, and the shoreline offers protected swimming, beachcombing, and tide-pool exploration.
Penrose Point is a 237-acre marine and camping park with nearly 2 miles of saltwater frontage on Mayo Cove and Carr Inlet, with paddling from the dock, clamming, and crabbing on protected water. Dash Point adds 11 miles of hiking and biking trails through second-growth forest, plus kite flying, birdwatching, and sailboarding. Downtown Gig Harbor, a short drive from Artondale, has a walkable waterfront, restaurants, and a maritime museum for a low-key afternoon off the trail.

Summer is the busy window on the Gig Harbor Peninsula. State park sites fill fastest between late June and Labor Day, and shoulder weekends in May and September remain popular. At Penrose Point, individual campsite reservations are available May 15 through September 15 and can be made up to nine months in advance, with camping first-come, first-served September 14 through May 14.
Showers at Penrose Point are open and available May 15 to October 1. Dash Point stays open for camping through the Washington State Parks reservation system, though facility hours and gate closures shift outside peak season. Cabins and utility sites go quickly for summer weekends and holidays.
Fall through early spring is the wet season across the peninsula. December has the highest number of rainy days, while July has the least. Expect frequent rain, short days, and muddy trails from November through February. Some private campgrounds and seasonal amenities scale back or close in the off-season, so confirm hookups, showers, and dump-station availability before booking a winter trip.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

Danielle is a great host! The trailer was wonderfully laid out and perfect for a family of four. It was very clean and everything worked perfectly! Our family had a great time and would definitely rent from Danielle again!

How to book
Washington State Parks sites, including Penrose Point and Dash Point, are booked through the state reservation portal at washington.goingtocamp.com or by phone. Reservations can be booked up to 9 months in advance. Summer waterfront and utility sites are the first to sell out, so for popular holiday weekends set a reminder for the day the nine-month window opens.
Private parks such as Gig Harbor RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, which is usually the fastest route for full-hookup sites suited to larger rigs. Group sites at Penrose Point and Dash Point are handled separately from individual bookings and may require calling the park.
A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to Washington state parks for day use. Overnight campers typically have day-use access included with the reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the state parks are wooded and shaded. Penrose Point has 82 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs up to 35 feet, on the shores of Puget Sound with 2 miles of saltwater frontage; none of the sites are on the water, but the beach is a short walk away. There are no sites with electric hookups, but generators can be used intermittently between 8am to 9pm.
Dash Point offers cabins along with standard and utility sites, and accommodates RVs and combinations of 32 feet or less in length. Park roads in the campground are narrow and winding, so measure your rig before booking a specific loop.
Expect cool, damp evenings even in summer, marine haze in the mornings, and cold Puget Sound water year-round. Bring layers, rain gear, and a tide table for beach activities.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Artondale, WA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Artondale, WA?
RV rental in Artondale is approachable for the Puget Sound area, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $295 per night through RVezy. Campervans typically land between $135 and $225 nightly, depending on age and amenities. You can stretch your budget further by booking midweek, traveling in the shoulder months of April, May, or late September, and filtering for hosts who offer weekly discounts. For a cheap RV rental in Artondale, look for owners with included generator hours and lower cleaning fees. Pro tip: booking 2 to 3 months ahead of a Gig Harbor summer weekend almost always beats last-minute pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Artondale,WashingtonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Artondale?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Artondale. The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) confirms that personal RV use is exempt from Commercial Driver License (CDL) rules, and virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well below the 26,001-pound CDL threshold. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That's it, no endorsements, no road tests, no surprises before your Gig Harbor adventure.
dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/commercial-driver-licenses-cdl/do-i-need-cdlWhat kind of protection comes with my Artondale RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Artondale includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 16 toward Gig Harbor with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during the booking process (it is not set by the host). It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap on a forest road near Penrose Point does not turn into a big headache. Pro tip: pick a higher-tier plan if you are a first-time renter or planning to tow toys, the extra confidence is worth it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Artondale RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy across the platform (hosts do not set their own), and refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your start date. If a host cancels, guests are refunded or offered credits, and RVezy support helps with unusual situations. You do not have to dig through individual listings to compare cancellation terms because the policy is consistent across RVezy. Pro tip: lock in your Gig Harbor summer dates early, then confirm your campground reservations through the Washington State Parks system so everything lines up.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Artondale is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers from local hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you arrive, your pup will love Sehmel Homestead Park's off-leash area in nearby Gig Harbor, the trails at Kopachuck State Park, and the saltwater beach at Purdy Spit just up Highway 302. Washington State Parks allow leashed pets on most trails and in campgrounds. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed, it speeds up approval and they often share their favorite local dog spots.
parks.wa.gov/know-before-you-go/park-rules/pets-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental in Artondale?
Yes, RV delivery in Artondale is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are new to RVing. Many RVezy hosts will deliver to nearby campgrounds like Kopachuck State Park or Penrose Point State Park, and some will even drop the rig at a private driveway or waterfront vacation home on Fox Island. Delivery usually includes full setup (leveling, hookups, slide-outs) plus a walkthrough of every system. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your address to confirm distance fees. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for first-time renters, you skip the stress of driving and start your Gig Harbor RV trip relaxed.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks-and-trails/parks/kopachuck-state-parkHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Artondale?
Most Artondale hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and you will find listings with unlimited mileage if you plan a longer loop. From Artondale, Seattle is about 50 miles north, Mount Rainier National Park is roughly 90 miles east, Olympic National Park's Hoh Rainforest is about 150 miles via the Hood Canal Bridge, and Leavenworth is around 175 miles northeast. Each listing shows its mileage policy and overage rate before you book. Pro tip: if you are planning the full Olympic Peninsula loop, filter for an RV rental with unlimited mileage to keep your road trip from Artondale stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Artondale,WashingtonWhere are the best campgrounds near Artondale to park an RV?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Artondale include Kopachuck State Park (just a few miles west, with forested day-use and beach access on Carr Inlet), Penrose Point State Park in Lakebay (about 20 miles south, with saltwater shoreline and standard sites), Joemma Beach State Park on the Key Peninsula, and Manchester State Park across the Kitsap Peninsula. Washington State Parks reservations open up to nine months in advance through the Washington State Parks reservation system. Pro tip: for summer weekends, set a calendar reminder for the nine-month booking window, waterfront sites at Penrose Point disappear quickly.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks-and-trails/reservation-informationWhen is the best time to visit Artondale in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Artondale is mid-June through mid-September, when the Gig Harbor area's wet climate gives way to a dry, mild summer with highs around 75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit and very little rain (July averages around an inch or less). May and late September are excellent shoulder-season picks with cool 60s, smaller crowds, and lower nightly rates. Winters are mild (highs in the mid-40s) but wet, with November typically among the rainiest months. Pro tip: aim for late July through early August for the warmest, most reliably sunny weather, ideal for booking a motorhome rental in Artondale.
weather.gov/sew/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I actually feel comfortable doing this?
Yes, and Artondale is genuinely one of the friendlier places to do a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the water system, propane, generator, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, so you're never left guessing. You can also message your host any time before or during the trip. The roads around Gig Harbor are well-maintained and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is straightforward for any sized RV. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip (easier to drive than a Class A), and consider a host who offers delivery to Kopachuck State Park, you'll skip the driving entirely and just enjoy the campfire.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/highway-bridges/tacoma-narrows-bridgeWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 16, a dead battery at Penrose Point, or need a tow back toward Artondale, help is one phone call away. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything comes up with the host or the rig. Your host is typically your first call for quick how-to questions (like resetting the water pump), and most respond within minutes. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone at pickup, takes 30 seconds and saves a lot of stress later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an RV rental from Artondale across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to interstate travel: you are free to drive your Artondale RV rental into Oregon, Idaho, and beyond, with popular RV road trip from Artondale routes including the Oregon Coast (Cannon Beach is roughly 4 to 5 hours south) and Glacier National Park (around 10 hours east). Cross-border travel into Canada (Vancouver, Whistler, or Banff) depends on the host's approval and insurance coverage, message them through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if Vancouver Island is on your radar, get host approval first and bring your passport.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Washington RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it is manageable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 mpg. Washington gas prices typically run above the national average, so a 300-mile loop in a Class C can cost roughly $100 to $130 in fuel depending on current rates. There is a Costco in Gig Harbor on Borgen Boulevard with some of the lowest fuel prices around. Pro tip: travel trailers towed by a host-included truck often deliver the best miles per gallon, ask about towed-vs-driveable options when you message hosts in Artondale.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Artondale?
For summer weekends (late June through Labor Day), book your campground reservation the moment the nine-month window opens through the Washington State Parks reservation system, especially for Kopachuck, Penrose Point, and Joemma Beach. Private RV resorts in the Gig Harbor area often allow booking many months out and fill 2 to 3 months ahead for prime summer dates. For shoulder season (May, late September, October), you can often book 2 to 4 weeks out and still snag waterfront sites. Pro tip: if state parks are full, check Hipcamp for private farm and waterfront sites around the Key Peninsula, they are often available even when public campgrounds are booked solid.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks-and-trails/reservation-informationWhat are local driving conditions like around Artondale and Gig Harbor?
Driving an RV around Artondale is refreshingly mellow compared to most metro areas. Highway 16 is a wide, well-maintained corridor connecting you to Tacoma via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which any standard RV can cross, no special permits, just be aware of the eastbound toll). Local Gig Harbor streets near downtown can be narrow, so use the public parking lots off Pioneer Way rather than driving the waterfront in a big rig. Watch for occasional dense morning fog from Puget Sound and slick leaves in fall. Pro tip: avoid southbound Highway 16 between 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays, locals know the bridge backs up, and your Artondale RV trip will be much smoother in the late morning.
wsdot.wa.gov/travel/highway-bridges/tacoma-narrows-bridgeWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Artondale?
Campgrounds near Artondale range from private RV resorts to rustic state parks, and most have the essentials you need. Private RV resorts in the Gig Harbor area typically offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Washington State Parks like Kopachuck and Penrose Point provide potable water fill stations, vault or flush toilets, hot showers, and dump stations, but most sites are water-and-electric only (not full sewer). Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Artondale, then plan one dump-and-fill stop mid-trip to keep your tanks happy on longer Olympic Peninsula loops.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks-and-trails/parks/penrose-point-state-parkWhat's actually inside an RV rental from Artondale?
More than you would expect. Most Artondale RV rentals come fully equipped with a real bed (or two), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelts for every passenger listed. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers typically sleep 4 to 8 people, campervans sleep 2 to 4, and many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, outdoor camp chairs, and a generator for off-grid power. Cell signal is generally strong throughout the Gig Harbor area. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and amenities on RVezy, and message the host to confirm what is already inside, many include linens, kitchen starter kits, and even kayaks for a great family RV trip in Artondale.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Artondale,WashingtonWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and dropoff work?
Most Artondale hosts offer add-ons that make life easier: linen and towel packages, camp kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards, portable BBQs, and outdoor furniture. Pickup is typically at the host's home address in or near Artondale, usually in the early afternoon, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Dropoff is generally by late morning with tanks and fuel handled per the host's instructions. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing, with options for both capped and unlimited mileage. Pro tip: if you are heading to Penrose Point or Joemma Beach, ask about the kayak add-on, paddling out from a saltwater campsite at sunset is the Puget Sound experience.
parks.wa.gov/find-parks-and-trails/parks/joemma-beach-state-parkHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit card at booking (never directly to the host), and the charge typically splits into an initial payment with the balance due closer to your trip. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment, and the amount is shown clearly on each listing. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the tanks and fuel handled per the host's instructions, the deposit is released back to your card after the trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at both pickup and dropoff, it is the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes on your RV camping Artondale trip.
